new plan today to turn the tide in the battle against the coronavirus. his six-point strategy is expected to emphasize increasing vaccination rates, keeping schools safely open, and protecting the economic recovery. so bradley blackburn has details from new york. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this new strategy comes as case numbers continue to grow. the u.s. average nearly 1,500 deaths a day over the last week. the white house says we are still at war with this virus. today president biden is expected to lay out a six-prong strategy to stop the spread of covid-19. >> some of that will be related to access to testing. some will be related to mandates. some will be related to how we ensure kids are protected in schools. >> reporter: u.s. press secretary jen psaki said the president will require new vaccine requirements. >> we have more work to do. we are still at war with the virus. >> reporter: three months ago president biden hoped this

summer would be free from the virus' deadly grip. >> a summer of freedom. a summer of joy. a summer of get-togethers and celebrations. >> reporter: but the delta variant and vaccine hesitancy allowed covid-19 to surge. >> how are you keeping my child safe? resign parents like lindsay harrison will be paying attention. with three school-aged kids, she's concerned about the spike in pediatric cases. 250,000 reported last week. >> we're seeing more kids in the icu needing higher levels of monitoring, intervention. >> reporter: in los angeles, the school board is voting today whether to require eligible students 12 and older to be vaccinated against covid-19 in order to attend school in person. >> that's why there isn't measles and mumps and rubella in our schools because we vaccinate, and we require it. it's a mandate. this is a mandate to save lives. >> reporter: a source familiar with the president's new plan tells cbs news it will include an update on booster shots. and on those boosters, the fda

still hasn't approved a third dose. an advisory panel is supposed to look at the data on the pfizer vaccine on september 17th. that is just three days before the administration had planned to start giving out shots. so they already scaling back some expectations. anne-marie? >> yep, already behind schedule. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you so much. tropical storm mindy made landfall on florida's gulf coast overnight. it could bring up to six inches of rain across the florida panhandle and neighboring regions. the storm is expected to head out to the atlantic ocean later today. hurricane ida's death toll in louisiana has risen to 26. the additional 11 deaths all happened in the city of new orleans between august 30th and monday. officials say nine of the deaths were from excessive heat after the storm cut power to the entire city for days. the remaining two deaths involve carbon monoxide poisoning. >>d thisorning, ther new deo of

planted pipe bombs outside the republican and democratic national committee buildings before the january 6th capitol attack. this video shows the suspect on a park bench near the rnc headquarters on capitol hill. where they placed an explosive device and another several blocks away at the dnc. the bombs were viable, including galvanized pipes, a kitchen timer, and homemade black powder. officials also say the cell phone that the suspect is seen using offers a clue. >> i think it actually says that the potential is there that someone else was on the other end of that text or that phone. now you have two people involved in this, and potentially more. >> the fbi noted the individual was wearing glasses and looking at street signs. an indication experts say they are not from the area. there is a reward of up to $100,000 for any information leading to an arrest. and protective fencing is expected to be installed around

the u.s. capitol again. law enforcement is concerned about potential violence at a rally next saturday. demonstrators intend to show support for those charged for their involvement in the deadly insurrection on january 6th. the "associated press" reported earlier far-right extremist groups including the proud boys and oathkeepers plan to attend. turning to afghanistan, the 13 u.s. service members killed in last month's bombing attack in kabul have been awarded purple hearts. they were helping screen people at the airport when the attack happened. meantime, there is word this morning that the taliban have agreed to allow 200 americans and foreigners in afghanistan to leave the country today charter flights. that's according to a u.s. official. thousands of afghan citizens are still in germany, meanwhile, waiting for flights to the u.s. some republican lawmakers are sounding the alarm about who may be arriving. skyler henry reports from the white house.

