i'm anne-marie green. more than one year into the pandemic, the fight against the coronavirus appears to be taking another wrong turn here in the u.s. the number of new infections is now averaging 100,000 a day. a number not seen in six months. but the nation's top infectious disease expert dr. anthony fauci hopes the fda will give full approval to a vaccine in just weeks which could lead to a wave of vaccine mandates. bradley blackburn has the latest details from new york. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: the news about the delta variant is moving the needle, so to speak. about 20% of unvaccinated lds, manmay it's made themth coming. the coronavirus vaccine could be fully approved by the fda this month. >> i don't predict, but i hope it will be within the next few weeks. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci

says that could lead to new vaccine requirements at the local level. >> that could be colleges, universities, places of business. a whole variety. and i strongly support that. the time has come as we've got to go the extra step to get people vaccinated. >> reporter: about 50% of americans are fully vaccinated. >> no, no, mandates have got to go. >> reporter: these nurses in north texas protested. an order by their hospitals get the shots or lose your job. >> i'm not here to say you should get the vaccine or shouldn't get the vaccine but that you should have a choice. >> reporter: children under 12 are still not eligible for the vaccines. pediatric cases in the u.s. are soaring, just as school starts back up. nearly 20% of cases in the last week of july were kids. >> i feel safer. it's one of the main reason i want one. >> reporter: adrian is about to begin ninth grade. he was one of 100 people this vaccine popup clinic in compton. >> i want to be prepared and

stay in school. >> reporter: the jsatorhose tnts ca reopened its border to vaccinated americans this morning. >> it's really encouraging that we're going to be able to see our american neighbors, friends and in many cases family members come back to our community. >> reporter: canadians can start visiting the u.s. on august 21st. and americans will also need a negative covid test before they can head up to canada. and also, anne-marie, children under the age of 12 who are obviously unable to be vaccinated at this point, they will still be able to go to canada if they are with a vaccinated adult. anne-marie? >> all right that is good to know. bradley blackburn in new york. bradley, thank you so much. so breaking overnight, another setback for new york governor andrew cuomo who is facing possible impeachment over sexual harassment allegations. his top aide melissa de rosa announced her resignation late sunday night. in a statement she said the past

two years have been, quote, emotionally and mentally trying. but she did not offer an exact reason for her departure. meanwhile, a former executive assistant to governor cuomo, who filed a criminal complaint against him, is publicly coming forward for the very first time. in an exclusive interview, britney spoke with cbs this morning and the times union, saying that the governor needs to be held accountable. >> he groped me. he touched me. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with "cbs early morning news" in the times union, brittany commisso detailed the harassment she was subjected to at the hands of new york governor andrew cuomo in 2019 and 2020. >> they started to be hugs and kisses on the cheek and then there was at one point a hug and when he went to go kiss me on the cheek he would quickly turn his head and he kiss me on the

lips. >> reporter: kmis sew previously identified as executive assistant number 1 is among 11 women in independent investigation found to be sexually harassed by the governor. on friday, she filed a criminal complaint against the governor with the albany sheriff's office which could lead to criminal charges. >> the governor needs to be held accountable. >> just so i'm clear again. >> uh-huh. >> being held accountable to you means seeing the governor charged with a crime? >> what he did to me was a crime. he broke the law. >> reporter: appearing on cnn over the weekend, the governor's attorney pushed back against commisso's claims. >> he did not grope her and there was evidence that was provided by several individuals to the attorney general about potential motives for her to have made that claim. >> reporter: on sunday, arkansas governor asa hutchinson joined the chorus cuomo resign. >> no woman should have to go to the workplace and have to choose between a paycheck and being assaulted.

>> reporter: governor cuomo denies all accusations of sexual harassment or unwanted advances and says he will not step down. the new york state assembly is expected to finish impeachment irr th ek elesbs news, new york. you can see more of our exclusive interview ahead on "cbs this morning" at 7:00 a.m. with brittany commisso. a panel of scientific experts appointed by the u.n. released a landmark report on climate change and will include a stark warning about the expected changes to oceans, icecaps and land in the coming decades. tropical cyclones are getting stronger and wetter. co-author of the report says the trends are getting worse and there's nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. the so-called dixie fire is now the largest single wild fire in california history. the fire has grown to more than 489,000 acres since it started about a month ago.

more than 600 structures including homes have been destroyed. at least four people in the town of greenville are missing. governor gavin newsom blames climate change for the unprecedented fire. >> we have a deep responsibility to rebuild this community, to do more to continue to protect communities like this but also address the tensity of what is occurring globally but manifesting smash mouth ways here in california and that's climate change. >> the dixie fire has burned an area more than twice the size of new york city. it is 21% contained. the summer olympics in tokyo are officially in the books. america earned 113 medals, more than any other country. fireworks lit up the sky over tokyo last night during the closing ceremony, which took place amid covid concerns. this was the first year ever spectators were not allowed to attend. the olympic flame was extinguished. the coldran had been burning since the olympics opened on july 23rd.

taliban forces in afghanistan seized more key cities and there's progress in an infrastructure bill. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. "the washington post" reports senators are pushing an infrastructure bill closer to passage. more than a dozen senate republicans joined all 50 senate democrats to cut off debate on the massive $1.2 trillion infrastructure deal in a vote last night. that is the last major hurdle before voting happens on final passage of the bipartisan bill, which will likely happen tomorrow. the deal, however, faces an uncertain future in the house. "the chicago tribune" says the brother of an officer gunned down in chicago is speaking out. while another officer fights for his life. ella french was shot and killed during a traffic stop late saturday. the 29-year-old had worked as a chicago cop since april of 2018. authorities say the officers pulled over a car carrying two men and a woman.

one of the suspects opened fire and the officers shot back. they say a second officer was critically injured. mayor lori lightfoot described it as a very sad day. >> we must remind ourselves every single day our officers are fearless in the face of danger. they run to danger, to protect us. we can never forget that. >> all three suspects are in custody. and the associated press reports the taliban took control of key northern afghan cities as the battle there rages on, that includes a neighbors provincial capital where militant fighters seized the governor's office and police headquarters along with a main prison building where 500 inmates including taliban fighters were freed. all this comes as u.s. troops complete their withdrawal after two decades in the country. so still ahead, another chance to hit the jackpot. the powerball lottery is offering a new opportunity to become an overnight millionaire.
