facebook ceo mark zuckerberg after scathing testimony about the social network. just hours after a whistle-blower went before a senate panel accusing facebook of putting profits over safety, zuckerberg broke his silence about the allegations. last night he shared a note he wrote to his country. he said, quote, it's difficult to see coverage that m represents our work and our coverage. i think most of us don't recognize the false picture of the company that is being painted. he also called it deeply illogical that facebook would push content that makes people angry for profit. it's one of the allegations made by a forormer employee who spor on capitol hill yesterday. skyler henry has more on that. >> they're paying for their profits right now with our safety. >> francis haugen testified before a senate subcommittee tuesday about the need for greater oversight and transparency over facebook. >> the choices being made inside of facebook are disastrous.

saying they don't agree with he issues she testified about. >> if facebook wants to discuss their targeting of children, i am extending to you an invitation to step forward, be sworn in and testify. >> reporter: the company says it agrees it's time to create standard rules for the sfwinten and has called on congress to act. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. lawmakers are running out of time to raise the debt ceiling. today, democrats will hold another vote, despite gop opposition. if nothing gets resolved in less than two weeks, the u.s. will fall into a recession. laura podesta has the latest developmentsts from new york. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the deadline is october 18th. it's unclear why republicans are holding this up as a recession would have impact on all americans. senate minority leader mcconnell said in a letter to president biden, we have no list of demands.

but there is speculation he wantmoatolitical turmtoaway fm biden's infrastrue plans. today, senate democrats will try to suspend the debt ceiling through december of next year. >> if republicans would just get out of the -- way, we could get this all done. >> reporter: republicans have blocked previous efforts over the past few weeks and are expected to do so again. >> republicans are not going to be a part of their masive spending and tax spree. >> reporter: but democrats are quick to point out the two aren't related. the debt ceiling allows the u.s. to pay its bills, including those racked up during previous administrations. >> there has nothing to do with money spent in the future. it's all money spent in the past. >> reporter: if the debt ceiling is not raised or suspended by october 18th, the u.s. would default, possibly causing a recession. >> it would be catastrophic. >> reporter: a lengthy process to raise the debt ceiling would delay other priorities, like

president biden's legislative agenda. >> other countries are speeding up and america is falling behind. we've got to reset the pace again. >> reporter: the president visited michigan yesterday to sell his build back better plan. the $3.5 trillion proposal being scaled back in hopes of garnering support from moderates, like senator joe manchin. >> we've been talking about everything. >> reporter: it's unclear what might be cut to bring down the price, but a group of house democrats told the president their priorities include new climate protections, paid family leave, universal pre-k and an extension of the child tax credit. back to the debt ceiling, though, president biden suggested democrats change the senate's filibuster rules which would lower the typical 60-vote threshold to 50. but moderates like west virginia senator joe manchin and arizona's krysten sinema have been opposed to abolishing the filibuster for other issues this year. >> laura, thank you so much.

the justice department is whether two fbi agents involved in the sex abuse investigation of former usa gymnastics dr. prosecuted. deputy attorney general lisa monaco told a panel the department is reviewing its earlier decision to not prosecute them after new information emerged. the fbi is accused of failing to properly address complaints in 2015 against nassar. he was sentenced in 2017 to 60 years in federal prison. and we are learning more about the man who was arrested after parking a suspicious vehicle illegally in front of the supreme court building. the suspect has been identified as dale paul melvin of michigan. authorities say that he came to the capitol complex in august and made concerning remarks. during yesterday's incident with he refused to engage with authorities. capitol police eventually moved in and removed the 55-year-old from his vehicle.

>> the man refused to talk, made a entoffect time for talking ine. at that time, we backed off.ots reased. this morning, there are new details about what caused california's worst oil spill in years. fresh evidence suggests a ship's anchor snagged and dragged an underwater pipeline for more than 100 feet. the pipeline spilled more than 136,000 gallons of oil into the pacific ocean. >> if you can picture the pipeline essssentially vertical, the pipeline has essentially been pulled like a bow string. so at its widest point, it's 105 feet away from where it was. so it's kind of in a semi circle. >> meanwhile, the coast guard acknowledged it did not investigate the spill for nearly ten hours after receiving first call about it.

johnson & johnson is seeking emergency approval for its covid toe its seco dose the green light for people who are older than 18. johnson & johnson says another shot of its single dose vaccine increases its effectiveness to 94% against symptomatic infection. the company says the two-shot regimen provides 100% protection against critical covid cases. meantime, a new government study says a shot in the arm helped curb the virus earlier this year. from january through may, researchers say the vaccines prevented about 265,000 new cases, 107,000 hospitalizations and 39,000 deaths among seniors. coming up, a fashion don't. an activist trespasses on the runway at a fashion show in paris. her message to the world. and opportunity at the end of the rainbow, actor levar burton has a new gig after the "jeopardy!" drama.

the first ever feature film in space. the two boarded the orbiting spacecraft yesterday with a cosmonaut from kazakhstan. they were greeted by other astronauts and cosmonauts on the iss. they will spend two weeks film parts of the movie "challenge." it's about a surgeon who rushes to the space station to save a crew member who needs an urgent operation. reuters says a climate change protester disrupted the louis vuitton fashion show in paris. a woman carrying a sign that said overconsumption equals extinction. joined models on the cat walk yesterday. the models kept on walking right by the woman. she was protesting against the fashion industry's impact on the environment. the woman was wrestled to the ground and removed by security. and "the los angeles times" says after being snubbed by "jeopardy!" actor levar burton was named the grand marshal of the 2022 parade of roses.