>> reporter: secretary of state antony blinken toured hangar five at ramstein air force in germany. the last stop many afghan evacuees will make before moving on to america. >> because of what you've done and because of how you've done it, you have literally saved lives. you have literally changed lives. you've literally changed futures. >> reporter: administration officials say as many as 65,000 afghans are expected to arrive in the u.s. by the end of the month. some republican lawmakers including congressman andy biggs of arizona are concerned about the vetting process. he sent a letter to dhs demanding information saying "we need to ensure that these individuals are being properly vetted and do not pose a risk to our communities." "cbs evening news" anchor norah o'donnell asked alejandro mayorkas why some afghan evacuees on the terrorist watch list are showing up in america. >> so how many people have been removed from the united states for showing up on one of these lists? >> so, our screening and vetting process is going very, very

novak djokovic is one step closer to becoming the first man in 52 years to win all four grand slam tennis tournaments in the same year. he defeated a player from italy in the quarterfinals just after midnight at the u.s. open. djokovic dropped the first set but came back to win the next three. he is also going after the men's record of 21 major championships. a prominent confederate statue was taken down, and a big settlement was reached in the arrest of an elderly woman. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "denver post" reports the city of loveland, colorado, has agreed to pay a $3 million settlement to a 73-year-old woman with dementia after she was violently arrested. karen gardner left a walmart without paying $14 in items last year and began walking home. then-officer austin hopp grabbed her arm and pushed her during

the arrest. she said her shoulder was dislocated. the officer resigned and faces assault charges. "the richmond times dispatch" said the 131-year-old bronze statue of robert e. lee was lifted off its pedestal yesterday and to virginia governor northam ordered the statue removed last year amid the protests surrounding the murder of george floyd in minneapolis. >> we got it done. we're here. a lot of people are happy. at the end of the day, guess what -- it's down. >> the lee statue was the largest confederate statue in the country. other confederate statutes in richmond have also been removed. and "usa today" says the international olympic committee barred north korea from next year's winter olympics in beijing. the move is punishment for north korea skipping this year's summer olympics in tokyo. north korea said it pulled its athletes from the tokyo games

volunteers will have to show proof of vaccination. they will also be required to wear masks. on the cbs "money watch" now, whole foods is letting some customers skip the checkout line, and a movie chain is wooing customers back to theaters. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this morning the labor department's out with its weekly jobless claims report. meantime, stock futures are indicating a lower open as economic sectors struggle to deal with the effects of the coronavirus. now yesterday the dow fell 68 points. the nasdaq dropped 87, and the s&p 500 lost 5. some customers can soon skip the checkout line at whole foods. like amazon go, it's rolling out new technology called just walk out, allowing people to get what they need, no cashier is needed. cameras and sensors will track what's taken off the shelves, and shoppers will see the charges on their amazon account. the software will next year at two whole food, one

living life in peace ♪ john lennon's legendary song and album "imagine" are being remembered across the world 50 years after its release. a lyric from what many people believe is the greatest song of all time was projected on buildings in several cities around the globe including tokyo, berlin, london, and lennon's hometown of liverpool, of course. his widow yoko ono said her late husband would have loved this. saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. the company earth cam is releasing a time-lapse film documenting what's taken place at the world trade center site during this time. the approximately six-minute film shows the rescue, recovery, and rebuilding at ground zero, including never-before-seen footage. more than 13 million photos from more than 100 camera angles captured the transformation of downtown manhattan.

bob odenkirk is back shooting "better call saul" in albuquerque six weeks after having a heart attack and collapsing on set. yesterday he tweeted a photo of himself getting made up to play his character. he said he was back at work and happy to be there. the 58-year-old actor was hospitalized in july. and former new york yankees shortstop derek jeter is one of four new members of the baseball hall of fame. about 20,000 people were at yesterday's induction ceremony in cooperstown, new york. jeter told the crowd there was only one thing in his life that he wanted to be -- the shortstop for the new york yankees. >> and i wanted to prove to you i believe, and you kept pushing me to prove it over and over again. i was always most comfortable on the field. especially at yankee stadium playing in front of you. and i wanted you to be able to count on me. >> jeter played 20 seasons with the yankees, winning five world series. coming up on "cbs mornings,"
