started between the homes but eventually both homes caught on fire and homes across the street were threatened as well but firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading and the cause is still under investigation but neighbors have a theory. >> i'm pretty sure the rv on the neighbors side top fire and from the rv on their side i'm pretty sure it pursed push the fire. >> there was another fire overnight just before 1:00 am on st. john street you can see the flames engulfing the home police were seen taking a person into custody and it may have been a person who set the home on fire. we will bring any updates as we get them. members of the family are sharing their story after fighting to escape afghanistan. as betty yu reports the family was trapped and faced violence but did not give up. atho stuck in afghanistan and agues tonight they are sharing their

the marine layer and by the time we have gotten to 1:00 in the afternoon in the sunshine bay area wide with the exception of the great coast. as far as the smoke is concerned, when major offender would be the windy fire, all the smoke just keeps getting caught in the pattern that wants to pull a lot of it off the coast and drag it to the bay area. by tomorrow whatever smoke we are pulling and will start getting pushed to the south and away from us because they are is an approaching storm. you can see right there, beautifully outlined. we play that forward into monday and by the time we've gotten to monday morning see the showers extending off the coast. watch the rain try to hold together as a comes into the bay area and it's great news either way we will see reasonable rain for the mountains on the north coast and for the north sierra and that was dutiful to watch but in terms of where will rain

where you could measure, not a whole lot here. maybe one inch at crescent city and the rain falling here in the northern sierra is actually good news and that is one of the primary areas that has burned the most in the last few years and could potentially burn again. half an inch of rain on the landscape there and that is a huge victory. back here at home we need some rain on the hills and if we watch this it is monday afternoon with a little bit of rain approaching and a few light showers through sonoma and it pretty much dissolves and disappears as we go through the remainder of the day. monday, cloudy. you may get a drop of rain but not much that would be measurable. temperatures today in the upper 70s, upper 70s for the inland east bay, 60s and mid-70s for much of the immediate bay. in the seven-day forecast, san francisco, oakland and san jose up first and there is the increasing clouds for monday to tuesday and then we warm up

into the low 80s by the time we get to thursday and friday. the seven-day forecast for the inland valleys of the east bay, warming back up into the upper 80s by thursday and friday of next week and that is as warm as it has to get 80s would be average and that is the first time we've had a seven-day forecast stretching across for the inland valleys of the east bay. we have some rain, cleaner air and temperatures that are going to stay pretty nice for early and mid-september. when i look at the temperatures for the first half of the week it seems like fall has arrived and it gets a little hotter. >> and we get a big fall assist with the system because in addition to bringing light rain and clearing out the air it is bringing in very fall like butchers. happening today, in the sacramento area at the event was canceled but on saturday

welcome back. thank you so much for joining us. i'm devin fehely . let's start this high-power with a quick check of the weather. a great start today. not only in the immediate bay area baha'i clouds of extended over part of the bay area. not a big impact on temperatures. if you take a look at the current that is pretty much the theme everywhere you go. air quality today, another advisory although most sensors are reporting good air quality bay area wide. as we take a look ahead to the forecast for the remainder of today, those numbers are below average. we are only going to the upper 70s for the inland valleys of the east bay today. a small chance of rain tomorrow for the north bay we will look at that in just a few minutes. later today the funeral

gabby petito on long island, authorities are still searching for her fiancc after the fbi issued an arrest warrant for him. michael george gives us a look at vigils held this weekend ahead of the funeral today. >> mourners in florida are paying their respects in the eve of gabby petito's funeral and miles away the manhunt for her fiancc home in a massive wildlife reserve. gabby petito's body was found nearly a week ago in a wyoming national park and the coroner ruled the death a homicide but have not said how she died. she went missing on a cross- country road trip with brian laundrie. >> we have been fighting this morning. >> she appeared to be interests during a traffic stop that followed this 911 call. >> the gentleman was slapping the girl. we stop and they ran up and

