of green on it right now. on a close of you, good rain showing up in the north bay and certainly downright to the heart of the city across the babe ridging into the east bay where there is a good amount of rain all already arriving. this is the leading edge of the system. teacher cast shows the showers are only beginning. that is a quick look ahead here. that gets us to noon, up to 3:00. the 5:00 hour. and that is actually when we get this right through the heart of the bay area. this does not even make it down to the south in earnest, that is, where you get the heaviest rain until this evening. so it is going to be a while. one other thing about right now, it is quite windy. we look at the current wind speeds we are already seeing gusts into the upper 30s. also down in the city and in the peninsula. that is where things stand right now just to get you ready for your i will be back with much more in just a few minutes. as the bay area gets

pummeled with rain, some areas are under evacuation orders. the concern is mudslides and flooding. we report from boulder creek where many residents say they are not leaving. >> reporter: this is highway 9, the main street and the retail center of boulder creek. any of the businesses plan to shut down today. i talked to about 50 people last night. only 2 are planning to evacuate. >> where else are we going to go? >> reporter: many people are saying they are fatigued. >> won't be too late by the time it is unsafe? >> the big concern is debris flow. >> we have decided to stay. >> reporter: most people stay with family and friends or pay for hotel rooms for more than a month during the fire evacuation last year. they say no more. >> in my particular location, we have a generator, we have chainsaws. we know how to use them. and we are prepared.

>> reporter: there were lines at the local gas station. people filling up gas cans to power their generators. >> of the power goes out, we have extra power. >> reporter: authorities are ordering hundreds of families 8. in the would likely sleep mudslides, downed trees and power outages. >> eliminating excess from the grocery store and whatnot. we have a lot of food in the fridge. i'm not too worried about that. >> reporter: fire survivors are not taking any chances. >> life is more important than property. >> reporter: her family has backed up and they are driving to a hotel in the morning. was what is important is waiting by the door. pictures and passports. >> reporter: many nonessential businesses in the evacuation zones also plan to close.

with a posted this earlier today out of an abundance of caution. we have decided to close tomorrow and possibly monday. >> reporter: even though folks in the mountains have dealt with many big storms, authorities say it is different this time. expect to see a lot more mudslides. in boulder creek, kpix5. uz cou announced they will open a shelter for evacuation filton today. evacuation center will be located in all three seller rental schools. the shelters will work under covid-19 protocols. the center opens at 8:00 this morning. residents can look at the evacuations online for questions on evacuation orders and other resources. you can call the number on your screen. you can also register for emergency notifications by text. and sonoma county water officials are trying to protect dam on the russian river. the rubber dam is located near burnsville.

how the sonoma county water agency has now deflated it to prevent it from being damaged and high water flows. residents are no strangers to flooding and some say they are just going to go with the flow. >> there's something very peaceful and routed about this place. you either have the fear factor with the river. you just feel like you go up and down a little and wait for it to settle down. and then we will come back down. >> the inflatable dam is filled with water, not air, so it could take several days to empty. it can be revealed stay dry for a long enough time. but everyone is hoping that will not be necessary. in the east bay the fair will not be opening today. the fair is making a comeback for the first time in nearly 2 years. but the storm is forcing the event to close its gates again. this time due to concerns about high winds and rain. affair usually takes place earlier in the year. it was held online last year. the oakland zoo may also be closed today due to the river. the zoo says anyone who has already purchased tickets for

window was also shattered. he wasn't sure if it was a gunshot or a bb gun. the officer called for backup and the officers searched both cars to see which shattered the window. there is no word on what actually hit the cars. the officer is describing it as an unknown projectile. filling nobody with her. the vta's largest union says the transit union workers had to be sure at work during the pandemic and they want hazard pay. >> transit workers have been getting covid at higher rates than the rest of the public. >> reporter: workers with the valley transportation authorities say they have been exposed to greater risk during the pandemic and therefore are deserving of hazard pay retroactively. a portion of the funds has received from the biden administration. >> transit workers, unlike other categories of workers, are not able to work from home. they've been essential front- line workers since they won. >> reporter: so far the workers

have not received additional pandemic pay. vta like many other agencies has struggled to stay afloat as ridership dwindled. and negotiations have been contagious at times. >> that is why the union is staging a rally today. because every other attempt to negotiate and discuss hazard pay has gone without hazard pay being given. >> reporter: agency released a statement saying vta is actively engaged with the unions to reach an agreement regarding additional pay for the challenging circumstances employees have endured on the job. encouraging news for employees will say they put themselves and their health on the line. >> we are still in the pandemic. there is still a variance. delta variant. the entire population is not vaccinated yet. on tuesday and advisory committee is set to discuss

largest reuse facility. instead of dumping the water, the company will capture and recycle most of the water. the system reportedly can recycle up to 20 million gallons of water a year. and hear something that we have not seen in many months. streams have come to life around late like anita's in marin county. the water feeding into the lake is a clear sign that rings are having an impact. the runoff from the watershed the lakin supplies water for parts of marin. however the spillway is still dry but that could change with today's pick storms. the lake level has just been about at the edge with a few inches of snow and the water will be flowing for the first time this year. is get into the forecast and check on the latest for doppler. there are showers in the north they that are coming down like moderate to heavy at times. but it is also windy up here.

