good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. more americans are now facing vaccine requirements less than 24 hours after the fda granted full approval of the pfizer covid vaccine. within hours of yesterday's decision the pentagon, retailer cvs and the new york city school system among others announced they will require employees to get shots. president biden called on more companies to step up vaccine mandates. elise preston has the latest from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. in addition to the mandates, the hope is americans will feel more eased to get the shots. pfizer's covid vaccine is fully approved for americans 16 and older. >> this approval now furthers our confidence that not only does the vaccine work, but it's also very safe. >> reporter: more than 200 million pfizer doses have been

administered since december when the fda granted an emergency use authorization. >> the fda approval is the gold standard. >> reporter: president biden hopes this helps vaccine holdouts. >> the moment you've been waiting for is here. it's time for you to get your vaccination. >> reporter: 18-year-old got her first vaccination yesterday. she said the fda approval helped ease her fears. >> social media has you brainwashed into thinking that it could be bad. >> reporter: legal experts say companies will have an easier time requiring people to be mandated to get vaccinated. >> the fda approval puts them on strong legal footing. >> reporter: some didn't waste any time. the pentagon, cvs, new york city school system announcing new mandates. >> principals, teachers, custodians, food service, you name it needs to have at least one dose by september 27th.

>> 60% of americans have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine. >> reporter: now the pfizer vaccine remains under emergency authorization for 12 to 15-year-olds as do the vaccines made by moderna and johnson & johnson which are for 18 and older. anne-marie. >> elise preston in new york. elise, thank you very much. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will speak with president biden's chief medical adviser dr. anthony fauci. we'll ask him if he thinks there will be an increase in vaccinations and whether more employers will mandate the vaccine. now to the latest developments on afghanistan where there could be a decision today on whether president biden wants the u.s. military to stay in the war torn country a little bit longer. they are scheduled to leave a week from today. the military has expanded the vaccine mission over there. they've sent helicopters and troops outside the grounds to

rescue americans. nancy cordes reports from the white house. >> reporter: despite the chaos outside kabul's airport, evacuations are picking up speed. u.s. military cargo jets evacuated more than 10,000 people, some of them americans, most of them afghans, in the past 24 hours. the pentagon confirmed that u.s. troops made a second foray off airport grounds to rescue stranded americans. >> commanders on the ground have the authority to conduct local missions as they deem appropriate to the need and we charge them with assessing the risk. >> reporter: u.s. troops are racing to get as many people out as possible before august 31st. the deadline president biden set months ago for a full u.s. withdrawal. a taliban spokesman warned the u.s. military not to stay a day longer. >> this is something you can say is a red line.

it will create mistrust between us. >> we believe that we have time between now and the 31st to get out any american who wants to get out. >> reporter: national security adviser jake sullivan. >> are you engaged in talks with the taliban over extending that deadline? how are those talks going? >> we are in talks with the taliban on a daily basis through political and security channels. i'm not going to get into the details of those discussions here to protect those discussions. >> reporter: pentagon officials confirmed that three babies have now been born on separate evacuation flights. in fact, in one case they said the aircraft commander had the plane descend in altitude to increase air pressure in the cabin and stabilize the mother's condition. both the mother and baby are doing fine we're told after the plane landed in germany. nancy cordes, cbs news, the white house.

kathy hochul becomes the first female governor in new york. there will be a ceremonial swearing in. she will make a public address this afternoon. andrew cuomo officially left office before midnight following a state investigation that he sexually harassed 11 women. he touted his record and portrayed himself as the victim of a media frenzy. >> my instinct is to fight this because it is unfair and unjust in my mind, but you also know that i love new york and i serve you. prolonging this situation could only cause governmental paralysis and that is just not an option for you and not an option for the state, especially now. >> cuomo's top aide released a statement that he was exploring his options but had no interest

more than more than 1700 firefighters and support personnel in northern california are battling to keep the massive calder wildfire out of the lake tahoe region. the 10-day old fire has burned more than 15,000 acres and destroyed more than 600 buildings. firefighters say it's the top priority. smoke from the fire forced schools and resorts in the area to close. the fire is only 9% contained. why nasa is postponing a space walk for today and the results of a probe into a january 6th shooting are released. those are some of the headlines on the morning newstand. the washington post reports an internal investigation by the u.s. capitol police cleared the officer who shot and killed ashley babbitt during the january attack on the capitol. babbitt, a 35-year-old air force

veteran from california, was shot as she tried to force her way through a set of doors leading to the speaker's lobby outside the house chamber. the report says the unidentified officer's actions were within department policy and potentially saved members of congress and staff from serious injury and possible death from the rioters. cbs boston reports a massachusetts woman says she's lucky to be alive after a tree branch fell on her car while she was inside. the huge branch fell on maureen gallagher's car in the town of palmer narrowly missing her head. she was on her way to see her husband who's recovering from a stroke at a rehab facility. she said she saw the crackling of a facility. >> i don't know why i did this, but i turned my head this way and i kept my head parallel to my shoulder and that's what saved me. >> the palmer fire chief said if the branch fell a couple of

the opening ceremony for the paralympics will be held today in tokyo. there were last-minute preparations on friday ahead of the games which run until september 6th. during today's opening ceremony the flag for afghanistan will be displayed even though the country's two paralympic athletes were not able to get there after the taliban took control. organizers say a united nations representative will carry the flag. "jeopardy" will once again turn to a series of guest hosts after the resignation of new host mike richards. miam biali will return as the first guest host. she will take three weeks of episodes when production resumes this week. richards was selected to be the new permanent host after the death of alex trebek. richards stepped down when sexist and derogatory comments
