well, good morning. i'm ann marine green. southwest troubles. the airline cancels nearly 2,000 flights over the weekend, stranding passengers. but the faa is painting a different picture. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne marie. the faa is saying don't blame us. we had enough people on staff all weekend. now, there are reports that this is a protest by pilots who don't want to be forced to get vaccinated. >> reporter: ryan lacey and his family were looking forward to going to disney world. but like thousands of other passengers across the u.s., their flight from denver was canceled. >> we're going to try to get there. when, i don't know. >> reporter: southwest blamed air traffic control and weather-related challenges for 1,800 cancellations. but the faa said their shortages ended friday.

sources tell cbs news, a southwest staffing shortfall this weekend was a factor in why so many of the company's flights were grounded. other airlines didn't face widespread cancellations. >> i was told it may be a crew issue basically. >> reporter: the union representing southwest pilots denied speculation that it ordered a sick-out in response to a covid vaccine mandate. the same union asked a court friday to block that requirement. southwest apologized for the massive travel disruption, saying it was trying to get people home quickly and safely. >> it's not been fun. it's not a good way to end our honeymoon. >> reporter: like many travelers, teresa smith said she needed to return to work today. >> i'm sure the emails will be full, so i've got to get back. >> reporter: southwest says it is still offering fewer flights than it did prepandemic, so it makes it tougher to reschedule passengers. this is potentially an issue we may see happen again with pilots from other carriers.

the vaccine mandate is december 8th. airlines that don't comply could potentially lose government contracts. anne marie. >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you very much. powerful storms hit parts of oklahoma, spinning off several suspected tornados. this was the scene in the city of norman, where large hail fell. torrential rain made driving hazardous and caused flash flooding. there were reports of damaging winds snapping trees and destroying homes. tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were posted in large areas of oklahoma. at the height of the storm, at least 10,000 customers were left without power. this morning a cbs news poll is shedding light on what americans think about president biden's build back better agenda. it appears not many people know the details of the $3.5 trillion measure. christina has more on that. >> reporter: when it comes to

president biden's build back better plan, the thing most americans say they know about it is the price. a new cbs news poll finds while a slight majority approves of the bill, only 10% say they know specifically what's in it. but 59% say they know it could cost $3.5 trillion. something republicans have repeatedly criticized. >> they really should work on an infrastructure package that would pass overwhelmingly. they have an insatiable appetite to raise taxes and spend more money. >> reporter: white democrats debate the and scope of the larger spending plan. the cbs news poll finds americans overwhelmingly support individual elements of the bill, like medicare expansion and paid family leave. >> i'm genuinely optimistic that in the senate we will get the

build back better bill, pass it and get it over to the house. >> reporter: but former republican president trump urged resistance. >> congressional republicans must stand strong. this is not a time for republicans to fold. >> reporter: mr. trump has not ruled out a 2024 run. >> i can't keep america great. i'm back to make america great again, slash, dash, comma, again. i don't know. >> reporter: the aides were supposed to sit down with investigators next week. cbs news, the white house. dr. anthony fauci is encouraging families to go trick-or-treating this halloween. the nation's top disease expert said it is safe since covid cases in the u.s. are on the decline. >> i mean, this is a time that children love.

undersea pipeline leaked more than a week ago. authorities believe the pipeline was damaged by anc ar several months to a y it ruptured. more than 18,000 people are expected to run in today's 125th boston marathon. the world's oldest marathon was canceled last year because of the pandemic. this year covid changed parts of the race, including reducing the numbers of runners. participants will not be be able to gather in large groups. organizers say it was a tough event to plan. >> there has never been anything more complicated than trying to plan a marathon, mass gathering event in the face of a global pandemic. about the only thing this year that's the same as every other year is the course, the road the runners will come down. everything else is different.

named in the court documents. ultra marathon runners in utah hit some bad weather, and there was a deadly shooting inside a bar. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the minnesota pioneer press reports three men are now under arrest after a shoot-out in a st. paul bar left one woman dead and 14 people hurt. it happened early "sunday morning" at the 7th street truck stop bar, which was filled with customers. several people fired shots. a 27-year-old woman was killed, and three people arrested were among those wounded in the shooting. all those hurt are expected to survive. there is no word on a motive for the shooting. the "houston chronicle" said a 3-year-old texas boy was found safe in a wooded area three days after he disappeared. christopher ramirez was reunited with his mother saturday. he vanished while chasing a neighbor's dog outside his home in plantersville on wednesday.

more than 100 people searched for the boy. a property owner said he heard a noise and found the toddler 6 and a half miles from where he went missing. >> it was wonderful to get that call, to see him alive and drinking water. he was excited to see his mother. the embracing was just very touching. >> authorities say the boy is in good shape, and there are no signs of foul play. salt lake tribune said dozens of runners were rescued from near whiteout conditions during an ultra marathon race in the utah mountains. shortly after the 50-mile race began saturday, heavy snow started falling, and temperatures dropped below freezing. search crews using four-wheel drive vehicles and snow mobiles rescued 87 runners. several treated for hypothermia. one runner was hurt in a fall. still ahead, happy meals for teachers. one fast food chain is offering

shatner's flight to space will be delayed. the "star trek" actor will now blast into orbit wednesday morning instead of tomorrow, all because of bad weather. the 90-year-old will be part of the second launch with crew on board. the company's vice president of mission and flight operations will join the mission, along with two other people who paid $250,000 each. and teachers can cash in on free breakfast at mickey d's this week. educators, school staff, and administrators can get a free thank you meal starting today through friday. it will be served in a classic happy meal box with a choice of one entre, hashbrowns and beverage. the program was inspired by teacher appreciation campaigns at local restaurants and last year's thank you meals for first responders, anne marie. no toy in the box, but they get a thank you note. well deserved.