time surfing competition was going on nearby and the man shot is in the hospital. a cruise ship that was the face of the covid disaster has finally taken to the seas again. we all remember these images from march of 2020 with the covid outbreak forcing the cruise ship to anchor off of san francisco bay with thousands of people stranded on board. over 3000 passengers disembarked to quarantine at travis air force base. 120 people would ultimately test positive and seven of them died. last night the ship sets sail from the port of la for the first time in 18 months. the boarding looked much different as masked passengers were required to show proof of vaccination and a negative covid test within two days before the ship can hold 2600 people but is only carrying 60%

to 70%. keyless entry to the cabin door, touchless payment and all sorts of services, masks are required in the more dense locations but of course not while eating or drinking. >> the grand princess is a second cruise ship to says stale . it launched from the port of long beach last month. last march the grand princess became an early image of the devastation of the pandemic. today marks the final day for the public to weigh in on the plan to begin charging fees at national park sites. john ramos explains how, why and what people think about it. >> the golden gate national recreation area is part of the park system built for the benefit of the people but now it looks like the people who use the parks are going to be called upon to help contribute.

>> this is national public lands day, a day when all national parks are free to visit. baker beach with a spectacular view of the golden gate bridge is always free but it may not be true for much longer for those who drive here. they want to begin charging three dollars per hour up to $10 per day to park which is not going over so well for those that are used to it being free. >> some people are not able to afford even coming out and that would be another criteria where they will not be able to come and enjoy it. >> the fees will be charged at baker beach, china beach, stinson beach, rodeo beach, lands' end, navy memorial and for concrete and the port district says it needs the money for basic necessities like trash collection and janitorial services. >> we are looking at the fees as a last resort for the cost that have dramatically increased .

new this morning, a volcano in the canary islands, scientists say will create more danger for residents including health risks from volcanic ash. the eruptions have been going on for week with the intensity increasing. rivers of lava are sliding down the mountainside destroying everything in its path including hundreds of homes and thousands have been forced to evacuate.

back here at home, we've got two things to talk about. when is the good news on the air quality and two, the good news on some light rain coming back to northern california. we start off with a great beginning and that is the valley. this shows how widespread the marine layer is. we are all waking up to gray skies today and it looks like it here and it looks like it up in the north bay and we switch it over and put it in futurecast and you see how widespread the clouds are. watch it all melts back and it takes a little while and by the time we get into the early afternoon by 1:00 or 2:00 we still have some hangers on the immediate bay that everyone else will be looking at sunshine. let's turn our focus now to the next approaching system. really well-developed storm spinning out in the gulf of alaska and we take that rain and bring it forward and watch the leading edge of the showers

and most of this is going to the pacific northwest but there is a southern extent to this and it means we have a chance to get some rain. we are definitely going to get rain out of this for the far northern third of the state. that is very beneficial rain for the far north coast and by here at home the show was kind of fizzle and see what happened in the sierra, watch what happens when we look at this on accumulated rainfall totals. we don't see anything fall here in the bay area that we do see rain falling where we needed to fall and that would be on the mountains and where we have had far more fire than we need and at is re burn scar edown ldor we would like to see a little bit of rainfall here at home because we could use it on the northbay mountains and the this forward, a few showers off

the coast of sonoma that fall apart and late afternoon a little more rain and monday afternoon and evening you might get a sprinkle depending on your location in the bay area and more likely in the northbay but it could happen anywhere and it would not amount to much of any meaningful accumulation. it will look different and it's going to feel like fall and it will clear the air out. temperatures out there today, the cool side only upper 70s for daytime highs for the inland valleys and as we look across its clouds for monday and tuesday and that's where we have the system of light rain but the temperatures all the way down to 74 san jose. by tuesday, only going to 78 for the daytime high for the inland valleys for the spay and we will see temperatures in the nort aoud ere ev a drop of rain on there because if we are going to see any rain it will be on the

a great start to the day you know it's great when even the tri-valley waking up under the marine layer. we have all got it. sunshine as we get into the afternoon today with daytime highs relatively cool. going into the low 70s for daytime highs and we keep the temperatures in the mid 60s for much of the rest of the bay and there is rain coming to northern california, just not any measurable rain. this is monday and we will get to the very beneficial rain on the last game of for the northern third of the state. here at home it will be clouds and cooler temperatures, the forecast shows you cool numbers as do the inland valleys of the east bay. thank you for joining us. cbs sunday morning with jane pauley is next here on kpix 5.
