hello, on behalf of the archdiocese of san francisco welcome to mosaic. have you heard of the order preachers? they are also called the dominican order as they were founded by saint dominic. the official name in latin translated as the order of preachers. each member with a latin initials op after his or her name. the membership in the order includes fryers, nuns, sisters, and they are fame for their
5:31 am
intellectual prowess and 800 years of existence producing many leading illusions and philosophers. current membership worldwide of the order includes about 5800 dominican fryers including 4300 priests. in the dominican order there is an intimate enduring relationship with the archdiocese of san francisco in service and leadership. the dominicans were here before the archdiocese was. in our original arch bishop was a dominican prie. our guests today are to dominican priest serving in the bay area. we will learn about the dominican history, the mission in the west, and more. after this brief break joynes to meet the dominican.
5:33 am
hello welcome to come mosaic. are to dominican priest -- let me introduce them to you right now. on the far and the large redheaded man father michael, you are the pastor of saint dominic's parish in san francisco. next to him brother james moore. op after each name let's not forget that. you are called -- for the western province. both local guys from a farming family. >> from pacific on the western
5:34 am
coast. >> growing up in the bay area you joined though dominicans. as i mentioned the history is intimately involved with the archdiocese. tell me about that. >> when the dominicans came to california they wanted to come where the action was. the pope sent to dominicans who'd known each other from the eastern province they were working together and sent one who was the bishop to start the diocese here. also sent the first dominican. while he created the diocese in san francisco they said they want to go to the capital where the action is. in that time in california you had the capital and the place in venetia california. there was the government. the capital california and also the portal to the gold rush. this was in the 1850s. lots of gold coming.
5:35 am
it's a better natural bay than our own bay here. all the shipping and everything was coming. all gold miners would come in. they had tons of gold. you also had guns because the armory which exists today most munitions made her the first world war and others were made from the west coast were made there. the dominicans had the government, old, guns, let's bring god. it's the original 4g network. you've got that sense of bringing god to a place where you had all this interaction. she met the seat of the archdiocese in san francisco. it moved from monterey to san francisco income 1853. the original dominican who became the arch bishop had been in the states as a missionary for 10 or 12 years.
5:36 am
what we are talking about is mission territory. here we are and suddenly there's hundreds of thousands of new population in the san francisco bay area. >> the dominicans were founded 800 years ago. we work continuing our mission by coming here. founded as an order of preachers to combat error, heresy. to enlighten the faith, and bring the faith to people where the gospel is not preached well, or preached at all. >> it's an interesting name. on the website which we will show later there's a nice big red button that says request a preacher. i almost pushed it. i wasn't sure exactly what would happen. i understand that from my expense with dominicans they are persuasive apologists for the faith. for the persuasive condensers of the importance of truth and beauty, and god's presence.
5:37 am
>> absolutely one of the things saint dominic did was when he founded the order, he set up we would have not only the active preachers and complete template is. we will live in small monasteries and pray, and together we contemplate duty, truth, and the gift of giving fruit of contemplation. so desperately needed in these crazy times. >> you been in archdiocese for 150 years. from the beginning. there is one parish of dominicans in the archdiocese. saint dominic's church. you for the western province, how big is the western province? >> it's basically all the west coast of california. it goes as far east as utah. he goes as far south as tucson and across the border in mexico. as far north as alaska where we have a new house in anchorage.
5:38 am
we serve the cathedral and we go out and act as missionaries the original party with the arch bishop being a dominican sister. they are also here in numbers. the wonderful thing about the dominican order it's not just the priest or the teaching saint dominic new in order to radically change culture or bring to enlighten it you needed a strong component of women. contemplative nuns. even before these were formally found, he found the nuns first. a little place 800 years ago. i had the privilege of visiting. you have contemplative nuns living there. they are from all over the world.
5:39 am
it was attractive to me. it wasn't simply a group of guys getting together to preach it was together, we are -- behind us and supporting us is groups of contemplative nuns of active sisters which, little bit later. they began to teach and they are known in this diocese for education. sumac definitely. the contemplative nuns are for prayer. therefore education or healthcare helping families in need. there is a lot of disease in orphans. they answered this call. >> mother mary came along with the arch bishop. they are founders and she was a founder of the san rafael dominican sisters who still
5:40 am
exist in the college up in san rafael. there are still contemplative nuns and active dominican sisters today >> monastery of -- and a string fact he has one of the most unique combinations in the order throughout the world actually. when the master of the order came to visit he noticed or mentioned to me i contemplative dominican nun in virginia. the only brother and sister biologically connected through the order. >> let's take a brief break and come back and talk more about the dominicans finding out the mission.
5:42 am
5:43 am
father michael pastor of saint dominic's church. i wanted to get to this point. the dominicans mission order preaching, persuading, preaching the gospel. i grew up in east they had the tail end of the missionary era of the irish priests and nuns who came over and christianize us. it seemed to me we are living in a post-christian society. secularizing world. are we in a new mission territory? you are addressing in your work? >> when you look at our culture there are lots of things the culture proposes ways for happiness. leasing possessions we can get. san francisco is outrageous. >> children aren't born here. >> we have a sense of pleasure or sense of power in silicon valley in this technology.
