right now, smoking setting to the bay area as wildfires rage across the state. an alarming new coronavirus number. infection rates 10 times worse than one month ago. and with the variance circulating, some are reevaluating their weekend plans. good morning, it is saturday, august 7. let's take a live look. air-quality will be an issue with multiple wildfires sending smoker way. the skies were hazy yesterday. during, what will today look like? >> better than yesterday. there is good news in terms of air quality improving. you can see the good air- quality for the majority of the bay area. we are concerned about the

inland valleys. that is where the air quality was worse yesterday. i will show you the forecast for how the smoke well behaved over the next two days. more on that coming up. right now, air-quality is good across the bay in the bay area. santa rosa, 51. for the forecast, inland will be similar to yesterday. temperatures will not change a whole lot. i will have the whole forecast coming up in a few minutes. yesterday the air was in the good to moderate range. it was hard to square that assessment because of how the sky looked. we get a look at the smoke drifting into the east bay yesterday. >> reporter: smoke invaded diablo valley. the further inland, the more you notice the hazy sky.

alarmed. the smoke is not impacting the air that we breathe. >> i understand the folks are seeing this but a lot of that smoke is aloft. >> reporter: wildfire smoke is drifting up towards lake tahoe. here are photos from yesterday. experts say limit outdoor activities if you can smell the smoke and especially if you have a pre-existing condition. eight people are missing or unaccounted for in the dixie fire. it is the third-largest in state history behind the mendocino complex from 2018 and last year's august complex fire. biggest buyers have happe in just the past year. fipe cities off of the map.

district leaders say they are doing everything they can to ensure that students and staff are safe. we have more details on the precautions in place for the first day of school. >> reporter: teachers are getting ready for students to fill the classrooms on monday. this year, there are masks and gloves. >> you wear the mask to protect everyone. >> right now i feel prepared with what i have and ready to keep them as safe as possible. >> reporter: there is a number of precautions in place to prevent the spread of covid and schools included upgraded ventilation systems. >> we are doing everything that we can with the guidance of the state and the county to keep teaches her staff to be vaccinated. governor gavin newsom says he feels confident in the plans to reopen schools without a

temperatures topped 100 degrees on july 10th and philip cry check one out for a trail run. his body was found about a quarter-mile off course from his planned route. it appears that he simply sat down in the shade of a tree and never got back up again. the autopsy report found no evidence of trauma or an animal attack. one of seven western states entirely in drought. things are so bad and butte county that one of the plans at lake oroville has been shut down. water levels are at such a record low there is not enough water to generate power. some boaters are removing their boater craft. >> that is an indication and evidence of human caused climate change and we are seeing it now and our hydrology in california and elsewhere.

>> if the state cannot produce enough hydropower, we could see more flex alerts in the future. i will give you the specific view on how the smoke will be moving across northern california today. before i get to that, actual clouds is what it looks like right now from the camera we've got looking at the golden gate bridge. it is a healthy marine layer this morning. here is that unique vantage point looking at things from the top of the salesforce tower. the only thing visible is the top part of sutro. the clouds are hanging out pretty low. that is what it looks like in san jose. it will look hazy, but in terms of the actual smoke, there is two important things we will look at. this is the depiction of what the smoke concentration will dow e lower

elevations of the atmosphere, down to the ground where we are all breathing it in. for saturday morning at 6:00 a.m., there is a clear pattern. plenty of smoke for the central valley. it is downright unhealthy to very unhealthy as you get over toward the sierra and the foothills. when you look at the bay area as a whole, look at that weird shape right there. wind coming in at the lower levels to the golden gate and over the hills. the sea breeze in the onshore flow pushes it in. if we go through the rest of today, it gets better. a little bit more wind is squeezing into the delta and it will scour out a lot of the smoke down here. with this current scenario for this weekend, the air-quality will be okay. on sunday, it will happen again. it really gets better.

