cbs news projects new jersey democrat phil murphy defeating his republican rival jack ciattarelli to win a second term. >> i am humbled to be the first democratic governor re-elected in the great state of new jersey since my dear friend the late governor brendan byrne did this in 1977. [ cheers ] thank you, new jersey! >> murphy was expected to easily win, but the slim victory is a concern for democrats, especially after they lost the gubernatorial race in virginia. president biden said voters sent a message. >> i do know that people want us to get things done. they want us to get things done. people are upset and uncertain about a lot of things. >> the president is urging congressional democrats to come together to get his build-back-better agenda on his desk. party leaders in the house say votes on that measure and the bipartisan infrastructure bill could come soon.

meantime, efforts are now under way to vaccinate millions of children in the u.s. against covid. president biden said 20,000 site will be ready next week to administer pfizer's dose for kids ages 5 to 11. some families are wasting no time. laura podesta has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. doctors are saying if you have a child in that age range, 5 to 11, get them the pfizer shot now. but not all parents are heeding that advice. millions of u.s. children are lining up to be vaccinated against covid-19. >> done deal. >> reporter: pfizer's reduced dose pediatric shots began to be administered on tuesday night shortly after federal officials approved it for 5 to 11-year-olds. >> in clinical trials, vaccine side effects were mild, self-limiting, and similar to those seen in adults with other vaccines recommended for children.

the most common side effect was a sore arm. >> reporter: surgeon general vivek murthy offered a personal endorsement of the vaccine. >> my wife and i will be taking our 5-year-old son to get vaccinated, and we will be so grateful that we can more confidently send him out into the world. >> reporter: parents rushed to book appointments for their children, many expressing relief that they could finally get immunized. >> when i heard that there was a chance for the kids to be vaccinated, we signed up the moment that we could. >> such a huge relief after the last 20 months of really keeping them at home and just doing everything we possibly could to keep them safe. >> reporter: not everyone is on board, though. nearly a third of parents in a recent survey said they weren't planningng to have their kids vaccinated immediately. almost another third said they won't vaccinate their children at all. and coronavirus vaccines for babies and toddlers under the age of 5 are now being tested. they're not expected to become available for at least several months, anne-marie. >> all right, laura podesta in new york. thank you so much.

there's some big news in the nfl. green bay packers quarterback aaron rodgers has reportedly in are questions on whhed, and olated leagus protols. vlut >> reporter: according to multiple reports, the nfl has considered the reigning mvp unvaccinated since the start of the season. back in august when asked about his vaccination status rodgers said this -- >> yeah, i've been immunized. you know, there's guys on the team that haven't been vaccinated. i think it's a personal decision. i'm not going judge those guys. >> reporter: was that misleading? >> certainly seems like it was. i feel misled. >> reporter: bill reiter is a cbs sports analyst. >> 7% of players are not vaccinated. that means they follow different protocols, but the rules apply differently. this is the reality when you're a star. >> reporter: rodgers has conducted weekly and post-game news conferences in person and without wearing a mask while packers players who are unvaccinated participate in media sessions on zoom.

under nfl protocols, unvaccinated players are subject to a $14,000 fine if they refuse to wear a mask or maintain social distancing. repeat violations can lead to a four-game suspension. the nfl says it previously disciplined individual teams for failing to enforce covid protocols in the past and says it's reviewing the situations with the packers. the packers' head coach declined to comment on rodgers' vaccination status. vlad duthiers, cbs news, new york. this morning there are new allegations in the deadly shooting on the set of alec baldwin's latest movie. lawyers for the film's armorer are suggesting that someone wanted to sabotage the movie. the attorneys for hannah gutierrez-reed speculate a disgruntled crew member mixed live rounds with dummy rounds after their client said the weapons were unattended for several hours. legal documents reveal baldwin was told the gun he was using wasn't loaded with live ammunition when

