weather. >> since you mentioned air- quality, it will be a concern again this morning. i will start with the right now air-quality conditions. there is a lot of green over the bay area right now. most everybody is breaking up with either good or a few locations at moderate. it is a good story in terms of the air-quality. i will show you the smoke future cast coming up in a bit. the marine area is out there for a lot of people. some sunshine peeking through and we are right around 60 degrees. daytime highs will be a little bit cooler with daytime highs climbing into the upper 80s. see you in a few minutes. an investigation is underway in sunnyvale after what appears to be a shooting at a kiplac rrdrivin sunn pol

crime scene and talking to witnesses. a fire truck was also spotted on the scene. we have reached out to the department of public safety and we are waiting to hear back. this is a look at the sunset over concord. and air- quality advisory has been extended through the rest of today. smoke is expected to be worse at higher elevations. and to the dixie fire, flames are slowing but they are not out altogether. the fire has burned nearly 500,000 acres which is nearly the size of the city of houston. here is the tally so far. 370 homes and buildings have been destroyed. in neighboring areas like chester, it is basically a ghost town.

people have packed up and left. that is most, but not all. >> the impact of this fire is tremendous and tragic. some are staying to protect their neighbors properties >> four firefighters are recovering after a tree limb fell on them on saturday morning. and the weather outlast is cooperating with firefighters. >> there is a blanket of smoke covering the fire which keeps the fire covered up from the sun and the key. it causes the humidity levels to recover better than we have been seeing. >> the target date to have that fire contained is august 20th which is dependent on the weather. for more information about the dixie fire, a federal judge has role and poib the orissuon

a tr thatdixie fire is officially under investigation. the utility has until august 16th to respond. and for information on how you can help, go to https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.c . road closures are keeping people out of those mandatory evacuation areas. a lucky few got to come home yesterday. >> reporter: mike walker is allowed to be back home and grateful to have a roof over his head. >> at least i could sleep after that. >> reporter: many surrounding communities cannot say the same. homes at the top of hillcrest boulevard have been destroyed.

run can relate to those friends. his lush greenery and home of 47 years was lost to the river fire. his family barely made an escape. >> my house was fully engulfed in flames. we are disappointed, but we will bounce back. >> reporter: firefighters continue helping. ron is eager for all evacuations to lift and is ready to rebuild. many families in the depths of destruction are anxiously awaiting a chance to return home. >> the families allowed to return home had to be accompanied by an escort just together essentials. a close call this weekend. firefighters were able to tackle and outbuilding fire. flames spread to would thereby house and brush. luckily crews were able to put it out within minutes.

and now to our drought emergency. santa clara county residents need to do a better job of conserving water. the water district has asked residents to cut water usage by 15%. a new report shows that they conserved 0% use just as much water as and 2019. with the drop picture changing by the day, we are keeping you updated. go to kpix.com . new data shows transmission rates of the virus are dipping across the state and the bay area. hospitalizations state usually lag in affection spikes are rising and some areas. restaurants are grappling with the new problem and some are having to close down again because of breakthrough cases from their staff. we look at how those restaurants are trying to cope.

>> reporter: the sign outside the restaurant reads that it will be temporarily closed for all services until further notice. stay healthy and wear your mask. the restaurant says it made the tough call after i guess came down with covid. the staff got tested and three workers tested positive shortly after >> we really went out of our way to make sure that we sanitize everything and followed the rules. for 14 months we had no issues. we opened up again in march and required our staff to be vaccinated and then to have this happen now when we are show short staff, it is heartbreaking? >> the managing partner says the closure means a loss of $75,000 in sales, wages, and wasted product >> it is costly for the

business and our staff that have lost their income for two weeks. it was a safety and well-being of our staff in our guests. >> restaurants are steadily recovering and searching for workers. this restaurant in japan town is closed until wednesday because of three breakthrough cases among its fully vaccinated staff. one of the cases is asymptomatic and the other two showed mild symptoms. they decided to remain shattered to allow staff to be tested twice before reopening. two of the rapid antigen results were negative until they were given a pcr test. in oakland, this sign was posted stating the fully vaccinated staff members tested positive. >> 78% of eligible san francisco residents are fully vaccinated. free vaccinations are

available at the music festival. they are at 19th avenue. center will be there and free concerts and vaccinations continue on august 15th and the 29th. a last-minute push to get students vaccinated before heading back to school. expanding surface. the agency is bringing back plenty of rounds as people returned to work and school. we are off to a foggy start this morning. we will be right back.

