good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning officials are working to determine whether remains found in a florida nature park are those of gabby petito's fiance. authorities say they also found items belonging to brian laundrie including a backpack and notebook. he vanished more than a month ago after returning home without petito following a cross-country trip. laura podesta is in new york with the latest. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the remains were found after laundrie's parents directed investigators to a trail that they hadn't previously searched. now some are criticizing the family asking why they hadn't alerted authorities to that area sooner. investigators are working to identify human remains discovered during the search for brian laundrie. they were found yesterday in a wildlife preserve south of tampa along with his notebook and backpack. >> these items were found in an area that until recently had been under water.

>> reporter: laundrie was reported missing over a month ago. the 23-year-old is a person of interest in the death of his fiancee gabby petito whose body was discovered in wyoming. she and laundrie had spent the summer on a cross-country drive, but he returned to florida alone in september. >> our evidence response team is on scene using all available forensic resources to process the area. it's likely the team will be on scene for several days. >> reporter: laundrie's parents joined the manhunt on wednesday morning. their attorney says they advised police to search a trail that their son used for hikes. the remains were found there in a frequently flooded swampland known to be teeming with alligators. >> we can get dna, they'll use dna. to be able to turn around within 24 to 48 hours with a quick test. >> reporter: for weeks protesters have gathered at the laundrie home urging them to cooperate with authorities. >> anything that provides answers for gabby petito and provides justice for gabby

petito i am all for. >> reporter: a $30,000 reward for information leading to laundrie is still posted. the fbi stressed that it has yet to i.d. the remains. laundrie has never been charged in connection to gabby's death. last month a grand jury in wyoming indicted laundrie on a charge of using another person's debit card without authorization. the petito family lawyer said it had been gabby's bank card. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. this morning there are new efforts to keep millions of americans safe from covid. the fda has now authorized booster doses of the moderna and johnson & johnson vaccines. moderna boosters are now authorized for seniors and high-risk people, while j&j were approved for everyone. the agency gave the green light to mix and match meaning no matter which shot you initially received, you can choose any booster you'd like. it comes as the white house announced details of its plan

for 28 million children ages 5 to 11 to get a low-dose pfizer shot. federal regulators are set to meet over the next two weeks to discuss the issue. >> we have secured vaccine supply to vaccinate every child ages 5 through 11. and as soon as the vaccine is authorized by the fda we will begin shipping millions of doses nationwide. >> the white house says as of today the u.s. has successfully donated and delivered 200 million covid vaccines to more than 100 countries around the globe. new york city has announced one of the strictest covid vaccine mandates in the nation. mayor bill de blasio says city workers must be fully vaccinated or be placed on unpaid leave. the mandate does not include a testing option and means that all workers must get at least one shot by next friday. the largest police union representing nypd officers says that it plans to sue the city over the new vaccine mandate,

but it is all too real. giant rocks were seen floating down a river of lava on la palma in the canary islands on tuesday. the lava from the volcano which erupted last month shows no signs of letting up and has already destroyed around 2,000 buildings. four more neighborhoods were evacuated this week. so far more than 6,000 people have had to leave their homes. how climate change is worsening our health, and a warning about the onions in your refrigerator. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports the cdc has linked a growing outbreak of salmonella to whole onions. more than 650 people have become ill in at least 37 states. the outbreak was first reported last month, but health officials had not identified the food causing the illness until now. the cdc says the red, white, and yellow onions were imported from mexico and distributed by pro source, inc.

the cdc's advising consumers to throw away any onions if they do not know where they are. -- where they are from. a report from the medical journal "the lancet" says climate change is putting the lives of millions in danger around the world in more ways than you may expect. the study from more than 100 doctors and health experts says human-caused climate change is making people's health worse in just about every measurable way. it points to wildfires causing respiratory problems for people thousands of mile away. it says floods and storms have increased the risks of deadldly diseases. the report says world leaders are missing the opportunity to address the problem. and our denver station kcnc says the parents of a 6-year-old girl who fell to her death at a colorado announcement park have filed a wrongful death lawsuit. she fell more than 100 feet on the haunted mine drop ride at the glenwood caverns adventure park. state investigators say she was not buckled in, and two newly