as we get into sunday through the afternoon, a much stronger onshore search will clear a lot of this out of. . it will continue to look easy. it could be moderate with a few unhealthy for sensitive groups. go easy on yourself. you can at least take some solace in knowing it is not all that bad here at this point. current temperatures out there are right around 60 degrees. by the time we get into the late morning, we will hang out at the golden gate. we saw how thick it was on the golden gate bridge. we could see some light mist and then one more big picture view as we watch the smoke it cleared out. daytime highs today will be in the upper 70s to low 80s for much of the south bay.

temperatures for the in the valleys of the east bay are in the mid-90s for most locations. we will go 91 in pleasant hill and 92 for livermore. temperatures will be right around the upper 60s to low to mid-70s and then mid-80s today for the valleys through moran and sonoma county. san francisco, oakland, not a whole lot of change here. temperatures will hold steady. when we look at the top line, those are the in the valleys of the east bay. you will pretty much be there for the rest of the seven-day forecast with no change. here are my valleys. 101, petaluma. it's not time of year and we will be watching smoke on a fairly regular basis now. >> we have largely been spared. those fires have generated tons

can see that. this will burn back by the time we get to the late morning today. right around 60 degrees out there right now. we will warm up into the mid- 90s. i will be back with what to expect for the rest of today in a few minutes. and now to the latest on the coronavirus. the cdc says daily cases have reached the highest total since february. the numbers top 106,000 yesterday. experts expect those numbers arise in the face of large events like the sturgis motorcycle rally the kicked off yesterday. last year, that became a superspreader event. >> we have every reason to believe that this year will be just as bad the economy added under 1 million jobs last week. the unemployment rate jumped from 1.9% to 1.4%.

the biden administration is kicking off an effort to get kids vaccinated. a low number of side effects in adolescents. out of nearly 9 million kids that got their shots by mid july, there were less than 10,000 instances of adverse side effects. it was dizziness and headaches. a small percentage of severe effects included inflammation of the heart muscle. major airlines will be launching a new employee vaccination mandate. a late october deadline for workers approved they are vaccinated. frontier employees not fully vaccinated by october 1st will have to get regular tests. the airline is offering bonus mile incentives for passengers. a new study showing us i tiffin link between reid

hillview airport and high levels in lead and children that live nearby. lynn ramirez is on the reaction from the community. >> reporter: 21 schools and childcare centers within 1.5 miles of reid hillview airport. airplanes have taken off and landed right by meyer elementary. a new study links the leaded fuel with high lead levels in the blood of neighboring children. >> the results of the led study are tragic. >> reporter: school leaders are joining neighbors and a porsche to shut the airport down. >> that is something that can be fixed by one vote of the board of supervisors when they shut this down. >> reporter: the study that analyzed blood samples from 1700 children show the children living within half a mile of reid hillview airport had

higher blood lead levels. the levels increased significantly with monthly quantities of aviation gasoline sold to fixed wing operators at the airport. they were comparable to children in the flint water crisis. >> something it, that neighbors have long suspected >> these airplanes are flying across our area dropping lead everywhere. >> the owner of tradewinds aviation does not know if his business has a future here. he says the airport is weeks away from switching to a new unleaded fuel, but will that be good enough to keep the airport open. >> we will find arguments to close it. i think the war will continue.

camera. >> reporter: a 13-year-old boy fires a gun into the air during the heartbreaking standoff inside pioneer cemetery in san bernardino. you can hear him yelling, kill me. >> it is a little kid. what is he doing with that? >> reporter: that is what natalie lopez was thinking >> when i saw him, i thought of my kids. what is he doing and where are his parents? >> he was standing beside his mother's grave. police say the boy called 911 falsely claiming he had killed three people saying if they don't kill me affirming to police, i will have to kill them. a bystander tells us this boy clearly seems suicidal. he even tried to calm him down but it was not working. police say they tried to talk the boy down.