welcome back. several back-to-school events are helping students get ready to return to class this week. public health officials are urging children to get vaccinated. wilson walker has more on

vaccine hesitancy. >> reporter: a big push to get more students vaccinated. that was the goal a columbia middle school. i spoke with one of the students and she says a lot of her friends want nothing to do with it. >> a lot of us do not want to get vaccinated. they think it is suspicious. >> reporter: she was not strongly opposed to getting the vaccine. with a return to class over one week away, she figured that now was the time. >> we only got up because i'm going to school. >> she got her shot at this fair to launch the school year. medical experts would like to see a lot more 12 to 17-year- olds do the same. >> we can improve the vaccination rate as we are preparing to go back to school. >> reporter: there is a porsche to get more students vaccinated. clinics were held across the

bait area, many targeting the young crowd. >> we will give them a raffle ticket. >> that was in oakland where vaccines are being administered on school campuses >> we started this past wednesday. we are vaccinating the first day of orientation. >> what will transmission look like among those who will not get vaccinated and those who cannot get vaccinated? >> i worry about five-year-old to 11-year-olds. hopefully the pediatric vaccines will come online and october so that we can eliminate that risk quickly. across the bay the warriors held their official back-to- school giveaway in san

francisco. there was music and balloons and they picked up note books and backpacks and ava went home with warrior swag. warrior stars handed out bobble heads. and antioch collegestudent will host her ninth annual school supply giveaway. the event provides backpacks for students. she created the event when she was a sixth grader. she wanted to help out students that will come to school without school supplies. the contra costa health services had a pop-up vaccination site. the east bay transit agency is restoring many routes including the 600 series of bus lines to school and the all night or 800 series and several routes across the bay. ac transit says they will

continue expanding service in the coming months. i'm going to start out the forecast with a little bit of ac earthquake that happened at 3:24 this morning. it was center down in the south bay about one mile southeast of saratoga. if we look at the map where you get the reports from the usgs from people acknowledging it was felt, it was felt widely enough here that it registers on the map but look at the shades of light blue for communities right around saratoga. you had to be pretty close for this mild 2.3. if you are up with this this morning, and you felt something around 3:24, you did. we have no reports of damage, thankfully. alive look outside right now. it is cloudy out there and this

is the majority of marine layer. it will look hazy this morning. the sunrise will have that erie looking orange tends to with today. the same story applies in today's smoke. the smoke will stay elevated. you will continue to see hayes in the sky. near to the ground it's a good story in terms of air quality. if we watch the future cast at 6:00, we can watch this clear pattern as the onshore flow moves in and throughout the second half of today in the monday. a little bit of smoke does remain and some sensors are reading moderate out there in the south bay and the east bay. they will go green overthe next several hours. even though we are doing a good job of clearing out the smoke,

with the bay area air-quality having still issued that air- quality advisory through today, the official forecast is that the potential is there for moderate air-quality. that is a worst-case scenario. the rest of the state is a different story. current temperatures have us in the low 60s. we can see the marine layer worth the great is coming from. that will melt back to the coast. we will get a light mist out of this along the coast. daytime highs, the coolest day in the whole seven-day forecast. mid-80s, 83, santa rosa. oakland, 70. we will take that 70 and oakland today and watch it warm up to near 80. it will get warmer through the seven-day forecast. santa rosa, upper 80s. for inland stva

live from the cbs bay studios, this is kpix5 news. it is 6:29. thank you so much for joining us. let's start with a quick check of our weather. >> considering the top concerned this morning will be the air-quality, i'd like to start out with a few of what the sensors are showing us. most of it is good news. the sensors in the south bay are mostly green but we have an area down on the peninsula that is piled up with more hayes that there is. it is moderate air-quality. the green is showing up for most of the tri-valley and thci

it will look cloudy out there today and you will see some smoke. the camera over dublin shows hazy skies. good news on the air-quality readings here at the ground. we are sitting right around 60 for most locations. daytime highs will be cooler than yesterday. this will be the coolest day in the entire forecast. see you for the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. people that are fully vaccinated are making up an increasing number of positive tests. at the same time, unvaccinated people are nearly 5 times as likely to get infected as those that are vaccinated. almost all people don't land in the hospital and died our unvaccinated. vaccination numbers are on the rise but there are major concerns about the delta variant. john lawrence has more.

crash and san leandro. fire crews rushed to the scene yesterday morning on the northbound 880. first responders found a nissan question on his left side against a retaining wall. the passenger did not survive. the injured driver was arrested for dui. and one person is dead after crashing their car into a store in livermore yesterday. we have the details on the aftermath. butt the damage at the pet food express is extensive. people have come by all day and evening to check it out and to share their condolences with the family that is in morning. flowers sit outside this pet food express alongside rubble and car parts. the site of a violent deadly crash. >> it is just very tragic. >> i could not believe it. i wasn't sure how it might have happened. >> reporter: a man and a pickup

hill where $1 trillion infrastructure bill cleared a major hurdle. the bill advances in the senate. it is off to a showdown with progressive democrats in the house. it includes a $550 billion in spending above what congress was planning to approve for infrastructure over the next eight years. if that bill passes, states are eyeing the money they could get including $25 billion for california highways at $360 million for transportation and hawaii. it is unclear when the vote will happen. the legislation faces an uncertain future in the house. is sheriff is promising a comprehensive investigation into a complaint against úgover york. it accuses him of groping a

