hosting a virtual coronavirus summit of world leaders this morning. it's part of his latest push for global cooperation. in his first address before the u.n. general assembly yesterday, he urged unity on covid and climate change. he stressed america is ready to reengage with other countries following strained tensions in the past. bradley blackburn is in new york with more. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president stayed at the u.n. just a short time yesterday due to coronavirus concerns, but he is focused on diplomacy. he has one-on-one meetings scheduled with world leaders this week, and this morning hosting that summit on the globe's biggest challenge -- the pandemic. president biden called for cooperation during his address yesterday at the u.n. general assembly. part of his push to re-establish the u.s. as a leader on the world stage. >> i stand here today for the first time in 20 years with the united states not at war. we've turned the page. we're opening a new era of relentless diplomacy. >> reporter: as part of that new

era, the president urged other wealthy nations to step up in the fight against the coronavirus. >> we need to act now to get shots in arms as fast as possible and expand access to oxygen, tests, treatments, to save lives around the world. >> reporter: after the speech, the president returned to washington for a sit-down with british prime minister boris johnson. >> it's fantastic to see the united states really stepping up and showing a lead, a real, real lead. >> reporter: johnson also met with vice president kamala harris on tuesday. today she and the president will host a virtual pandemic summit from the white house. the summit has an ambitious goal to develop a plan to vaccinate at least 70% of the world's population against covid-19. >> bombs and bullets cannot defend against covid-19 or future variants. to fight this virus we need a collective act of science and political will.

>> reporter: the coronavirus has claimed more than 4.7 million lives around the globe, including over 678,000 in the u.s. both the u.s. and china also made promises yesterday about combating climate change. president biden said the u.s. will double funds by 2024 to help developing nations tackle climate change, and china's leader promised they will not be build any new coal-fired power plants abroad. >> bradley blackburn in new york. our thanks to you. there are breaking developments from the texas border. thousands of haitian migrants have reportedly been released into the u.s. the "associated press" says u.s. officials have freed haitians on a, quote, very large scale in recent days. the move would undercut the white house effort to expel them back to their homeland. the u.s. government took action against border patrol agents who were on horseback, appearing to intimidate migrants. dhs secretary alejandro mayorkas said the agents at the center of the

utsts. as for migrants stuck at the border, they face a tough choice -- cross back into mexico or fly back to haiti where some have not lived in years. manuel bojorquez reports. >> reporter: the flashpoint this makeshift camp in del rio, texas, between a mass deportation effort and haitians fleeing back to mexico. fewer than 10,000 migrants now remain at the camp. to escape deportation, some were forced to cross the chest-high refer holding their children above their heads. even though this stretch of the rio grande is shallower, it is still dangerous. and here you have at least one family crossing with two small children trying to get back to the u.s. for processing. on the other side of the border, mexico is also cracking down. authorities took this man and child into custody. here a migrant is kicked in the head by mexican immigration agents. and more migrants may be on the way.

as many as 20,000, many of them haitian, remain bottlenecked in colombia awaiting their chance to continue their journey to the u.s. gregorio gianpierre arrived with his wife and child. he crossed to mexico looking for food for them. you heard about the deportation, what do you think? why do that? [ speaking foreign language ] do you have anything in haiti? >> no, no. >> reporter: the mass migration of haitians to the u.s. has been years in the making. many moved to central and south america after the 2010 earthquake in haiti. but poor economic conditions and false information have them making the journey to the u.s. border. three years ago i left haiti, i sold my lands to go to chile. we find out biden said we could enter so we entered. rumors of asylum in the u.s. were not true. they now across to the mexican side for food to bring back to the campsite. with officials in mexico also limiting their movements, they're essentially stuck with

their greatest fear -- deportation -- quickly becoming a reality. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, mexico. there are new details in the case of gabby petito, the woman who vanished during a cross-country trip with her fiance. a coroner confirmed the human remains found in a wyoming park are those of the 22-year-old. officials determined petito was determined to be a homicide victim, but an official cause of death has not been released. meantime, the search for her fiance, brian laundrie, is intensifying. authorities are resuming their search at a swampy florida preserve to look for him. >> terrain is very difficult. essentially 75% of it's under water. and other areas that are dry we're trying to clear. >> laundrie, named a person of interest, told his family he was going on a hike last week and has not been seen since. this morning, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake rocked melbourne,

australia. one tv station was live on the air for the morning show when the studio started to shake lightly. officials say there were no reports of any serious injuries. the earthquake damaged buildings along chappelle street in melbourne. debris was spotted on the street. tribute are pouring in for two people who made their mark in the entertainment world. actor willie garson died. he was known for playing stanford on "sex and the city" series and movies. a cause has not been released. co-star cynthia nixon said, "he was endlessly funny on screen and in real life." willie garson was 57 years old. ♪ meantime, legendary r&b singer sarah dash also died. she co-founded the all-female singing group labelle with patti labelle. the group was best know for their 1974 hit "lady marmalade." no cause of death has been

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand". the new orleans "times-picayune" reports a portion of the superdome roof caught fire. officials say a pressure washer being used to clean the roof yesterday started the fire. one worker was taken to the hospital with minor burns. employees inside the superdome were evacuated. the stadium is home to the new orleans saints who have been practicing in texas after hurricane ida hit. they're scheduled to return to the superdome for a game on october 3rd. the "associated press" says the afghanistan girls national soccer team was given asylum in portugal. the girls and their families arrived in lisbon on sunday. they had been desperately trying to leave since u.s. forces withdrew from afghanistan last month. they were fearful of what life might be like under taliban rule. >> they're extremely thankful. they don't know what to say. again, they can't fathom that they're out of afghanistan. they're still in a state of shock and can't believe it.

on the cbs "money watch," two major airlines face an antitrust suit, and there's a pint-sized version of james bond's favorite car. elise preston is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, elise. >> reporter: good morning, diane. investors will be anxiously waiting to hear from fed chair jerome powell this afternoon after the fed wraps up a two-day meeting. yesterday stocks ended mixed after a volatile session. te dow fell 50 points, the nasdaq gained 32 points, and the s&p 500 lost 3 points. the justice department found a lawsuit to stop a partnership between american airlines and jetblue. last year the airliners announced they would start to coordinate flights in the northeast and have begun to do so. government antitrust lawyers said the move will reduce competition and lead to higher fares. american and jetblue says there is no evidence of that, and they're vowing to fight the lawsuit. mcdonald's is looking to

phase out those plastic toys in kids' happy meals worldwide by 2025. the fast food chain says it's working with toy companies to develop new ideas like board games with plant based or recycled pieces. mcdonald's is also exploring used recycled plastic toys to make new restaurant trays. the company says its new goal will reduce its virgin plastic use by 90% compared to 2018 levels. and now kids can own a mini aston martin. the little car company created a replica of the classic car to celebrate the release of the upcoming james bond movie "no time to die." the battery-powered vehicle is two-thirds the size of the real car. features include toy machine guns that come out of the front as the headlights retract. it's also large enough for adults to go for a spin. the price -- $120,000. diane, there's only 125 of these so-called toys being made.
