it's monday, september 20th, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." a tragic discovery in the search for gabrielle petito. a body is found in wyoming. now authorities want to know where is her fiance. mass expulsion. the u.s. begins sending back haitians who gathered at the texas border. how plans to move everyone out by the end of the week. the best in television. the biggest stars on the small screen are honored at the emmy awards. why the night belonged to popular streaming services. good morning. i'm diane king hall in for anne-marie green. we begin with a grim discovery in the search for 22-year-old

gabrielle petito. she vanished during a cross-country trip with her fiance. authorities say a body found yesterday in wyoming is believed to be petito. they're now looking for her partner, brian laundrie, who was last seen last tuesday. he's been named a person of iterest and has not cooperated with authorities. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so many volunteers were joining in that search to try to help to find gabby. the body was discovered by law enforcement agents who spent all weekend searching camp sites near grand teton national park. her family had hoped to find gabby alive. still, they say they are grateful to those agents for bringing her home. the search for gabrielle petito appears to have come to a tragic end. a body matching the description of the missing woman was found by investigators yesterday at a campsite in wyoming. >> full forensic identification has not been completed to confirm 100% that we found

gabby. but her family has been notified of this discovery. the cause of death has not been determined at this time. >> reporter: just after the news broke of the remains being found, petito's father, joe, shared a picture of gabby on twitter with a broken heart and the words "she touched the world." the 22-year-old's family had not heard from her since late last month when she contacted them from grand teton national park. >> we continue to seek information from anyone who utilized the spread creek dispersed camping area between august 27th and 30th. >> reporter: in july petito set out on a cross-country drive with her fiancee, brian laundrie. on august 12th, a utah police officer pulled their van over. the body cam video shows the couple in the middle of an emotional argument. >> we've been fighting all morning. and he wouldn't let me in the car before. >> reporter: according to police, laundrie was alone when he arrived at his parents' home in florida on september 1st. he was named a person of interest but refused to speak to

detectives before going missing last week. >> our goal is to locate him and bring him back to northport. >> reporter: laundrie's family believes he's inside the carlton reserve, a 24,000-acre wildfire refuge in sarasota county. his family members finally spoke with investigators in detail on friday when they reported his disappearance. more than 50 law enforcement officers have been deployed to the carlton reserve to search for him, and at this point laundrie is still not a criminal suspect. >> such a heartbreaking situation. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. the u.s. has started flying haitians camped at a texas border town back to their hometown. -- homeland. more than 300 of them arrived in port-au-prince yesterday. many haitians had small children as they got off the plane and boarded a bus. the flights are expected to continue all week long. now last week, the u.s. closed the entry point to del rio after

thousands of migrants converged under a bridge. the department of homeland security urged migrants not to make the dangerous journey to the u.s. christina ruffini has more. >> reporter: instead of crossing the international bridge that connects acuna, mexico, to del rio, texas, an estimated 12,000 migrants, many of them haitians, are camped out under it. >> we now have one-third of the population of the city of del rio, texas, in a confined space. >> reporter: 400 border agents are being sent to help according to the department of homeland security which says it will accelerate the pace and increase the capacity of removal flights to haiti and other destinations. >> had is just at this point overwhelming for the resources that we have on hand. >> reporter: the u.s. has seen a surge in migrants at the southern border from countries like honduras, ecuador, and guatemala. now haitians, many of whom moved to south and central america after the devastating earthquake in 2010, are also heading north.

on friday, texas governor greg abbott added nearly $2 billion to his state's border security budget. >> it is the federal government's job to secure our border, but the biden administration has failed to do its job. >> that was christina ruffini reporting. the u.s. plans to begin seven expulsion flights daily starting wednesday. they're taking off from san antonio but authorities may add el paso, as well. a military jet crashed in a texas neighborhood during a routine training flight. navy officials said both pilots ejected before the plane crashed yesterday near fort worth. three homes were damaged. one of the pilots was electrocuted after being caught in power lines but survived. the other was found in a wooded area. one witness described the scene. >> i saw smoke in the treeline behind us. there was actually smoke, like black smoke. i didn't see the crash myself. i heard the explosion. >> three people in the neighborhood suffered minor injuries.

