breaking overnight, steve bannon, a former aide to president trump, could be charged with contempt of congress. a house committee investigating the deadly january 6th riots unanimously approved the measure, and it comes after bannon refused to comply with a subpoena. laura podesta is in new york with the latest on this story. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and the committee that voted is comprised of democrats and republicans, so it's a unified message they're sending to mr. bannon and to other trump aides. to paraphrase what committee member liz cheney said last night, bannon and others have no legal right to ignore what this committee asks in order to investigate the insurrection. >> those in favor say aye -- >> reporter: the bipartisan house committee investigating the capitol insurrection voted to hold steve bannon in contempt of congress. >> left unaddressed, this defiance may encourage others to follow mr. bannon down the same

path. >> reporter: the committee views his testimony as critical, arguing statements he made on january 5th suggest foreknowledge about the violence that happened the next day. >> all hell is going to break loose tomorrow. it's not going to happen like you think it's going to happen. >> reporter: bannon, a longtime aide to former president trump, refuses to turn over documents or show up for a deposition. mr. trump has urged his top aides not to cooperate. something the committee says reveals volumes. >> they suggest that president trump was personally involved in the planning and execution of january 6th. >> reporter: tomorrow the full house will vote on whether to send the resolution to the justice department which could then decide to pursue criminal charges against bannon. maryland democrat jamie raskin says other trump aides are working with the committee. >> a lot of people want to come forward and feel terrible about the role that they played. >> reporter: former president

trump filed a lawsuit to stop the release of key documents, but president biden waived that executive privilege. those documents could be released as soon as next month. the panel has subpoenaed more than a dozen people including former white house chief of staff mamark meadows. some of them are already turning over documents and giving testimony. anne-marie? >> all right, laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. millions of americans could soon get an extra layer of protection against covid. the fda today is expected to give the green light to moderna and johnson & johnson's booster shots. this as a new study shows how effective the pfizer vaccine is for children. lilia luciano has more. >> reporter: just weeks before the federal government is expected to authorize the pfizer vaccine for children as young as 5, a new study shows it's more effective in kids than for

adults. for kids, the vaccine is 93% effective against hospitalization. for adults who are not his is g real daha it's 88% ctiv ld urents to vaccinate their kids. >> reporter: the fda is likely to approve the pfizer and johnson & johnson shots. the agency is expected to say that mixing and matching is safe. for example, a person vaccinated with johnson & johnson could get the pfizer or moderna vaccine as a booster. infectious disease dr. monica gandhi says it's good news. it doesn't just protect you against hospitalization but even infection or having any symptoms at all. >> exactly, yes, there was an improved protection from any symptomatic infection. >> reporter: getting covid after being fully vaccinated remains rare, but colin powell's death from covid this week brought the immunocompromised and elderly into focus. powell was 84 years old and also had parkinson's and multiple myeloma. >> that's one of the reasons why back in august a recommendation from the fda and then cdc came to get that third immunization

school shooting massacre in parkland, florida, is expected to plead guilty today. authorities say nikolas cruz gunned down 14 students and three staff members at marjorie stoneman douglas high school in february of 2018. the plea will not come with conditions, meaning prosecutors can still seek the death penalty. that's something a jury will decide. the trial could start in january. and this maryland couple accused of selling information or trying to sell information about u.s. nuclear powered warships to a foreign country have been indicted. jonathan and diane toebbe are due in a federal court for a detention hearing today. they were arrested earlier this month and charged with allegedly trying to sell military secrets to a foreign government. in one case, they allegedly hid the classified information in a peanut butter sandwich. the couple could face life in prison.fbi assian billionaire with close ties to vladimir putin. officials wouldn't say what they

were looking for yesterday at a washington, d.c., mansion or new york city townhouse. a spokesperson for the man said that the searches were connected to u.s. sanctions. they also said that he didn't own the homes, but his relatives did. the russian man's name was mentioned multiple times in robert mueller's report on interference in the 2016 presidential election. and this morning, an investigation is underway into a fiery plane crash in texas. officials say the private jet crashed just outside of houston yesterday as it attempted to take off. the aircraft rolled about 500 feet and slammed into a fence. all 21 people on board were able to get out. just two minor injuries were reported. the passengers were headed to the a.l. championship game in boston to cheer on the astros. coming up, the latest twist in the case of attorney alex murdaugh as a judge denies him bond. and historic appointment. the nation's first openly transgender four-star officer