we have gusts from the 40 mile an hour range already happening. taking a look at the doppler we would get you updated on how this is playing out. for the moment, the focus is in the north bay. with the heaviest rain moving up to napa, sonoma and marin. you can see all the bands of yellow. but we have seen a persistent southern into that. however, that is good rain from 101 all the way up through mendocino out into clear lake and down towards the city now. we are already seeing good rain coming across the mountain which is good rain and has gotten a good amount of rainfall. can feel is already about 200% of average for the entire month of october, which is good. and that number is going to go much higher today. san francisco is already over 125% for what we have typically gotten and we haven't even started here yet in terms of the best rain. we would take the futurecast forward. watch the organize line right there. see how that slowly marches its

way. i know it is subtle but there it is a game. that is the signature you look for in the radar or in this case on the futurecast, for where the most persistent and heaviest rain is. that is the stream that marches its way south and as we get toward the early evening, he finally gets down to the heart of the play. bay area. it's going to take a little while to get to san jose. there is the back is of it and that does not even clear the santa clara valley until we get to tomorrow morning around 8:00. so good rainfall totals with that. but also land. that is the issue that could cause some downed trees. we are already seeing gusts in the 6:00 hour this morning well into the upper 30s and 40 mile an hour range. the deeper the seder purple, the higher the wind speed. that takes us to 8:00. it is still going just a stroll. in fact a little stronger. the wind will pick up a bit in

intensity the closer you get to the leading edge of the defined line of rain. this goes on for a while. not only for rainfall but four went also. as we get into the morning hours tomorrow, the wind will relax. rainfall totals are quite impressive. here is your take away from this. you are going to encounter localized street flooding. low light intersections or clogged gutters. so be mindful as you get on the roads. not only the pounding of water, it is the downed trees of the strong winds. so keep that in mind as we look at the rainfall totals. it is rain accumulating and wind. and for san jose you can see the impact of hitting rain showered. san jose will likely end up with only about an inch. but that is still enough to take into consideration. but it will not be as rainy. as the accumulations on the footprint down for the cz you burn scar. that is the major concern. we also have same concern for

the mountains. you can kind of still make out in red, i know it is difficult but that is the burn scar and there is the heaviest rain this morning between about now and 11:00 this morning. that will be a test for the slopes in terms of debris flows. and stay away from the beaches here today and for the next few days. this high surf warning has to be taken seriously. this is the kind of situation that has taken lives in northern california. and the waves will be very dangerous. and even if you think you are in a safe spot, sneaker waves can come up and grab you. seven-day forecast, plenty of rain today. scattered showers tomorrow. thankfully, no significant rain for the rest of the week and we will need a test to clear out and we are going to get it. in the pictures are pretty much identical bay area wide. that is not the story in the seven-day. we will still have a few leftovers showers on monday morning. but by the second half of monday we are done.

>> live from the cvs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. welcome back. inc. you so much for joining us. let's start with a quick check of our weather. we've gotten to the good rain. especially in the north bay. so if you are just waking up, showing us a good amount of rain marching across much of napa, sonoma and marin. i will show you the wins in the

second. but first a closer look at the rain. yellowstone oranges are showing you moderate to heavy rainfall. not only hear through the north, that we can follow that coming all the way down to sausalito, and out towards hercules in richmond. good rain here and in the east bay. watching it on the friedrich as you can see the heavier bands of rain taking as well as in the morning and into the early afternoon. there is the organized line. that doesn't even get to the bay area until we get to the early afternoon. that is some of the heaviest rain for the day. one other thing to discuss. the wind. the winds will pick up in intensity over the next few hours as well. so be very careful if you have to be on the roads early this morning. especially north of the golden gate bridge. i will be back with a complete forecast in a few minutes. in the east bay the alameda county air will not be opening today. the fair is making a comeback for the first time in nearly 2 years but the storm is forcing the event the close escape due

