> morng. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning with the debate over covid booster shots. this morning an fda committee will meet on whether americans need a third vaccine dose. currently only people with weakened immune systems can get a t third shot of the pfizer vaccine. a panel of experts will help decide if it should be available to the general public. bradley blackburn has the latest from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. before when these committees have met they have essentially been rubberstamps. that is likely not the case today. there is real disagreement over the scientific evidence for these booster shots. today the fda's vaccine advisory committee is expected to vote on whether to recommend a third dose of the pfizer vaccine for people 16 and older. >> i have an auto immune condition. >> reporter: roy johnson got his last month when the fda first

approved boosters for the immune compromised. >> when it was made available i thought i may as well go ahead and get the third shot. >> reporter: nearly two million americans have gotten a third dose. a recent israeli study found the extra shot significantly reduces the risk of severe illness. in an article in "the lancet" a group of scientists said current evidence does not show a need for widespread use. >> the consensus will be at some point just like we have to get repeat flu vaccines every year -- >> reporter: dr. razahi says regardless of the fda's decision it's most important for the unvaccinated to get protected. >> don't get distracted with boosters versus additional doses, it's just -- go get the vaccine. go get your first dose. it's not too late. >> reporter: idaho is among the several states where the unvaccinated are responsible for soaring hospitalizations. >> our icus are not only full, they're overflowing. the vast majority of our patients in our intensive care units are covid positive.

98% of them are unvaccinated. >> reporter: just 53% of adults in idaho are fully vaccinated compared to 65% of adults nationwide. and some idaho hospitals have now switched to a crisis standard of care. they transferring patients to hospitals out of state, anne-marie, because they can't handle the surge. >> wow. listen, today's vote is actually specifically about pfizer booster shot. what about moderna? >> reporter: moderna has submitted its data on boosters to the fda. the company says it shows that there is a higher rate of infection among people who have had the vaccine for more than a year. so moderna argues a third booster dose will be needed, but we'll have to see if health officials agree. anne-marie? >> yep. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you very much. the nation's capitol is bracing for a possibly violent demonstration tomorrow. the fencing is back up at the u. col o0 people are

te the justice for j6 y. theyrt fharged withn january 6t. now there's also fencing at the supreme court. as jeff pegues reports, new threats showed up on social media ahead of the demonstration. >> reporter: with eight-foot-high fencing now surrounding the capitol, cbs news has learned that capitol police aren't just gearing up for saturday's rally, they're concerned about the day before, too. the fbi has flagged social media posts which suggest storming the capitol on friday, and the new homeland security bulletin is warning of lone offenders or small groups that could spark violence. rally organizer matt brainard, a former trump campaign staffer, says the event, which will include calls for the imprisoned january 6th rioters to be released, will be peaceful. >> the capitol police know that we are no threat. this to deter people from attending.

>> reporter: the former president who critics say incited the january 6th riotng persecuted unfairly. but those mobs of people caused more than $1 million in damage, injured more than 100 police officers, and led to five deaths. the security presence this time around looks much different. the national guard has been requested. nearby police departments are deploying. and new security cameras have been installed. >> we have to be overprepared. if we have to deal for the worst case scenario and hope for the best case scenario. >> reporter: the best case scenario is that all this fencing and the security cameras will guard against the potential for violence out here. officials say they're expecting about 700 people, but that's a number that could go up depending on the weather. and they're not expecting rain on saturday. they're expecting clear skies. jeff pegues, cbs news,

washington. newly released police video may offer some clues in the case of a woman who vanished during a cross-country trip with her fiance. the body cam footage shows gabrielle petito and brian laundrie getting pulled over in utah after their van was seen speeding on august 12th and hitting a curb. an officer asked petito, who was reported missing by her family a month later, to get out of the van and questioned why she was crying. >> we've been fighting all morning. and -- he wouldn't let me in the car before. >> why wouldn't he let you in the car? because of your -- >> told me to calm down. >> in the footage, laundrie told police he got scratches on his face after petito, quote, got him with her cell phone when she tried to take the keys to the van. he's currently a person of interest and is not cooperating with police. petito's last-known whereabouts is in grand tee ton national park in wyoming. a prominent south arolina

lawyer turned himself in to police after he allegedly hired a hit man to kill him in a botched insurance fraud scheme. alex murdoch appeared in court yesterday and was released back to a drug rehab facility for an opioid addiction. he is facing several charges including conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and filing a false police report. the 53-year-old is accused of hiring curtis smith to shoot him in the head with hopes of leaving a $10 million life insurance policy to his older son. this comes after the mysterious deaths of his wife maggie and 22-year-old son paul. the paul were both gunned down on the family's property in june. those murders remain unsolved. so coming up, thousands of refugees from afghanistan are being settled in the u.s. we will tell you which states are welcoming them. and a new landmark. we show you plans for a stunning new highrise building in hollywood that includes its own tram. this is the "cbs morning news." news."

