the fire jumps highway 50. new evacuation orders underway this morning. good morning, it is sunday, august 22nd. let's start with a quick check of our weather. >> the majority of smoke is still heading toward taco. air quality is good in comparison to where we have

been. you can see green all the way up to ukiah. it is moderate for fairfield, napa, and it will be moderate and general for today. the air-quality will be better today than yesterday. we are staying on the cool side. i will have your complete forecast coming up in a few minutes. police are investigating and another deadly hit and run. it is a 40 a deadly crash in san jose this year. it happened just before 1:00 this morning. when police arrived, the victim had already died. witnesses say that a car that the victim and then left the scene. police are looking for evidence and any security evidence.

northbay fire crews came to the rescue of three teenage boys who found themselves stuck on a 400 foot cliff and marin county late last night. fire crews were called out at 8:00 last night. the teens got stuck. fire crews and the coast guard were able to quickly locate them and then airlifted him to safety. >> they were down on the beach and decided to climb up. we absolutely advise against that. you can get into a lot of trouble very quick. there are points for probably all of us were falling on the cliff side. it was 100 feet above sharp rocks. >> the good news is the boys were not injured. new evacuations have been ordered and el dorado county.

the flames jumped highway 50 and the highway is shut down between placerville and meyersville. the flames have burned more than 90,000 acres. >> reporter: those dry windy conditions across highway 50. crews are thankful the red flag warning has ended for now as their firefight continues. crackling flames on an active day for the fire. going to trees and rising over bridges near the gray rock campground. >> that fire is getting moved along. >> reporter: often off wind planning the flames and sending sparks across highwa 50. ino, la

shasta, trinity, and taco. people who live in homes are exempt. looking live out in san francisco, tourists are having to deal with new vaccine requirements. showing proof of vaccination in order to get inside a business. we caught up with some visitors to see how they are adjusting to the new requirements. >> terminous in san francisco are showing proof they are fully vaccinated. >> did you know about the vaccine policy before you got

civic center. organ transplant recipients, patients undergoing cancer treatment and people with a weekend immune system will meet the criteria. tomorrow the fda is expected to give full approval for pfizer's vaccine. health experts say the move would likely spur a way for vaccinations among people that have been hesitant to get a covid shot. it could give public and private organizations more of a footing to enforce mandates and work. hundreds came together to urge action in afghanistan. wilson walker reports from fremont on a plea from families there. >> reporter: as a situation and afghanistan appears to be deteriorating, growing concern and frustration. >> we were told that the airport is closed and they are

90 day event. with the situation we have in there right now, 10 or 15 days is not realistic. >> i want to make it clear to people that don't understand, the united states promised people that you could come to the u.s. if you worked with us and served as intelligence, translators, if you helped us in this work. that was the deal that was made. >> so what two people do now that they have been told not to go to the airport? this group says they are just getting started to keep this story front and center. we are here in fremont. in the meantime, a bay area woman is trying to get her husband out of afghanistan. they have been married for two years. she has been trying to help him emigrate to the united states.

welcome back. hundreds of people in the northbay are better equipped with tools to compton safe water. residents picked up water saving kits at an event called drought drop box. the free tools include a toilet leak detector tablets, a low-

flow showerhead. >> if you have an older 2.5 gallon per minute showerhead, you will be saving a gallon every minute. >> the kit also includes a five minute timer to help people take quicker showers. residents tacoma yard signs to remind neighbors as well. i want to take a look at air-quality once again. this is likely top of mind for many people. right now, these are the current readings from the epa centers across the bay area. we are looking at yellow or green which is good or moderate. we come in for a close look at the south bay and there is a yellow showing up for san jose. we work our way back up over toward the tri-valley. livermore and dublin are reading moderate at this hour. it is good for the rest of the

bay area. santa rosa is holding onto green. it will be moderate for today which was put out by the air quality management district. that is your blanket forecast. there is enough smoke left over that we could be in the moderate category for a good portion of today. if we watch the high-resolution smoke forecast, you can see smoke over the bay area now. see this little circulation out here? it shows up in the smoke. that is a weak little coastal eddie wrapping some smoke into it. so we are not pulling and smoke directly from the wildfires at least not down here at ground level. all of the smoke pushed out over the coast, there is a supply of smoke just sitting out there. even though we've got a helpful

onshore flow, it is tapping into smoke off of the coast and pulling it back into the bay. so we will not clear out the smoke entirely. since we are not pulling it indirectly from the fires, it is better. we are looking at the golden gate bridge. the marine layer is really stick out there. there is a lot of clouds. it is not fog here on the bridge but you will wake up to gray skies over much of the gray area. it is a little bit higher than normal. and that is majority of clouds and not smoke. it will be tough to tell the difference this time of year. san jose, clear skies in the next hour. that is all cloud and here is the marine layer. by late morning, it will go all the way back to the beaches and we will have sunshine.