two inches in some locations appear. just since we started this at midnight. there is a flood advisory up here. i will show you that in one second. but if you have to be on the roads in north bay, be very careful. if you don't have to go, don't go. because it is going to be difficult driving for the next several hours. the rain coming through so the marin into the east bay across the richmond bridge up into hercules down over east bay hills. so we've already seen good rain down here. because of the rain we've already gotten in north bay there is a flood advisory. there will be likely more issued in different locations as this progresses. speaking of which, let's watch it progress. that gets us ahead and called a.m. we are still seeing the primary cause of rain in the north bay. see the line right there, it is a bit abstract. he keeps redeveloping. there it is a game. that is where you can pick up the best rain. it is still focused in the north through noon. but by the time we see this advance through the early

evening, it is coming through golden gate. we are seeing it well into the east bay and the peninsula. but it doesn't get to the south until we get to the evening. that is when the best rain gifts to places like san jose. you will see the concentrate persistent racial this evening. all you have to do is track the progression of the line of showers to get a good idea on how this will go. winds are another factor. we are already seeing gusts into the upper 30s but the winds will get stronger over the next few hours. as it moves south, the wind picks up on the leading edge of it. and it will stay this right through today. there's a wind advisory because of this. this is the wind that will blow trees over. it will certainly club called unexpected degree debris on the road. if you don't have to be on the roads, hunkered down at home. you will see the wind's clear the south bay as the heaviest rain passes. very impressive rainfall totals. there will be flooded roadways and low sections, anywhere near

creeks that tend to be close to neighborhoods or roadways. similar story in the south bay. although the totals are not as high, it will be raining enough to cause issues on the road. street flooding, especially for gutters that have been clogged. i'm major issue for the czu burn scar. that is where the concerns come in with five inches of rain. for the santa cruz mountains this afternoon and evening. stay away from the beaches. a high surf advisory. the surf is going to be too dangerous. we've seen too many people lose their lives and conditions like this with the swells becoming be an imposing. not only today but all the way into tuesday, stay away from the beaches. and there's the snow. it doesn't show up for a while. it is a warm snow so we will continue to see rain until he gets colder. in the forecast, today is the

most impressive day. a few leftover showers as we get into monday. but they will clear out in the afternoon. the temperatures don't really change all that much, there's a bit of a warm up as we get towards next week. but the real story is timing out the rain. and that is going to be the focus of the next 36 hours. >> in that map shows the intensity of the rain where yellow is moderate and orange is heavy and then red is really really heavy, i was surprised not to see more red. >> the important thing to look at is the numbers. anywhere you were seeing the numbers getting up to 2 1/2 to 4 or five inch range, that is really what you want to basis off of anyway. and those are the numbers that apply to just about every community with the exception of san jose. which may only get an inch and a half out of this. still enough rain to impact the roadways. it is a significant amount of rain just by going on the

>> basketball is amazing. i love playing basketball. being able to have that distraction allowed me to stay august. >> reporter: focused but hurting. her father, her support was absent from her life for a year. he went to jail just as she started high school. and experience she was still reeling from long after his release. >> you don't ever picture someone that you are supposed to look up to, do something bad. >> reporter: back then she leaned into her grief into her story. sharing it with others motor forward out of high school, onto college and into adulthood. >> it is kind of a shift. i'm older now, i can make my own decisions. understand what is best for me. >> reporter: her dad moved forward to. >> reporter: i think his time incarcerated definitely helped me put a lot into perspective for him. his children, his life here. he's changed his ways in order to ensure that he is able to

rain, officials are worried about the czu fire scar. they are announcing many evacuations but many residents will not leave. the search is on for anyone shattering car windows on highway 17. an officer responded to a report of a shattered windshield and was also targeted. police are not saying with objects were. thankfully nobody was hurt. tuesday fda advisory committee is set to discuss whether or not to recommend up visor covid vaccine for kids between the ages of five and 11. pfizer says it's vaccine is 90% effective in that age group. right now is only approved for people 16 and up. gridlock at the nations ports is continuing to strain the supply chain. the backlog is impacting everything from alcohol to toys. as the holes drilled distribution association is posting pushing for vaccine among his workers, some are threatening to leave. potentially worsening the strain. san francisco's oldest brewery will soon run the city's largest commercial reuse facility.

instead of dumping the water that it uses to rinse tanks and clean bottling lines, the company will capture and recycle most of that water. the system reportedly can recycle up to 20 million gallons per year. high def doppler is active. we've already gotten over two inches of rain in many north bay communities. this dorm is exceeding expectations on rainfall and the wind has also picked up in intensity. we have 40 mile an hour gusts for north bay communities near 35 in the city. there is a flood advisory for north bay communities until 10:00 is morning. basically low-lying intersections underpass and small streams will be the concerned they are. if you don't have to be on the road, you might want to give it a second thought in just a second home. thank you for joining us. cbs sunday morning with jane pauley is next here on kpix5. enjoy the rest of your sunday and stay dry.
