criminals. >> reporter: kathy stokes is the director of fraud prevention programs at aarp. >> in the process they are asking for your medicare number. >> reporter: they may sell that number to other criminals or use it to file fraudulent claims. authorities in ohio say that residents there are getting a different fake medicare call. >> they will have the appropriate medicare number and the name to go with it and they are telling them they need a new card. >> reporter: the federal trade commission are saying that the scammers are trying to collect personal information like in this call. >> i'm from medicare, we are sending out the new cards and i need to confirm your billing information to keep your coverage active. >> reporter: medicare never calls looking for money or offering test kits. >> it's not how it works. know it's a scam. your doctor has to prescribe medical equipment for surgeries or test kits, and without that
