good morning. i'm diane king hall in for anne-marie green. this morning, president biden is voeven afteradt tackever on forces in afghanistan. two separate bombings outside the kabul airport killed at least 13 u.s. troops and dozens of afghan civilians yesterday. isis-k claimed responsibility for the attack, but president biden said the evacuation of americans and afghans will continue. the white house ordered flags be flown at half staff until sunset on monday to honor the people killed in the bombings. bradley blackburn has the latest details from new york. good morning. >> reporter: diane, good morning. the president says that even with the airport bombings, he is sticking to his deadline. those evacuation flights have started up again, and it is an urgent mission. up to 1,000 americans may still be trying to get out of the country, and the airport remains under threat of attack. u.s. military commanders say they're on alert for more

violence by the islamic state at the airport in kabul. yesterday twin suicide attacks killed more than a dozen american service members and wounded more than a dozen others. it was the deadliest day for the u.s. military in over a decade. >> we will not forgive. we will not forget. we will hunt you down and make you pay. >> reporter: president biden said the withdrawal of american citizens, u.s. troops, and afghan allies will continue. >> we will not be deterred by terrorists. we will not let them stop our mission. we will continue the evacuation. >> reporter: scores of afghans were also killed and wounded, thousands are hoping to get out of the country by the end of the month with many living in makeshift camps outside the airport. the terror group isis-k claimed responsibility. >> the threat from isis is extremely real -- >> reporter: general frank mckenzie oversees the evacuation effort. >> we believe it is their desire to continue those attacks and we expect them to continue.

>> reporter: the taliban controls the outer perimeter, and the u.s. has asked them to clamp down. >> we told them you need to continue to push out the security perimeter. we've identified some roads that we would like for them to close because we assess the threat of a suicide-born threat is high. >> reporter: more than 100,000 people have been flown out of the country since august 14th, including most of the 6,500 americans living there. and several countries have now ended their evacuation flights ahead of the u.s. withdrawal. the uk says it will stop flights within the next few hours. diane, the window is closing for tens of thousands of afghans who are still trying to get out and remain gathered at that dangerous airport. >> very difficult situation. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk with representative seth moulton on his unauthorized trip to kabul. what he learned there and his response to all the criticism. breaking overnight, the u.s. supreme court is allowing

evictions to resume once again. the justices blocked a temporary ban put in place because of the pandemic. they said the cdc does not have the authority to reimpose the moratorium without congressional approval. according to the census bureau, roughly 3.5 million americans said they faced eviction in the next two months. also breaking overnight, a hurricane watch is in effect in parts of louisiana, including the new orleans area, as tropical storm ida gains strength. the storm formed in the caribbean yesterday. forecasters say it's on track to slam into the u.s. gulf coast as a major hurricane. louisiana's governor has declared a state of emergency. ida could make landfall on sunday. the 16th anniversary of hurricane katrina's landfall. covid's grip on america is tightening. all 50 states are seeing high levels of transmission. one of the hardest hit states is oregon. janet shamlian reports. >> reporter: this is the all-out

battle to save lives. in a medford, oregon, intensive care unit, all beds are full. most are unvaccinated and dying. i saw almost everyone in your icu on a ventilator. how many of them will come out of this? >> we just withdrew care on two patients so they'll die within the next hour. i think we will lose another couple by tonight. >> reporter: turnaround time after a patient dies to get another in the room is only a few hours. >> it's the worst we've ever seen. >> reporter: nurse clarissa carson is traumatized by the unprecedented number of deaths. >> the grief is tremendous. we are used to winning. us icu nurses, we're used to winning, and we're not winning. we're losing. >> reporter: oregon's covid hospitalizations are at the highest level since the pandemic started. the state has reimposed mask mandate. as a patchwork of rules and

evacuations occur across the country. >> it's important to keep our kids safe. >> reporter: illinois ordered teachers kindergarten through college to get vaccinated or tested weekly. >> this is not about a vaccine. this is about fundamental rights. >> reporter: but there's anger in the streets of new york city over a vaccine mandate for all public employees. a similar mandate in oregon which reported one of the highest increases in new cases last week sparked hundreds to protest outside the hospital. [ cheers ] inside the icu was eerily quiet. dr. ghosh says he wishes they could see the depth of suffering. >> i wish things were not so polarized and so political. we're just trying to save lives over here. >> reporter: out of the 15 beds in the icu ward that we were in, two of the patients died wednesday and two on thursday. the hospital says the current crisis is finding beds for other sick people who do not have

covid but are critical. janet shamlian, cbs news, medford, oregon. meanwhile, after months of protests by democrats, house republicans in texas have passed a controversial voting restrictions bill. lawmakers approved the measure one week after democrats ended a 38-day walkout to break quorum. it now goes to the senate where it's expected to pass. governor greg abbott said he will sign the measure which could reach his desk in the next week or two. seven capitol police officers are suing former president trump and several far-right extremist groups over the january 6th attack. the suit alleges they committed acts of domestic terrorism by sending violent mobs to the capitol. the complaint also details what happened that day including officers being assaulted and teargassed and believing their lives were threatened. mr. trump and his lawyer have not commented. coming up, royal drama on the big screen. we'll have a sneak peek at a highly anticipated movie about

"the san diego union tribune" reports for the first time prosecutors are not challenging the parole of the man who

assassinated senator robert kennedy in 1968. 77-year-old sirhan sirhan faces his 16th parole hearing today in california. the district attorney of los angeles county says prosecutors have no role in deciding whether prisoners should be released. he says the decision should be left to the parole board. sirhan's attorney says he no longer poses a safety risk. the "associated press" says the first asian giant hornet nest of the season was destroyed in washington state. officials say the nest was found in the base of a dead tree along the canadian border. workers began vacuuming out 113 worker hornets from the nest on thursday. inside the nest they found nearly 1,500 hornets in various stages of development. the two-inch-long hornet preys on bees and can deliver painful stings to humans. and "usa today" says an australian farmer who couldn't go to his aunt's funeral because of the pandemic honored her with a video of sheep forming a heart. video shows dozens of sheep

the nasdaq dropped 96 points, . th ending its five-day winning streak. more travelers are canceling their flights as covid cases surge across the country due to the delta variant. the tsa reported its lowest air travel numbers of the summer this week. the agency says more than 1.4 million people took to the skies tuesday, and 1.5 million went through checkpoints wednesday. that's a large decrease from the 2.2 million people who hopped on planes in early august. peloton is dropping the price of its original at-home bike for the second time this year. its core bike now costs close to $1,500. peloton said the cut is part of its mission to make the company's products more accessible and attainable. it's facing fierce competition from rivals producing cheaper
