good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. in his most aggressive action yet, president biden announced new covid vaccine mandates that will affect up to 100 million americans. he laid out his strategy yesterday to fight the latest coronavirus surge. it includes requiring all federal workers to get vaccinated or possibly lose their jobs. and businesses with more than 100 employees ensuring its workers are vaccinated or tested weekly. currently the u.s. is averaging more than 140,000 new cases and 1,000 deaths per day. as skyler henry reports, some gop governors are pushing back against the white house plan. >> reporter: the new covid-19 vaccination effort president biden unveiled thursday is his administration's most aggressive yet. >> the bottom line -- we're going to protect vaccinated workers from unvaccinated co-workers. >> reporter: the president's action plan mandates that private sector companies with more than 100 workers require them to be vaccinated or test

for the virus every week. workers at health facilities receiving medicare or medicaid money will also have to be fully vaccinated. >> if you want to do business with the federal government, vaccinate your work force. >> reporter: and all federal and contract workers must get their shots, as well, or face losing their jobs. arkansas governor asa hutchison criticized the approach saying in a statement that federal government mandates on private businesses are not the right answer. among other wide-ranging measures to battle the surging pandemic, president biden said fines will double for airline passengers refusing to wear masks. >> if you break the rules, be prepared to pay. and by the way, show some respect. >> reporter: now with a spike in cases among children and teenagers, the president is urging schools to set up regular testing for staff and students. that comes as the los angeles unified school district voted thursday to mandate covid vaccines for all eligible students. >> it passes -- >> thank you. >> reporter: before the vote, one school board member said

he's old enough to remember when polio crippled some of his classmates. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. tomorrow the nation will mark 20 years since 9/11. ceremonies will be held nationwide to remember the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the terror attacks. president biden will attend events at ground zero, shanksville, pennsylvania, and the pentagon. bradley blackburn is in lower manhattan with more. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. 20 years later, ground zero has a memorial park, a museum, and a gleaming new tower, and there is now a generation that has no personal memory of 9/11. it makes it even more important to listen to the stories of survivors who were right here. 20 years after the september 11th attacks, the world will pause to reflect and remember. but paul conlon lives with the memory every single day.

the deadliest foreign attack on u.s. soil. and this is, of course, more than just a memorial. it is the final resting place for many of those victims. the medical examiner's office houses unidentified remains in a facility right where the twin towers stood. just this week, they identified two more victims. >> wow. bradley blackburn in lower manhattan. thank you so much. so coming up on "cbs mornings," we will talk with former secretary of state hillary clinton. she served as a new york senator during 9/11, and she'll discuss her memories of that day. and breaking overnight, the all-clear was given at an ohio air force base after reports of an active shooter. emergency crews responded to wright-patterson air force base last night located east of dayton. two people reported hearing one gunshot at the base. security forces conducted two sweeps of the facility which is

an 850,000-square-foot facility. they did not find any threats or anyone injured. an investigation, though, is under way. and the justice department is suing texas over its controversial abortion law. it's asking a federal judge to declare the law invalid. the texas rule bans abortions once medical professionals can detect cardiac activity, usually around six weeks, before many women know they're pregnant. the law makes no exceptions for victims of rape, sexual abuse, or incest. attorney general merrick garland said the law is clearly unkuhn and violates the rights of women in the state. >> and this complaint expresses our view about the law and the facts. >> texas governor greg abbott said that he is confident the courts will uphold the law. and now to afghanistan where the taliban agreed to let 200 thtry.ataryeery aftetaking off

it was the first such large-scale departure since the u.s. completed its troop withdrawal over a week ago. ned price, a state department spokesperson, said more americans could have been on the flight but chose to stay. >> some wanted more time to consider it. others wanted to remain with extended family, at least for the time being. others cited medical issues. >> price said the date -- to date, rather, 6,000 americans are home. he said officials remain committed to getting u.s. citizens out of afghanistan safely. and the trial of former theranos founder and ceo elizabeth holmes has been delayed until next week. this comes after a juror disclosed that he had been potentially exposed to covid and was awaiting test results. holmes is facing a dozen counts of wire fraud and conspiracy for biking investors out of money

