vaccine. overnight the director of the cdc approved pfizer's booster shot for millions of americans. rochelle walensky signed off on recommendations made by a panel of advisers. it offers a new round of protection against a virus that's killed more than 684,000 americans. here's who is eligible for a third dose -- people over the age of 65, nursing home residents, and people ages 18 to 64 with underlying medical conditions. walensky added a recommendation saying people over 18 who have a job where they might be exposed, for example health care workers, can get a booster, as well. you have to wait six months from your last pfizer dose. health officials are still working on booster data for moderna and johnson & johnson vaccines. now to a mass shooting at a tennessee grocery store where a gunman killed one person and wounded at least a dozen others. it happened at a kroger store just outside the memphis yesterday afternoon.

police say the shooter took his own life. law enforcement sources tell cbs news he may have been a disgruntled employee. bradley blackburn has the latest on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: diane, good morning. this story's in an upscale suburb of memphis. the police chief says it's the most horrific thing to happen in the town. we're hearing from witnesses who were right there when the shooting began. it was just before 1:30 in the afternoon when the first shots rang out inside a kroger supermarket in collierville, tennessee. >> active shooter at the kroger. >> reporter: a young man entered the store and began firing. >> he comes right behind us and starts shooting. and he kept on shooting and shooting and shooting. >> reporter: employees ran to the back of the store to hide, but the gunman seemed to follow them. >> he came through the receiving department, through the back of the store, by a break room. he went through the back and came through the back of the receiving department. and one of my co-workers got shot in the head.

and a customer got shot in the stomach and an arm. >> reporter: officers found the gunman's body in the rear of the store dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> we found people hiding in freezers and in locked offices. you know, they were doing what they h had been trained to do - run, hide, fight. >> reporter: this was the second mass shooting at a u.s. supermarket this year. in march, ten people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a king super in boulder, colorado. and the fbi has joined the investigation in tennessee helping to process evidence from a very large crime scene. the gun violence archive says there have been more than 500 mass shootings already this year. >> tough to hear. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. the house committee investigating the january 6th capitol attack has issued its first round of subpoenas. among those subpoenaed, mark meadows, steven bannon, dan scovino, and cash patel, all in contact with former contact president trump before and

during the capitol riot. the committee says it's investigating the facts, circumstances, and causes of the attack. epositions nt mont government could shut down and default on its debt. the double whammy could wipe out six million jobs here in the u.s. nikole killion reports from washington, d.c. >> reporter: the federal government in limbo one week before funding is due to run out. >> a shutdown is inconceivable, abhorrent, repugnant. >> reporter: the white house officially put federal agencies on notice warning it is preparing for any contingency. the 2019 shutdown lasted 35 days and cost the economy $11 billion. but a shutdown now during a pandemic could impact the cdc and nih. >> we'll keep government open. >> reporter: congressional democrats and republicans remain

deadlocked over the spending measure which includes aid for hurricane ida and afghan refugees. but the real disagreement is over a provision to suspend the debt limit so the government can keep paying its bills which so far republicans are refusing to do. is t there anything that can change your mind? >> i'm not going to increase a debt limit to spend another $5 trillion in the next month. >> reporter: the senate is expected to vote on the government funding bill in the coming days, but there's not a lot of hope it will pass given the current divide which doesn't leave congress much time to find a fix. nikole killion, cbs news, capitol hill. meanwhile, a federal arrest warrant has been issued for the fiance of gabby petito, the 22-year-old whose body was found in a wyoming national park. the indictment accuses brian laundrie of unauthorized use of a debit card and several other accounts, spending more than $1,000. it allegedly happened around the time of petito's disappearance and does not say who the card belongs to.

meantime, investigators rib out again today searching for laundrie at a florida nature preserve. he's been missing for more than a week after returning home to florida on september 1st without petito. the city of moab, utah, is launching an investigation into its police department's hang laun ian offic concl i report it was not domestic assault but more of a mental health crisis. this morning there is new fallout over the expulsion of haitian migrants at the texas border. daniel foot, the special envoy to haiti, has quit. he's protesting the, quote, inhumane, counterproductive decision by the u.s. to deport a large number of haitian refugees. the biden administration temporarily suspended the use of mounted horse patrols near the border. the decision comes as footage surfaced showing some agents charging at migrants with some witnesses saying officers even swung horse reins near their faces.

jurors are jurors are expected to begin deliberations today in the federal trial of r. kelly. the 54-year-old r&b star faces racketeering charges related to alleged illegal sexual activity involving women and underage teens. during yesterday's closing arguments, kelly's attorney compared the singer to dr. martin luther king jr., invoking one of his speeches. kelly faces decades in prison if convicted.

he's also been charged with sex crimes in illinois and minnesota. why a spacex crew member is under quarantine, and there's a new development in a deadly police custody case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the rochester democrat and chronicle" reports only one city police officer will face departmental charges in the death of daniel prude. the 41-year-old black man died of asphyxiation last year. officers restrained him by putting a hood over his head and held him down with his head against the pavement during a mental health episode. the police department says one of the seven suspended officers, mark vaughn, has been served with departmental charges. it did not reveal what the exact charges are. none of the officers face criminal charges. "reuters" says the billionaire commander of the first all-civilian crew to orbit the earth is under quarantine because his family tested positive for covid-19. jared isaacman and three other private citizens returned to