the instructor pilot was in stable condition. the student pilot was in serious condition. the jet was assigned to naval air station kingsville south of lake worth. an advisory committee of the cdc is set to meet on wednesday to debate who should get covid booster shots. on friday, an fda panel recommended a third dose of the pfizer vaccine only for people over the age of 65, and those with weakened immune systems. it's not available yet for the general public. meantime, dr. anthony fauci talked about people who received the moderna and johnson & johnson vaccines. he appeared on "meet the press" saying the data is just weeks away. >> we're working on that right now to get the data to the fda so they can examine it and make a determination about the boosters for those people. they're not being left behind by any means. >> dr. fauci also said more data may also show a broader need for booster shots across the general u.s. population. ahead on "cbs mornings,"

we'll talk with former fda commissioner dr. scott gottlieb about his new book, and he'll weigh in on booster shot recommendations. the united nations general assembly kicks off today in new york city. leaders from more than 100 nations will convene this week. they're set to address everything from the covid-19 pandemic, climate change, to the crisis in afghanistan. last year's meeting was virtual due to the pandemic. this week the u.n. says it's relying on the honor system when it comes to covid vaccinations. president biden addresses the assembly tomorrow. coming up, covid diagnosis. comedian chris rock reveals he has the coronavirus. his message for people who are not vaccinated. and fans can believe. chris rock says he's contracted a breakthrough case of covid-19. the 56-year-old comedian shared the news on twitter yesterday. he wrote, "trust me, you don't want this. get vaccinated." in may he revealed that he had been vaccinated. meantime, it was a big night for the royals and streaming services at the 73rd annual emmy awards. anthony pura has the big winners from los angeles. "the crown." >> reporter: it was better than a royal flush for "the crown" at the 73rd emmy awards. the series was named best drama series and stars olivia coleman and josh o'connor, one for their portrayals of queen elizabeth ii and prince charles. >> i'd have put money on that not happening. >> reporter: "the crown" won best supporting actor and actress, writing and directing awards. another netflix queen reigned supreme. "the queen's gambit" was named outstanding limited series. >> this award is for the fans

investors will be keeping their eyes peeled on this week's federal reserve meeting. that's when the central bank may offer insight on the timing of the tapering of its pandemic-era purchase asset program. meantime, the dow slid 166 points on friday. the nasdaq fell 137 points, and the s&p 500 lost 40 points. up to 30 million vehicles built by two dozen automakers will be reportedly under investigation by u.s. officials. "reuters" says the national highway traffic safety administration opened an engineering analysis on cars from the model years 2001 to 2019. some of the automakers include honda, ford, nissan, toyota, tesla, and bmw. the investigation is centered around takata airbag inflaters installed when they were manufactured along with some used in prior recall repairs. elon musk is paying it forward. the spacex ceo pushed the recent

"inspiration 4" spaceflight mission past its fundraising goal when he said he would donate $50 million to u.s. jude. children's hospital. it aimed to raise $2 million for the children's organization. the also-civilian spaceflight, the first of its kind, launched on wednesday and came back to earth on saturday. and boston's famous skinny house has a new owner. the house in the city's north end hit the market in august and closed last thursday for a little over $1.2 million. the four-story home was built in 1862 and is more than 1,100 square feet and is about ten-feet wide at its widest point. it features two bedrooms, one bath, a private deck, and a view of boston harbor. now there is no front door. residents enter through a side door. diane, even if you were looking for a front door, if you're looking for this house, you beter slow down because you'll miss it. >> that's right. it's true. and the back story to this house

banning abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy in an op-ed in the "the "washington post." dr. alan braid, a san antonio violation, said he provided an abortion to a woman in her first trimester. but beyond the new limit. he said he acted, quote, because he had a duty of care to this patient and because she has a fundamental right to receive this care. he added that he was fully aware there could be legal consequences. the "associated press" says california firefighters are scrambling to protect a grove of giant ancient sequoia trees. yesterday flames reached one grove where the trail of 100 giant sequoias is a national monument. firefighters battle to keep the blaze from driving further into another grove of 2,000 sequoias. that's where the base of the world's largest tree known as the general sherman and other trees have been wrapped in protective foil. >> it's fairly unusual to use structure wrap to protect natural resources, but that is a good indicator of how precious