rare public appearance, and a former presidential candidate has an important reminder. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "twin cities pioneer press" reports amy klobuchar revealed that she was treated for breast cancer. the 61-year-old democrat said that the cancer was detected during a routine mammogram in february. she said that she underwent surgery and completed radiation treatment in may. klobuchar said that she delayed her mammogram due to the pandemic and urged women to get checked. >> in the course of it, i found out that thousands of women have undetected breast cancer right now. and one in three americans are not moving forward with just routine exams and physicals during the pandemic. >> klobuchar said a checkup last month indicated she is doing well. "usa today" says a big cargo ship got stuck in the suez canal and blocked traffic again. the panama flagged "coral

crystal" ran aground forcing other vessels to be redirected to the other lane. tugboats freed the ship, and it resumed its voyage. earlier this year, traffic in the canal was blocked in both directions for six days when the container ship got stuck. that disrupted global shipping. the "associated press" says north korean leader kim jong-un looked thinner and more energetic as he appeared in public to watch a parade during wednesday's event. the 37-year-old kim smiled, waved to the crowd, and greeted children who presented him with flowers. kim's weight loss became noticeable in june when he made his first public appearance in weeks. experts say his weight loss is likely due to efforts to get into better shape rather than a health problem. still ahead, dramatic victory. super bowl champs the tampa bay buccaneers pull off a last-minute drive against the dallas cowboys to kick off the nfl season. n ♪

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the u.s. just recorded its hottest summer ever, beating the previous record set in 1936 by a hair. the government says the average temperature this summer for the contiguous u.s. was 74 degrees fahrenheit. that surpasses the previous record by less than .01 degree. california, nevada, oregon, and utah each reported their warmest summer on record. and officials are blaming the rise in greenhouse gas levels. on the cbs "money watch" now, refusing to wear a mask on airplanes will get you a bigger fine, and why taco bell wants you to mail in your used sauce packets. diane king hall is at the new

york stock exchange. i cannot wait to hear why. >> i know, right? the good morning. wall street logged its fourth consecutive day of losses. investors are growing more concerned about the pandemic's impact on the economy. the dow dropped 151 points. the nasdaq fell 38, and the s&p 500 lost 20. today the tsa will start doubling fines for people who refuse to wear masks on airplanes, trains, and other forms of public transportation. first-time offenders will face a potential fine of up to $1,000. people who break the rules for a second time could face a penalty of up to $3,000. the new rule will remain in effect until at least january 18th. hourly employees at amazon can go to college on the company's dime. the offer is available to 750,000 workers as long as they've been with the company for 90 days. amazon's new program will also fund educational advancement such as high school diplomas and geds. it follows moves by walmart and

olympic gold medal wrestler gable steveson is heading to the wwe in a first of its kind deal. world wrestling entertainment announced that it has signed him to a multiyear deal that allows him to attend the university of minnesota for his senior year. he will try and defend his college heavyweight wrestling title. it is the wwe's first so-called nil deal where college athletes can earn money for their name, image, and likeness without violating ncaa rules. and the mtv music awards are back with a live audience. doja cat will host and perform at the barclays center in brooklyn. she's up for five awards including video and artist of the year. justin bieber will perform at the vmas for the first time in six years. he racked up a leading seven nominations, including video and artist of the year. so coming up on "cbs mornings," singer kacey musgraves who will also be

elise preston spoke with the widow of a new york city firefighter who waa hero, a husband, and father. one of the things i miss the most is just laying in bed with my head on his shoulder, just talking away. >> reporter: ann's husband was a new york city firefighter. one of the 343 fdny responders who died in the attack on the world trade center. >> now when i look at these names, i -- i know their family members. >> reporter: for bruce van hine, being a firefighter was a childhood dream. >> squad 41 lost everyone on duty that day. they lost all six firefighters. they went into building two and got pretty high up and started to bring civilians down, and then they were killed in the collapse. >> reporter: when was the last time you spoke to bruce? >> the last time i saw bruce was sunday, september 9th. he said, "i'm blessed," and i said, "why?"

he said, "because i'm married to miss ann." >> reporter: gives more than 500 tours where bruce died a hero. the one day she never visits the site is the september 11th anniversary. >> i don't know that i can take on the collective grief of 3,000 people. >> reporter: 20 years ago, joan lived just a block west of the towers. she watched the attacks from her office window. >> i saw both towers get struck by the planes. i was never able to make it back home. >> reporter: as a volunteer for the tribute museum, she shares stories of both the horrors and humanity of the day. >> we had over 500,000 people come here after 9/11 with only one objective -- they wanted to help. >> reporter: that support from both loved ones and strangers has helped van hine carry on as she honors her husband's memory and makes sure we never forget. elise preston, cbs news, new
