i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a last-minute deal to avoid a government shutdown tonight. democrats and republicans have agreed on legislation to fund the government until early december. so it's expected to be approved by the senate and the house today, but their work is far from over. laura podesta has the latest from new york. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, they still have to vote on this new short-term budget deal today, and it doesn't address the looming deadline to raise the debt ceiling, so lawmakers still have to hammer out a deal there before the u.s. defaults on october 18th. plus, there's all of those infrastructure deals they still have to work out. congress has a deal to keep the government open. >> we are ready to move forward. we have an agreement o on the c the continuing resolution, to prevent a government shutdown. >> reporter: the house and senate will vote today to fund the government through december 3rd. >> democrats don't want to shut down the government. republicans don't want to shut down the government. >> reporter: 800,000 federal

employees will not be furloughed, and critical agencies dealing with the coronavirus pandemic can continue to work. >> it's going to be a home run -- >> reporter: last night members of both parties took a break from the political gamesmanship for the annual congressional baseball game. a charity fundraiser event. president biden made an appearance speaking with both teams. republicans won 13-12. >> just their second win in a decade. >> reporter: back at work today, mr. biden's two legislative priorities hang in the balance as democrats try to hash out a deal amongst themselves. >> i'm looking forward to having good negotiations and a good faith manner. >> reporter: west virginia senator joe manchin called the $3.5 trillion fiscal policy package insanity but progressives are promising to sink the $1 trillion infrastructure bill without it. >> i want the infrastructure bill to pass. i voted for it. i want to pass. we've got to pass both of them.

>> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi said she'll bring the infrastructure bill to a vote on the floor today but did acknowledge she can delay it. the infrastructure bill has already passed the senate, but the larger social spending bill has yet to come up for a vote in either chamber. anne-marie? >> all right, laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. ahead on "cbs mornings," we will talk with republican senator pat toomey on why his party is against increasing the debt ceiling and what it will take to reach an agreement with the democrats. a house panel has issued more subpoenas in connection to an investigation of the january 6th capitol riot. the committee wants to hear from 11 officials who were involved in planning rallies for former president trump before the attack. they'll be deposed starting at the end of next month. this is the second round of subpoenas issued in the probe. and the nation's top military officer is warning about the possible resurgence of al qaeda in as soon as six months.

general mark milley made the comments before a house panel yesterday. he told lawmakers about a new iy e teist group could withdrawal from ghanistan. >> a real possibility in the not-too-distant future, six, 12, 18, 24, 36 months. i think the taliban sitting in kabul significantly emboldens the radical jihadi movement globally. >> the white house says terrorist groups have been vastly diminished in the region in part because osama bin laden was killed, and that the u.s. has more sophisticated counterterrorism capabilities than it did before 9/11. britney spears is one step closer to total freedom. the singer emerged yesterday from a 13-year conservatorship controlled by her father, and now a judge could terminate the legal agreement in november allowing spears to make her own daily decisions. anthony pura explains. >> reporter: britney spears is

no longer under the control of her father. a los angeles judge has suspended the legal agreement that r pop singer's life for the past 13 years and has appointed a temporary conservator to replace her father effective immediately. >> today's a great day. it's a great day for britney spears, and it's a great day for justice. [ chants ] >> reporter: dozens of fans showed up at the courthouse to support spears. >> the united states government has failed britney spears, her fmily's failed britney spears. we're out here as her advocate. >> reporter: jamie spears has made day-to-day and financial decisions on his daughter's behalf under a court-appointed conservatorship since 2008 when the pop singer suffered an apparent mental health crisis. earlier this summer, the elder spears filed a petition to end his role after his daughter sought to have his control taken away. in court documents filed before

the hearing, britney's lawyer said her father crossed unfathomable lines by allegedly emai, texts, and calls, and having a listening device planted in her bedroom. in her ruling, the judge agreed removing spears' father from the conservatorship was in britney's best interest. some of the restrictions have already been loosened. spears recently got engaged to her longtime boyfriend and has bought her first ipad and a car. jamie spears' suspension is not appealable. cbs news, los angeles. a hit broadway musical was forced to shut down a day after it reopened due to the coronavirus. last night's performance of "aladdin" was canceled a half hour before curtain. the production announced that covid breakthrough cases were detected among the cast and crew. it is the first show to be canceled since performances resumed on the great white way. "aladdin" says the status of future performances will be updated. meantime, the nba is cracking down on unvaccinated

last year's national league rookie of the year fractured hi playoff spot sunday. williams said after the team's celebration he had a few drinks because -- became upset and hit a wall. so he's likely out for the entire post season. a florida man is caught on video catching an alligator in a trash can, and a former olympian faces jail time for the capitol riot. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports olympic swimmer klete keller pleaded guilty for his role in the january 6th riot at the u.s. capitol. the five-time olympic medalist pleaded guilty in washington, d.c., yesterday to a felony charge of obstruction of an official proceeding. keller wore his team usa jacket in the capitol on january 6th. he admits to brushing away officers who tried to remove him and yelling profane comments about democratic members of congress.

he faces up to 27 months in prison. "the dallas morning news" says an explosion at a dallas apartment complex injured eight people including three firefighters left in critical condition. firefighters were investigating a report of a natural gas leak yesterday at the two-story complex when an explosion left the building partially collapsed. everyone inside was accounted for. one survivor said she watched as a firefighter began to enter an apartment when the blast hit. >> to try and open the door again. and by. time she did that, the whole apartment blew up. and when the apartment blew up it blew me back up the stairs. >> whenever i saw the fire department when i was talking to my cousin, and i was like, they about to kick the door in. when they kick the door in, that's when we saw the big old explosion. >> an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the explosion. and "usa today" says a florida man used a trash can to catch an alligator and protect

youtube is cracking down even more on covid vaccine misinformation. the social media platform is banning false claims saying that shots on dangerous and cause health issues like autism or infertility. youtube deleted the accounts belonging to some of the most notable propagators of misinformation including accounts run by robert f. kennedy jr. the new rule will apply to claims about vaccines in general including those given for measles and the flu. a hiring spree at walmart. the world's biggest retailer is looking to hire 150,000 store associates nationwide to meet the surge in demand during and after the holiday season. store officials say most of the new hires will fill permanent full-time positions. walmart says it's offering competitive pay with an average hourly rate of about $16 an hour. some positions offer as much as $34 an hour. and now's your chance to buy george lucas in plastic. hasbro is releasing a new six-inch action figure of the

"the problem with jon stewart" begins streaming on apple tv plus. the biweekly show will explore one topic each episode. the first show looks at issues involving u.s. military veterans. the secretary of veterans affairs will be interviewed. it's ready, set, action for a new museum all about movies. the academy museum of motion pictures opens today in los angeles. the 300,000 square-foot museum features items from some of hollywood's biggest films including the "wizard of oz," "citizen kane," and "star wars." it was supposed to open in 2017 but was delayed by budget issues and then the pandemic. and come on down for a primetime special celebrating 50 years of the legendary game show, "the price is right."

the legal arrangement was put in place 13 years ago. the judge will likely terminate the conservatorship at a hearing in november. britain's economy is in danger of grinding to a halt because of a serious gasoline crisis. the military is now on standby to help deliver fuel to empty pumps. holly williams reports from london. >> reporter: the british government insists there's no fuel shortage in this country, but gas stations are running dry, panic buying has set in, and tempers are flaring. >> all the doctors, all the nurses, all the teachers, they all rely on fuel. >> reporter: the real problem is truck drivers -- a shortage of around 100,000 of them affecting the supply chain of everything from fuel to groceries. experts say it's a perfect storm.