we will get a light drizzle on the coast and the east bay hills this morning. daytime highs will stay on the cool side. as much as 10 degrees cooler than usual. upper 60s to low 70s for much of the bay. san francisco, oakland, is where we notice a warming trend. mid 70s in san jose. upper 80s by thursday and friday. as we look at the inland valleys, from the low to mid- 80s to the low 100 by the time we get towards the end of the week. those communities like santa rosa will warm up into the low 90s by the time we get to the end of this next week. back over to you. the first day of school at diablo valley college will be tomorrow. students of both campuses will be required to wear masks and

class. students must go through a self- assessment before stepping onto the campus. they are supposed to stay away if they have impossible covid- 19 symptom or if they been exposed to the coronavirus. there is an -- csu students are failing are withdrawing at high rates. they reported nearly 700 high failure courses and classes with enrollment of at least 100. and fresno, the number of high failure courses was 453. that problem exists across all 23 campuses. we are back in the saddle again. look at your saturday night scores. around here, it is a giant segment. 36,000+ saw quite a show.

of our weather. >> top of my these stasis air- quality. it is relatively good news. it is good air-quality all the way up through mendocino county. san jose, moderate air-quality. it is green for the immediate bay, and then for concorde also. those are the right now numbers. if you look at the forecast for the rest of today, moderate is your take away. smoke is improving. we will take a look at the detailed forecasts. here are your daytime highs, 10 degrees cooler for those inland locations. a new wave of covid infections is putting a new strain on hospitals and healthcare workers across the nation. nearly 146,000 on friday which is up 37% in the last two

covid test. anyone who refuses will be put on unpaid leave. taking a look at the hamptons, an area where hurricane henri has made landfall. millions of residents in the northeast could be affected. a storm surge of up to five feet is expected for parts of coastal new england and long island. andrew cuomo who leaves office on tuesday says he is employing national guard members. >> we are in the calm before the storm. it is misleading as to how serious the situation could be. >> power outages could last for a week or more. they are warning customers to stay away from downed power lines. and windows are boarded up in some areas. this is on the eastern tip of long island.

threats. the pentagon says there has been no change in what they call the enemy situation. they will keep processing citizens who show up. officials say at least 12 people have been killed in and around the airport over the last week. eyewitness video emerged showing afghan guards and other images of people at the airport drenched in blood. >> i haven't been to the airport because of these problems. >> reporter: this man has been hiding because he worked for the u.s. government. >> reporter: is the u.s. helping you? >> i do not have a u.s. visa. if i go, my family would be at risk. >> reporter: he fears that taliban's tightening grip, this is where they now wait at an air base.

california airport. we have learned the identity of the man arrested. the 51-year-old caused a massive hold up at the airport after stealing an airport vehicle and then hiding in the ceiling of one of the terminals. >> i think when you go to an airport you expect security and it is surprising when this happens. >> he was arrested on vandalism. taking a live look and san jose where a local community honored president barack obama. they named a busy downtown street after him. autumn street is now barack obama boulevard. it is a tribute to our 44th president that is long overdue. >> he called out in the best of america, and that america still exists. this boulevard, whenever we walk by or drive-by will remind

us that america is still here. >> a local committee raise private funds to help pay for the renaming of that street. we show you how extensive the marine layer is this morning. we will look at the inland valley as we get into contra costa county. this is above the diablo valley. that is mt. diablo on the screen. i'm going to play the last 15 minutes. you can see the clouds searching onshore. it gives us a good idea that the marine layer is very widespread. it is already surrounding the fot of mt. diablo. and i'd like to go back to the air-quality. it is either good or moderate. it is greenest to go up the

peninsula. it is still moderate in the tri- valley. moderate air-quality for napa and fairfield. the official forecast today from the bay area air-quality has us staying at moderate. watch the high-resolution smoke forecast. light amounts of smoke here. as we get into the afternoon, what is happening is there is a lot of smoke pulled well off the coast. if there is still smoke out here that's been pulled down off the coast, it is almost like recycling and pulling it back into the bay. you can see that get drawn into the bay today. that is so much better than if we were getting a direct supply. thankfully, we are not and that is why the air-quality is improving. >> the clouds are high.

you can see the tops of the towers. looking down 880 and oakland, it is gray. we will see how quickly this stuff burns off. right around 60 for most locations. if we switch from current temperatures, we can see how widespread it is. now we are going to play this forward. and then it will all melt back to the coast. a little bit of haze from the smoke, but more sunshine than anything else. it is misty along the coast. not widespread. your daytime highs today will be cool for the inland valleys, 83, concord. 82, livermore. oakland, 68. and your seven day forecast, a warming trend shows up.

it shows you the warm up by the time we get towards the end of this week. 88 by friday. in the inland valley, our top line here, low 80s today to the low 100s. a noticeable warm up for concord and livermore. low 90s by the time we get to the end of this next coming week. the air-quality yesterday in the south bay was a little bit better than up in the city. that has flipped on its head now. >> once you get right into the heart of san jose, we are raiding moderate. because we are getting that onshore flow, pulling it back into the bay, you can sometimes see worse air-quality when that happens. for right now, we are ay.

a cruise ship has just set sail from california for the first time and more than a year. we have more on the maiden voyage as a carries passengers to mexico. >> carnival panorama is taking off on saturday afternoon launching the first cruise ship in a year and a half of the pandemic. >> we are so excited. >> we are from sacramento, california. we are beyond excited. we left our three kids home with grandma, thank you. >> reporter: the panorama is the port in the 20 years. >> the ship is brand spanking new. >> reporter: officials say the ship is heading to mexico for a seven day voyage with about 3000 passengers and 70% of capacity.
