captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with breaking news overnight. a powerful earthquake rocked southern mexico. the 7.0-magnitude quake hit near the popular beach resort of acapulco. it also caused buildings to rock and sway in mexico city, about 230 miles away. the earthquake caused some walls to collapse, large boulders were tossed on the road, and at least one man was killed when a post came crashing down. people were spotted running out of buildings in mexico city where the ground shook for about one minute in some areas. [ scream ] >> after the earthquake, at least one explosion lit up the night sky near a local municipal building in the cal tap appearing to knock out power. however, there was no major damage reported in mexico city. and president biden is making a push for infrastructure

spending and the need to address climate change. he toured storm destruction yesterday in new york and new jersey after the remnant ofed s flash flooding and tornadoes. he comforted victims and spoke to local officials in both states. bradley blackburn has the latest from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president visited areas yesterday where dozens of people died and survivors have had their lives up ended. the president said climate change is everyone's crisis, and it needs to be dealt with now. president biden is sounding the alarm on climate change. >> we've got to listen to the scientists and the economists and the national security experts. they all tell us this is code red. the nation and the world are in peril. >> reporter: after touring m-ravaighborod yesterday, the prent urgedss to infrastructure package t protect against future storms like ida.

>> climate change poses an existential threat to our lives, to our economy, and the threat is here. it's not going to get any better. >> reporter: residents in manville, new jersey, showed president biden the destruction. >> our daughter's nursery is on the second floor. >> it's over there in the other corner. >> reporter: megan, her husband, and 4-month-old evacuated during the storm. when they came back, they found their entire house destroyed by a fire. >> we lost everything that was valuable to us. we literally lost everything. >> reporter: progressive and moderate democrats will need to join together if they want to pass more than $4 trillion in legislation that includes spending on infrastructure and combating climate change. but some, like west virginia senator joe manchin, are concerned with the speed it's moving through congress. >> hit the pause button. let's see what happens. >> reporter: democratic leaders hope to have two infrastructure spending bills passed by the end of this month. the white house is also asking

meantime, secretary of state antony blinken is rejecting claims that americans who want to leave afghanistan are being held hostage in skyler henry reports. >> reporter: taliban soldiers fired into the air to break up a protest in kabul tuesday. there continue to be reports the taliban is blocking u.s. citizens from leaving afghanistan, including holding up these planes shown in satellite images at the mazar-i-sharif airport. >> we've been able to identify a relatively small number of americans who we believe are seeking to depart from mazar-i-sharif with their families. we have been assured again that all american citizens and afghan citizens with valid travel documents will be allowed to leave. >> reporter: secretary of state antony blinken during aston in qatar where afghan evacuees are being processed denied americans are being blocked from leaving. >> we are not aware of anyone being held on an aircraft or any hostage-like situation in mazar-i-sharif. we have to work through the

wall street. investors are weighing disappointing labor market data from last week andurge t covid-19 cases. the dow skidded 269 points. the nasdaq gained 10, and the s&p 500 fell 15. howard university is canceling some classes today for the second day in a row after it was hit with a ransomware attack. the historically black college shut down its network friday after its information technology team detected unusual activity. all online and hybrid undergraduate classes are suspended. the school is working with the fbi in installing additional safety measures to protect the university's data. it's not known who's behind the attack. jeff bezos is reportedly investing in a company aiming to extend human life. mit's technology review says the amazon founder's one of several investors in altos labs. the startup is reportedly working on technology to rejuvenate cells and potentially prolong life. bezos has funded anti-aging
