schoolteacher. she raised my younger sister and myself with a lot o love. >> we had a lot of aspirational energy. >> reporter: there were rules, different rules for blacks. >> a single movie theater that was kind of like unwritten rules that blacks go on a certain night and whites go on a different night. >> reporter: he came to comedy late. after college, he tried his hands in broadcast. >> hey, i didn't order any pizzas. i was really good at like getting people into little parts for prom. those were my moves.

that's what people love about me. oh man, i am going to need this job for a week. you got it. so it's prom done, right? >> you were good for the customers but not for cars. >> i think that's why they never bother to bring me back for any reason. >> reporter: he's always funny but he didn't try stand-up comedy until mid-20s. right off the gates he won $500. cedric kyle didn't sound right. where did cedric, entertainer come in? >> i performed as cedric the cheerio. i never want to do my former name. call me an entertainer. so you introduce me cedric the
