99 for in the locations. in the 70s and the bay. the whole forecast in a few minutes, back to you. new vaccine mandate for all first responders in contra costa county running into pushback. they will soon after show proof of vaccination or test weekly for coronavirus. as kpix 5's andre rick connor reports, it has not exactly got a warm reception. >> reporter: the county experienced a surge in cases in hospitalizations in the last two weeks, positive cases jumped 30%. the county health officer says this is to protect first responders, but some of them say this is crossing the line. >> we do support and encourage getting vaccinated and all our members. we provided them with a lot of education on the topic. at the same time, we have respect for their ability to make their decision. >> reporter: the union president

represents firefighters from seven different counties from santa clara to napa. he says the one positive aspect of contra costa county's mandate is that it provides a weekly testing alternative. something confire says it has been doing for weeks >> 18 we have been able to help keep her numbers down is through the testing, and encouraging employees to get the vaccination. and those that choose not to get it, making sure, if any symptoms occur that we rapidly test them. >> reporter: confire's assistant chief says his department has seen roughly half a dozen employees showing symptoms or testing positive in the last week. many firefighters across the bay area argue, regardless of vaccination status, they have been on the front lines through the worst of the pandemic, and getting the shot should be their choice. >> we are not anti-vaccine, we are pro-vaccine, we want everyone to get vaccinated. but, we are anti-mandates.

welcome back, 6:12, thank you for spending your saturday with us and good morning. some uc davis scientists warning communities near lake tahoe could be at risk of extreme flooding in the future. heather janssen has the details. >> reporter: known for its serene skies and lovely lake views, the drought and tahoe felt by tourists >> it sp >> reporter: the water that leaves a lasting impression, but in recent years battling low lake levels >> sometimes the lake is really low, in their droughts, sometimes you get tons of snow. every few years. >> reporter: uc davis researchers say climate change is making its impact. the most recent report looking at the lake says intense heat could make it more likely for the area to see more rain, then the snow we are used to. >> definitely having warmer winters. a study says because of that, streets may fill fast and snowpacks would melt and levels could rise by as much as 10 inches a day.

>> we would probably get unprecedented rates of streams. >> reporter: a uc davis researcher says there is no time frame on when it could happen. >> as time goes by, the likelihood of it happening increases, but it could happen six months from now. that is the frightening part. >> reporter: areas like truckee could be one of the towns impacted. >> flooding in truckee. that would be difficult. >> reporter: a battle of the elements and mother nature leaving her legacy on the lake. heather janssen reporting, researchers say it is a balancing act to decide how much water to release to avoid drought conditions. >> let's get into the forecast, we have good news in terms of air quality, for the most part, the uncheerful helping us out. it will look hazy out there. you can see the smoke in the

sky but the air quality on the ground should be pretty good. let's switch to the weather computer and show you the view from on top of the radar, looking towards the bridge. a few clouds out there this morning. mainly in the immediate pay, we look at the top of the newscast, a pretty good-looking marine layer blanketing the city, cannot see much of the tops of the buildings. down 880 it is gray here. if you in san jose will paint the same picture. how the marine layer will melt in one second first a look at air quality. if we have an area of concern, it would be two locations specifically. one, up in the north bay, but not just the northbay generally, the second specific location would be the higher elevations of the northbay. smoke coming down from the north, this makes sense, higher concentrations of smoke for the northbay, but also relatively elevated and high stuff. qualy godo. looking at the stba

air clear through the day. on chuanfu on cbsn bay area takes the smoke and clears away. still hazy off in the distance but good news for their quality down here on the ground level. temperatures out there right around 60 for most locations. a cool 55 in santa rosa. looking at the marine layer is and isn't, the picture clearly painted on here. plenty of clouds made their way into the media bay, also for the northbay, and around san jose, you probably will see sunshine in the next hour and if we look at the inland valleys, waking up to clear skies. it is really just the haze off in the distance you will have. clouds melt into the late morning. however, by the time we get into late afternoon, a batch of higher clouds will geopal storm, trying to throw clouds into the pacific but that's it, a few clouds, high clouds by

