nation are closer to being eligible to get a covid vaccine. an fda advisory panel voted to recommend a low dose of pfizer's shot for children ages 5 to 11. final approval is expected in the coming days. so laura podesta has more from new york on this. laura, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. this was expected, and of course it's welcome news for parents who want their kids to be protected against the virus and the highly transmissible delta variant. the vaccine for kids 5 to 11 would be a two-dose regimen like it is for adults, but the dosage given would be a third of the standard amount. >> 17 voted yes, and we had one abstain. >> reporter: an fda advisory panel has given the first recommendation for pfizer's smaller dose covid-19 vaccine for children 5 to 11-years-old. >> at one point we're going to vaccinate people that the virus will go away. it's not going away, and i think we're going to have to find a way to live with it. >>orte a cdc pelines give us a

weigh ext we. it's possible shots could be going into young arms just a few days after that. >> we don't want children to be dying of covid even if it is far fewer children than adults, and we don't want them in the icu. >> reporter: the group of experts determined that the benefits outweighed the risks which include myocarditis, zero cases of the rare heart condition were found in the study. more than six million american children have contracted covid. still, parents are split on whether their kids should get the shots. >> everybody can be safe. >> i think that they're too small. this is something that's too new. >> reporter: some on the panel did express concern about new vaccine mandates. >> i'm just worried that if we say yes that the states are his ccine to childre to g schon

epor roughmillio children will be eligible if pfizer's pediatric vaccine receives emergency authorization. and pfizer's study indicated the vaccis 91%ffective in preventing symptomatic covid in kids. anne-marie? >> all right. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. overnight strong winds and heavy rain pounded new england as a nasty nor'easter moves just shore. the storm battered the northeast yesterday. mola lenghi has a look at some of the damage. >> reporter: tens of millions of americans feeling the impact of severe weather. in the northeast the season's first nor'easter brought heavy rain and damaging winds, knocking down trees, flooding roads in new jersey. the coast guard confirms 45-year-old laurence broderick was found dead after kayaking off the coast of long island. police in one new jersey town made more than a dozen water

rescues from cars and flooded roads after the storm dropped nearly five inches of rain in some areas. ahead of the storm, many feared a repeat of the deadly and devastating weather brought by the remnants of hurricane ida last month. >> i'm a little worried because i got flooded in a couple of my properties. if we lose it again, i'm going bankrupt. >> reporter: this storm had already cut a path of destruction through the midwest this weekend with tornadoes decimating several towns in illinois and missouri. >> the roofs and walls are down, and i mean, yeah, just a total massive destruction. >> reporter: also this week on the west coast, a power storm dumped record-breaking rain triggering mudslides and major flooding in california after 13 inches of rain fell in parts of the state. the storm, a small consolation for the parched western states. the waterfalls at yosemite roaring again after california's driest year in nearly a century.

>> that was mola lenghi reporting. a reportedly possible he shooting on the set of alec baldwin's movie in new mexico. santa fe's district attorney told "the new york times" criminal charges are on the table. she said reports that the crew had used guns with live ammunition for target practice hours before the deadly shooting were unconfirmed. an affidavit reveals baldwin was practicing drawing his gun when he shot and killed cinematographer halyna hutchins and injured the film's director, joel souza. first it was facebook. now lawmakers on capitol hill have other social media platforms including snapchat and tiktok on the hot seat. they want to know if our kids are being kept safe. skyler henry has a closer look. >> reporter: in a senate commerce subcommittee hearing, utah senator mike lee challenged snapchat executive jennifer stout. his staff created an account for a 15-year-old with no

preferences and says what showed up on the aldia p wu shouldn't go to bars alone, notices for video games that are rated for ages 17 and up, and articles about porn stars. >> i am unfamiliar and taken notes about what you have said that your account surfaced. >> reporter: stout joined executives from youtube and tiktok, answering questions about how their apps are looking out for children on issues from privacy to safety. >> he was suffering from dental pain -- >> reporter: senator amy klobuchar shared the story of 19-year-old devin noring of minnesota who died after taking fentanyl laced percocet that he bought on snapchat. >> we have deployed proactive detention measures to get ahead of what the drug dealers are doing. they are constantly evading our tactics. >> i think there's other ways to do this as creating liability when this happens. so maybe that will make you work even faster so we don't lose another kid. >> reporter: earlier this month one facebook whistleblower told lawmakers the company

prioritized profit over user safety. even going as far as generating algorithms potentially exposing children to dangerous content. frances haughen, the former facebook employee who sounded the alarm, testified before a uk parliament joint committee monday. >> facebook's own research says now the bullying follows children home. it goes into their bedrooms. >> reporter: lawmakers also expressed concerns that tiktok is tied to china's communist government. allegations the app's parent company, fight dance, denies. >> if it were not accurate, you would answer the questions, and you have dodged the questions more than any witness i have seen in my nine years serving in the senate. >> reporter: the company says it stores all of tiktok's u.s. data in the united states, and has recently tightened its privacy practices for children. skyler henry, capitol hill. this morning, president biden is back in washington after campaigning for terry mcauliffe who's running for governor of virginia. the election is next week. last night in arlington, mr. biden headlined a rally for

subpoena. the nfl is punting on requests to release a report on its ten-month investigation into the workplace culture of the washington football team. last night commissioner roger goodell said that the league will not make the report public because it wants to protect the identities of the former employees who testified. he also said the team has already been held accountable. it's been fined $10 million, and owner daniel snyder has stepped away from running day-to-day operations. and the general manager and president of hockey operations for the chicago blackhawks has resigned. stan bowman quit yesterday after investigators said that the team mishandled allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted two players in 2010. the blackhawks hired an outside law firm to conduct the investigation. the nhl fined the team $2 million, and another executive also stepped down. well, coming up on "cbs mornings," in our "eye on earth"
