we begin with the looming government shutdown in our nation's capital. in less than 48 hours, more than 800,000 federal workers could be furloughed, and that's just one of the problems facing congress evendent ben cand a covid event today to push through his agenda. laura podesta is in new york with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, the president's schedule today was shifted as a last-ditch effort to meet with centrist democrats to make this pivotal week work and get the infrastructure bills passed. he really needs all democratic lawmakers to vote in unity. and a source familiar with the negotiations tells cbs news that progress is being made. president biden canceled a trip to chicago today as he tries to shepherd his legislative agenda through congress. >> the president is playing his role on getting these pieces across the finish line. >> reporter: democratic leaders will try to pass two bills this week. one is a trillion dollars for infras

$3.5 trillion for social programs like childcare and paid family leave. mr. biden met with senators kirsten sinema and joe manchin at the white house yesterday. two moderates with concerns over the price tag. >> the president felt it was constructive. felt they moved the ball forward. >> reporter: progressives are worried the social programs will be left behind. washington congress member pramila jayapal tweeted it's not the infrastructure bill, then maybe the build back better package down the road. we're going to deliver the entire build back better agenda. >> observing the right to object -- >> reporter: republicans blocked an attempt to raise the debt ceiling for the second straight day. treasury secretary janet yellen warned of dire consequences if it's not raised by october 18th. >> and our country would likely face a financial crisis and economic recession as a result. >> reporter: a more urgent deadline, 800,000 federal workers will be furloughed on friday if congress doesn't pass a measure to fund the government.

>> it's extremely nerve-racking. >> reporter: the watersons had to rely on food stamps to get by during the last shutdown. t think what's the most secure job than with the federal government? >> reporter: democrats are planning to vote on a funding bill today. the last congressional stalemate lasted 35 days between 2018 and 2019. it was the longest shutdown in history. anne-marie? >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. so top pentagon leaders will face a house committee today over the chaotic withdrawal from afghanistan. they testified for hours yesterday in front of the senate armed services committee, admitting the speed of the fall of kabul caught them offguard and contradicted president biden saying they told him to leave troops in the war-torn country. david martin has more. >> reporter: 5.5 hours of testimony before the senat armed services committee left no

doubt top generals warned both presidents trump and biden against a withdrawal of american troops. general frank mckenzie is the overall commander for afghanistan. >> i recommended that we maintain 2,500 troops in afghanistan. >> reporter: when asked last month whether his military advisers recommended keeping 2,500 troops there, president biden said this -- >> no. no one said that to me that i can recall. >> general milley, that was a false statement by the president of the united states, was it not? >> i'm not going to characterize a statement of the president of the united states. >> general milley, i can only conclude that your advice about staying in afghanistan was rejected. why haven't you resigned? >> it would be an incredible act of political defiance for a commissioned officer to just resign because my advice is not taken. this country doesn't want generals figuring out what orders we are going to accept and do or not. >> reporter: but books about the final days of the trump administration portray milley as doing just that, working behind his commander in chief's back because he feared trump might

provoke an international crisis. >> you're quoted as telling the top chinese communist military commander, quote, if we're going to attack, i'm going to call you ahead of time. is that true, general milley? >> i said i'll probably call you. everybody will be calling you. we're not going to attack you. just settle down. it's not going to happen. >> reporter: milley insisted he was not working in secret. other officials were on the calls with the chinese and still others knew about them. >> i personally informed both secretary of state pompeo and white house chief of staff meadows about the call among other topics. >> reporter: milley was also portrayed as agreeing with house speaker nancy pelosi that trump was, quote, crazy. when asked about that, he ducked the question saying, "i am not qualified to determine the mental health of the president of the united states." david martin, cbs news, the pentagon.

covid vaccines for children could be ready in november. pfizer submitted data to the fda yesterday on the effectiveness of its shot in children ages 5 to 11. the company says that it hopes to request emergency use authorization in the coming weeks. meantime, some people are wasting no time getting their booster shots. according to the white house, more than 400,000 americans got a third dose over the weekend. an additional million people have scheduled appointments for the coming weeks. administration officials say that their primary goal is to convince the roughly 25% of eligible americans to get their first shot. the family of gabby petito is speaking out for the first time after her body was found after a trip with her fiance. her mom said this -- >> i just hope that people are inspired by her. it's hard to put into words, but it means a lot to me that she's

touched so many lives already. >> petito's remains were found last week in a wyoming national park. her death has been ruled a homicide. meantime, authorities have no leads in the search for her fiance, brian laundrie, who vanished after returning home to florida without petito on september 1st. >> the laundries did not help us find gabby. they're not going to help us find brian. for brian, we're asking you to turn yourself in. >> laundrie is considered a person of interest in the investigation but has not been named a suspect. a hearing is scheduled for today in los angeles on the conservatorship that's controlled britney spears' life and finances for more than a decade. the singer wants her father, jamie, removed from his role as a guardian. earlier in week her attorney said her dad it, quote,

drivers has led to fuel shortages and long lines at british gas stations. a young climate activist had harsh words for global leaders, and a mass shooter was sentenced. the "capital gazette" in annapolis reports a judge sentenced the gunman who killed five people at the newspaper in 2018 to five life terms without parole. 41-year-old jarod ramos was armed with a shotgun when he walked into the newsroom and killed five employees. he pleaded guilty and argued that he was not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. a jury convicted him in july. and "usa today" says greta thunberg and other youth climate activists called out world leaders for not doing enough to fight global warming. >> this is not about some expensive politically correct dream of bonnie hugging or blah, blah, blah --

build back better, blah, blah, grecy, bh, blah, blah. this is all we hear from our so-called leaders -- words, words that sound great but so far has led to no action. >> thunberg and thousands of young activists from 180 countries are in italy this week for a three-day youth climate summit. they say governments have failed to meet funding pledges to help poor nations adapt to climate change. their recommendations will be sent to a major u.n. climate summit that begins next month in scotland. and the "chicago tribune" says a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the barack obama presidential center. the former president and his wife michelle scooped up dirt yesterday during the ceremony on the south side of chicago. the project was delayed by five years of legal battles over its use of park land and its possible impact on the

investor concerns over treasury yields and the fight over the debt ceiling and government funding weighed heavily. the dow skidded some 569 points. the nasdaq dropped 423, posting its worst day since march, and the s&p 500 lost 90. united airlines says nearly all of its employees are vaccinated against covid-19. the company's deadline for meeting the mandate was monday. yesterday it said it started the process of terminating 593 employees who declined to get the shot and did not apply for health or religious exemptions. united airlines was the first airliner to require the coronavirus vaccine among its worse. -- among its work force. some employees have sued united over the mandate. shopping at home goods is now at your fingertips. the home decor retailer launched an online store with categories including bedding, bath, and seasonal decorations. it offers free shipping on orders of $119 or more.

♪ popular south korean boy band bts is heading back to the stadiums. the pop group announced it will kick off its permission to dance tour in los angeles in november. bts was set to start a 38-concert international tour in april of last year, but it was postponed and then canceled due to the pandemic. actress lori loughlin has landed her first role since serving a two-month prison sentence in the college admission cheating scandal. loughlin will guest star on season two of "when hope calls" on the great american country family network. it premieres in december. the show is a spinoff of the hallmark series "when calls the heart." loughlin will return to her role