did you just move here? yeah! cool! dramatic new footage from north korea shows the country launching ballistic missiles from a train for the first time. watch as a green missile rises on a column of smoke and flames from the roof of a train. north korea said the missiles flew about 500 miles in the air before striking a target in the sea off the country's east coast. the missiles can be moved easily through north korea making them harder to detect. a new study says forget about 10,000 steps for a longer life, and which state is welcoming the most afghan refugees. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports states across the country are learning how many afghan evacuees are coming their way. governors and state refugee coordinators were told wednesday by the biden administration where the first group of nearly

37,000 afghan evacuees will be settling. california is projected to take 5,200 people. the most of any other state, alabama and mississippi are each slated to welcome just ten. several other states are not expected to resettle anyone. the "los angeles times" reports developers are proposing a hollywood office tower with a bold sculptural design. officials filed an application with the city yesterday to build a $500 million highrise on sunset boulevard in the heart of hollywood called the star. the proposed office tower would be a glass building with open garden levels and a tram to a rooftop restaurant. >> it's important for an employee during the long workday to be able to go outside, enjoy los angeles, the phenomenal weather, the sun. >> the developers say its open air design will initiate energy

on the cbs "money watch," social security recipients could get their biggest cost of living increase in decades. and why a new samuel adams beer is actually illegal in more than a dozen states. diane king hall has those stories and more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and many friday, anne-marie. stock futures are indicating a mixed open after a mixed bag of economic data including better than expected retail sales offset by an increase in weekly jobless claims. the three major indices ultimately ended mixed yesterday. the dow slid 63 points. the nasdaq gained 20, while the s&p 500 lost 6. people on social security could get a big bump next year. the senior citizen league said recipients will likely receive a 6% increase in their checks, the largest increase in 40 years. it would add about $93 per month in payments. the reasfl -- a beof t coronavirus. the social security

administration is expected to announce the cost of living adjustment for 2022 next month. ford is ramping up production of its first-ever electric truck. the automaker announced it will boost capacity of the f-150 lightning to 80,000 per year because of strong demand. it plans to invest $250 million and add hundreds of jobs across three facilities in michigan. the lightning, which goes on sale next spring, already has 150,000 reservations. and samuel adams is ready to release a beer so strong it's illegal in 15 states. according to "usa today," the 2021 release of utopias will hit shelves october 11th in select beer, wine, and liquor stores. it has 28% alcohol by volume with a $240 price tag for a 24-ounce bottle. the company describes the beer as, quote, extreme and aged more than 20 years in wood own wooden bourbon casks.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the untry. elton john is pushing back european dates on his world tour until 2023. the 74-year-old singer said that he will undergo surgery for a recent hip injury. he still plans on starting the u.s. portion of the tour in january in new orleans. and so far, so good for four space tourists who are currently orbiting earth. the crew of "inspiration 4" launched from the kennedy space center wednesday night. it was the first-ever mission of just civilians on board with no astronauts. spacex founder elon musk tweeted yesterday that he spoke with the crew and all is well. the flight is also raising money

for st. jude children's research hospital in memphis with a goal of $200 million. and patients got to speak with the crew live yesterday afternoon. in a tweet, st. jude's hospital said that they asked questions that we all want to know like are there cows on the moon? the crew will return to earth tomorrow. sony is answering some questions about the future of the game show "jeopardy!". the production company announced mayim bialik and ken jennings will split hosting duties for the remainder of the season which runs through the end of the year. bialik's episodes start monday through november 5th. after that they will share duties based on their schedules. right now episodes of michael richards are airing because he taped a week's worth of programs before he stepped down as host and executive producer due to disparaging comments made in the past. and football fans either love him or hate him, but tom brady thinks he can continue to play in the nfl for another six years.