he refused many commands to drop the weapon. he walks toward the cops. that is when officers say he pointed the gun at them and one of them shot him. >> they have to defend themselves too >> natalie said she saw the boy pointed gun at officers too. >> it was scary. you never know what they are going to do. there is a school across the street. there are a lot of kids playing outside. >> detectives said they found four guns with magazines and ammunition. and makes them think he was ready for a long confrontation. >> kcal 9news. >> the boy is being treated for his gunshot wound and is expected to survive x-ray make

sure the bay area students have the tools that they need as they return to school. the salvation army and walnut. >> we are collecting school supplies. there are a lot of needy people and needy children as they go back-to-school. we just want to help and encourage them to do their best at school. >> the salvation army has these bins outside of walmart stores in a few locations. families can head to the town center and antioch for a drive through grabbing go of school supplies that will and a 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. one of the main focuses will be smoke outside. i have some good news.

let's take a look from the camera that sits on top of salesforce frame. all you can see is sutro. that is a view from treasure island looking back towards the skyline. as we get down into the south bay, we have clouds here as well. most of the immediate bay is making up to gray skies. let's look ahead to the smoke forecast. at the top of this half-hour i showed you how we have air- quality sensors in the good category. green is showing up pretty much bay area wide. if we look ahead to today, the concern would be what the smoke will do later. if we look at the concentration of smoke, there's plenty in the central valley. the bay area is doing much better. this is the smoke down there to the ground. more of an onshore flow

continues to push the smok itis not the best story for the central valley and certainly not for the communities in the foothills of the sierra. watch what happens on sunday. we will take it from sunday morning and now you will see a strong onshore surge. the smoke is better today. it is a lot better tomorrow. we should only be looking at moderate to occasional unhealthy for sensitive groups for the inland valleys. this really is a concern for the valleys of contra costa county and alameda county. right now it is good and should get better to the day. if we take a look at where the marine layer is, clouds in the immediate bay. everybody gets sunshine with hayes even though the air- quality will be good down here

at the gr a lot of mid and upper layers smoke we will see. we are getting some light rain. it is classic for august. daytime highs are classic for early august. some upper 80s and low 90s for the south bay with 84 for san jose. palo alto, ed. it will be right around 90 for most of the communities for the inland valleys over the east bay. 91, pleasant hill. temperatures along the bay line will be low 70s. santa rosa, 85. 79 from much of those valleys through sonoma county. temperatures will warm-up into the mid-90s today in mendocino. we will pretty much told this line all the way through the remainder of the seven days. looking at our microclimates,

we will be back into the mid- 90s. we will keep it more like mid- 80s for the valleys up in the northbay through sonoma county and napa county. >> we did not get most of the smoke from those fires and what we got will be pushed out. >> thankfully. down here in the lower levels it is that time of year where we've got a strong onshore flow and that is really saving us. by september and october, it will likely be a different story. 99-year-old edith gained a title after doing a 150 pound that lift. she began lifting at her local gymnasium when she was 91. she says she has always like to stay active. >> i was getting ready to go back to lifting my body and

controlling my balance. i am expecting that in november i will have another trophy with a whole bunch of applause. i will take it from there. >> she looks great. she doesn't even look 100. she says she is looking forward to her birthday celebrations with family. he has been dubbed the mayor of san francisco's mission district. he is known for protesting evictions. and by the way, we learn another major reason why he is a hero in that community. >> reporter: they greet roberto hernandez. people come there with problems like one woman at the start of the pandemic? >> interior she told me she lost her job of 33 years. >> she had no benefits and only one days worth of food.

placer county animal services letting her know that her dog, ziggy, waparadise fire. a walrus tried to catch a ride as he climbed on the boat. wally the walrus has become a local celebrity since he was first spotted in march. he travels along the coast. a man in france is using his expertise in robotics to help his disabled son walk. he hopes his invention will help many others. here is how it works. >> reporter: it is the pride every parent feels when they watch their child take the first steps. his 16-year-old son has a genetic condition that prevents him from walking. my son told me one day, dad, you're a robotics engineer, why don't you make one that can