a team aims to shelter and care for animals this fire season. we report on the millions of dollars awarded to uc davis and how that money will be used during emergencies. >> these images of animals injured in the campfire reuniting with their owners are priceless. nursing him back to help comes at a cost. for some, the road to recovery is long. the program was focused in and around yolo county. the newly created california veterinary emergency team will change that. it is funded by $3 million in state money. >> it will work with all of the different partners throughout the state so everybody is working off of the same playbook and modeled after the disaster network which has used

fish skin to treat animals burned and while fires. they will administer the program working with counties statewide and various nonprofit organizations. we will try to establish the veterinary care elements. we will have equipment and supplies here in davis. uc davis will work with the department of agriculture to expand the ability to respond and bring the expertise wherever it is. >> no matter what disaster is involved, we have the ability to shift and provide the best care possible for the animals. >> that was rachel wulff reporting. torrential rain triggered flash flooding and parts of the midwest. the streets look like rivers in

that same area was under a severe thunderstorm watch into the morning with potential for hail and even an isolated tornado. there was also significant damage in western wisconsin. impossible tornado tore up several barns in a s we of the of madison. let's send it over to our meteorologist with the check of our local weather. we will check on the air- quality first. i will show you the good news on how the smoke will be moved a bit out of the bay area. the air-quality down near the ground we are breathing will be pretty good. i showed you the air-quality sensors right at 6:30. they are all in the good category. it will look a bit hazy. the same story we have had for the last few days. especially sunrise and sunset.

this guy will take on that are rinsed hands. that is of you in oakland looking down 880 with gray skies. our last few shows us we are already getting sunshine. there is a little bit of an orange tends to that light as well. 60 degrees from the locations right now. 53, santa rosa. watch the future cast on how the smoke will be pushed out right there. that is a great visualization on how it will come in at the lower levels and scour out the smoke at the ground and give us better air-quality through the day. we are at moderate even though, it is showing good quality right now. this is why the bay area air- quality still houses under and

air-quality advisory today and the moderate category station. it is good news in term of improving the air-quality. low 60s and we can see where the low clouds are and where they are not. ovhere for pa the i-valley, thermi 580 anme out er. there the clouds will melt back to the coast and it will be sunshine more than anything else. we still get some miss out of it along the coast and perhaps in the east bay hills. don't be surprised if you notice that through the morning hours. daytime highs will be cooler than yesterday. upper 80s for places like concord and livermore.

santa rosa goes to 83 and oakland goes to 70. there is a subtle warm up as you look out and you can see that by the end of this week. we will warm up into the upper 80s for san jose and upper 70s for oakland. inland, it will be low 100s. we will keep the temperatures at the coast a 70 degree day by the time we get to thursday. the smoke will be the focus for the next 24 hours, but it is a good-looking story on clearing out the lower levels. >> i preferred the cooler temperatures. the warm up is at the back half of the week. >> yes. we will feel it more so for those inland valleys. in the bay, it may not be that much of an issue. we could be getting back to the 100s in the east bay by thursday and friday.

a black bear wandered into a grocery store in southern california catching shoppers rpthscpoer ranch thfernando valley? >> i was freaking out. he looked at keout too. >> reporter: she nervously

watched as this air entered a ralphs in porter ranch. shocking customers not used to shopping with a california black bear at their neighborhood grocery store. campbell was at a nearby atm which he felt something breathing on her leg. >> all of a sudden this bear, he was about waist high. i looked at him and said, oh my god, you are a rare. >> she chased the 120 pound bear off and it ran into the grocery store. the animal made its way across the parking lot and was spotted at two other locations prompting concerns that there might be more than one bear on the prowl. authorities say it was just one. the department of fish and wildlife managed to contain the bear and then tranquilize it before moving the animal to a

safer location. the bear appeared to be disoriented and away from suitable habitat. >> it was decided the best route was a chemically immobilizing the animal which we were successful in doing. it is on its way back to angeles national forest for release >> they believe the ongoing drought and recent fires are sending wildlife into the community in search of food and water. >> please do not feed them. we need them to stay out of harm's way. >> i noticed on my way out the trash bins, you could tell they were in the trash bins on the other side of the parking lot. >> wildlife officials plan to take the bear deep into the forest to eliminate chances of it returning to the neighborhood. in oakland three was turned into a skate part yesterday. it was in front of the fox

what appears to be a late-night shooting is under investigation. video shows police securing the crime scene and escorting witnesses from the area. the dixie fire is slowing but not stopping. it has burned 500,000 acres causing extensive damage. the target date to have the fire contained is august 20. and air advisory has been extended until the end of today. the smoke will be worse at the higher elevations. virus transmission numbers likely dropping in the bay area but hospitalization rates are rising in some areas. 50% of the u.s. population is fully vaccinated. shots will be available today for the rest of the concerts that run this month. good news on current air-