the afternoon only. daytime highs today, south bay numbers mid to upper 80s. temperatures for the inland valleys climb well into the upper 90s. 97 concord, but low hundreds out here. this is where they keep is to be felt today. getting back into the media bay and no issue. mid to upper 70s for most locations. low 90s, as soon as you get into the valley, novato 91, santa rosa 92. sonoma, 92 and napa upper 80s. plenty of low 100s for ukiah and lake county. how close the numbers are to records in the next half hour. in the 7-day forecast for san francisco, oakland and san jose, not a whole lot of change, a little drop off in numbers as we go towards the end of the week. temperatures closer to average and of course the numbers we would really like to see change the most are in the top line

live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news . 6:31 and thank you for joining us, i am gianna franco and let's start with a quick check of your forecast with meteorologist darren peck. >> another hot day for in the locations, back on the verge of 100 for most of inland contra costa and alameda county. looking at the bay, another cloudy start, temperatures well behaved and where they should be this time of year. upper 60s in the city. plenty of mid 70s to the bay, everyone's daytime high in a few minutes but first, where we stand the morning. right around 60 with low clouds in the medium immediate pain clear skies for inland valleys

in the general take away for inland parts of the bay area is 99, we will keep much of the bay in the mid to upper 70 degree range. talking about air quality as well, the forecast on that in the complete forecast for now, back to you. new evacuation orders issued in tama county due to the dixie fire and for the time being, evacuation orders will not be lifted and parts of plymouth county as plan. cal fire says activity increased early friday leading to a number of spot fires and thunderstorms in the afternoon. making conditions more challenging. containment stands at 31%. to the coronavirus, the number of covid cases in california at the 4 million mark. 14,000 new cases reported today, in the positivity rate is 6.6%. the number of children hospitalized with covid has hit a pandemic high. according to the cdc, on

average, two and 46 children admitted to hospitals every day between august 14 and 10th. a 27% jump from the previous seven days. and significant increase from the highs of 270 daily admissions in january. live in san francisco where a high number of teenagers are getting vaccinated. the most recent data shows 96% of 12 to 17-year-old in san francisco have received at least one dose. in the meantime, the fda has officially authorized eighth third vaccine dose for people who have compromised immune systems or received an organ transplant. right now the booster is only for those who got the pfizer moderna vaccine, in a skyler henry or reports, cases among the unvaccinated or putting a strain on hospitals across the country. >> reporter: the cdc advisory committee voted unanimously to recommend third dose of pfizer rtain er i think we are looking

a school district already has students testing positive for covid-19. >> one of those cases at our renda intermediate. most of the cases or cases coming in our cases that are not exposures at the school site but exposures that have been exposed prior to school starting. >> parents of those in contact with the students testing positive were immediately notified. the district says they plan to create an online dashboard to track the number of cases. lesser county schools received at least 50 medical exemptions for students saying they do not have to wear a mask. 85% of the exemptions have come from the steam the same dr. the extension letter, the one we provide, each and every one of them is from the same clinic. we will deal with it appropriately.

costa county. today is warmer than yesterday. let's start with air quality. this has been top of mind so for so many. a good story, coming for a close-up look on the different air quality sensors. majority green, a little yellow mixed in. there are moderate locations read this morning but be areawide, for the most part, majority, good air quality with an occasional moderate reading. it so you get to wake county where the air quality is unhealthy. moderate.unhealthy sensitive groups from most locations appear, largely to the fact it is closer to the source of where the smoke is coming from. higher in elevation you are closer to the smoke which is elevated in the atmosphere. not right here, the view from the bay, treasure island towards the city skyline shows a gray sky there. gray all the way down 880 been in san jose, even though it