5:44 am
living in times technologically and perhaps in terms of business and economic booming. there is a deep spiritual lack or absence. the culture doesn't have a real response to how it said so famously, our hearts are restless. preachers preaching the truth contemplating and giving the fruits of that contemplation. we feel we've been given a great gift of the gospel. we want to share with others to feel god's love it. the absence we are searching for. >> the challenge we face -- we've been priests almost 12 years now. 10 years ago i found the challenge with the youngest they would say i'm spiritual, not religious. 10 years later we are finding the generation after the millennial are more i'm neither
5:45 am
spiritual or religious. there is a great thanks. there is nothing there. philosophically there is a huge hole. maybe god exists, he has no relevance on my day-to-day life. it's a real melee problem to have. >> that's interesting. you think there's been an eric like this before? it didn't matter to the prevailing culture? >> if you are a student of history these things happen in cycles for sure in terms of losing it. cultures tend to diminish when they are cut off from spiritual roots. in every age -- saint dominic his age in our age has several parallel connections. you have people that would say they have spiritual tendencies or want to be good people and
5:46 am
recognize virtue. yet they would reject the institutional church seeing as being a barrier to god. we see god's love and the gospel is always incarnational. god created everything and not just a kind of spiritual relationship but works through the body. he then sets up a church. he sets up the followers. we see ourselves continuing that apostolic command pr the last thing jesus said, go preach. we take that seriously. that's your last will and testament. we take that to her and we are the only group that is named not for who founded us, the only order that's name for what we do. we preach. order of preachers. >> it seems the culture we are living today has weakened families.
5:47 am
weakened community. the most networked culture. everyone's alone with his preferences. where do we find community? >> you can have a relationship with instagram account. they can't love you back. >> have you tried? >> i am not getting into that. >> we've been friends for too long. >> you mentioned with young people, you don't run schools for the most part, but you do college chaplains? >> a lot of what we do is we set up centers next to universities. for instance for two years i was a chaplain at the university of arizona. it's a state school. we have remembered these in
5:48 am
stamford, university of utah, university of oregon. we do a law of this with college age students. i've been blessed working with younger people. >> my wife is a college teacher. she's dealing with 18-year-old minds. i have no idea. she tells me stories. how are the kids doing? >> dominic is one of our wonderful ministries. we have a strong young adult presence. we have our mailing list is hundreds of thousands every week. we gather once a week so the consistency of catholic is to know you are not alone. they feel like they are cut off not just from others but to others who believe -- that ministry is gathering together and allowing people who are young to get permission to live your faith boldly in a time
5:49 am
more politically and religiously so many ways to gather -- they pray together. in a sense they gather to have fun and play. they are formed together. this past things they have done is host a play. we had it for the parish. they seek to bring the parish together as well. they are eager to live their faith. >> there has to be social life. >> this goes back to people feeling disconnected. you can have relationships with and instagram account. people are lonely in their new to the city. they might know they are catholic sometimes more robust or less. they have a group of people that were devout and they show up there and all the sudden they are formed together.
5:51 am
5:52 am
this is the website of the western dominican province and this is the province for which father james is the picker for advancement. if you take a look at this you see every resource for finding out about the dominicans and what they do. wonderful website. easy to find. slide number two is from the church in san francisco that is the parish of which father michael is the pastor. it looks like the guys from the abbey -- we are seen dominicans down there. this is the most beautiful catholic website you will ever see. it's the most beautiful church in san francisco i would say. thank you. let's talk about this. i have and i think any catholic who lives around here has an impression vague or not, saint dominic's is doing really well. you hear about the newsletter from the dominicans that we have 20 new locations this year
5:53 am
and i'm thinking they seem to be doing something right. what's going on? >> there is success in our ministry sites. we are flourishing in places wisdom says maybe we shouldn't. it's a secular city. we la and seattle. same thing and acreage. again at our university center. our ministry is flourishing. it's reflected in the fact that men are showing up. we are growing which is incredible. you think of the priesthood shortage. all the bad news and the catholic church. there is a law of good news here. especially our vocation numbers being up. doubling and going up this way. >> it's a long course of discernment. >> they are sticking it out. >> our retention rate is much
5:54 am
higher than it was in, 1989. thanks, be to god. men are enjoying and staying. >> part of your procedure is to live in community. you have a community of men. you have a support system. >> we are from very strong families. one of the big reasons i wanted to join the order that community was because i wanted a family. it's worked well for us. >> you are like brothers. >> exactly. you're running a big city parish. i'm saying there's no children here younger generation you can't afford to live here. we have a thriving youth
5:55 am
population. >> part of it comes from the pillars of the dominican order. there are four. we prayed together. there are eight vis. almost 20 francisco. it's open to the public you can pray very early in the morning, in the evening. people when they see this group gathered in prayer they say prayer is happening how do i be part of that? something is happening here. there is a sense in which one person will preach on a weekend. they gather together. we talk about the gospel. we do this ancient practice. we dig into it. one of us preaches as if the whole community has reflected and now we are preaching together. we prepare meals ge
5:56 am
eat together. one of the most attractive aspects is not simply sacraments going on. the quality, availability -- if you will of the joy radiates from that living dominican community in san francisco. a pleasure to be there. >> it's beautiful and there is beautiful music. your communications is an important part of your modern preaching. it's wonderful. we have about a minute and a half left. what message do you want to leave the viewers with? >> live your faith boldly with joy. people should see we are different and happy. >> indeed, jesus says, i have come -- my joy might be in you.
5:57 am
your joy might be full. our vision that saint dominic's is to radiate the joy of the gospel. here in the heart of the city. we are joyful. the joyful fryer. that joy is contagious. it spreads without being diminished. we make the boldest witness we can when we are joyful and living as catholics. >> if a catholic wants to have a great homily during mass or intellectual nests. there will be something good happening with a brilliant author. there will be good art, music. all that kind of stuff. people are making a great impression. saint dominic is famous for the rosary. >> we got it. the blessings of the virgin mary. >> thank you, for being here.