he accidentally shot and killed the cinematographer. for the first time in more than a decade, the supreme court listened to arguments in a major gun-control case. at issue whether a strict new york law violates the second amendment. here's skyler henry. >> reporter: the supreme court justices seemed inclined to rule against the new york law which says self-defense isn't enough to receive a conceal carry permit. people need to prove a special need to be permitted. >> why isn't it good enough to say i live in a violent area and i want to be able to defend myself? >> so how that consistent with the core right to self-defense which is protected by the second amendment? >> reporter: the justices also questioned new york's practice of giving more licenses in rural areas compared to city centers like manhattan. >> how many muggings take place in the forest? >> i take your point that there's a different risk in the city, but there is also a different public safety consideration. >> reporter: the liberal

justices seem okay with restricting guns in densely populated areas. >> is it supposed to say you can carry a concealed gun around the streets of the town or outside just for fun? i mean, they are dangerous guns. >> it's supposed to be what new york says that they give to lots of applicants at least in other counties which is an unrestricted license. >> reporter: the justices don't appear ready to allow guns just anywhere even if they rule the new york law is unconstitutional. >> if you can see it as i think the historical record requires you to that states did outlaw guns in sensitive places. can't we just say times square on new year's eve is a sensitive place? >> reporter: the attorney for the man challenging the law says he's not challenging the able to prohibit guns in special places such as churches or schools. skyler henry, cbs news, the supreme court. >> a decision on the case is expected sometime next spring or early summer.

"the atlanta journal constitution" reports 11 white

jurors and only one black juror were selected in the murder trial of three white men accused of chasing and killing ahmaud arbery last year. prosecutors accuse defense attorneys of eliminating potential black jurors because of their race. the georgia judge acknowledged there was discrimination by defense lawyers but said the state law limited his authority to intervene. the defense lawyer said potential black jurors were cut not because of their race but due to bias against the defendants when questioning during jury selection. the "associated press" says former las vegas raiders wide receiver henry ruggs iii was driving 156 miles per hour before a deadly crash according to prosecutors. ruggs appeared in court yesterday in a wheelchair and neck brace. authorities also say he had a blood alcohol level twice nevada's legal limit when his corvette slammed into the back of an suv on tuesday. the vehicle caught on fire, killing a 23-year-old woman and her dog.

the raiders released ruggs hours after the crash. >> we love henry ruggs and want him to know that. his terrible lapse in judgment of the most horrific kind, it's something that he'll have to live with the rest of his life. >> he faces up to 46 years in prison if convicted on various charges. and "politico" says meghan markle is calling u.s. senators to push for paid family and medical leave. the duchess of sussex called republican senators shelley moore capito and susan collins about the topic. she got the numbers from democratic senator kirsten gillibrand. markle wrote an open letter to senate leadership last month in support of paid family leave. still ahead, a new experience for "sex and the city" fans. airbnb is renting out carrie's new york city apartment. we'll show you the amenities.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. on the cbs "money watch," a major u.s. automaker is the first to require workers to get a covid vaccine, and "sex and the city" fans can live in carrie's apartment. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. stock futures are pointing to a flat open with investors mulling the federal reserve's decision to begin tapering some of its pandemic-era monetary policy support. meantime, the three major indices hit record highs again yesterday. the dow gained 104 points. the nasdaq rallied 161, and the s&p 500 added 29. ford is now the first major

automaker in the nation to mandate coronavirus vacc for the tosats 8th to be fully vaccinated against covid-19. executives say employees who don't get a shot or an approved religious or medical exemption will be put on paid leave for up to 30 days. after that, their job protection will expire. ford says it wants to achieve the, quote, highest vaccination rate without severe consequences to any employees. gamers can now turn to netflix for more than just movies and tv shows. the media streaming service launched five mobile video games this week including a play on its signature sci-fi series "stranger things." right now the platform's android subscribers can start playing free of charge. no word on when netflix's iphone subscribers can game and chill. you can live like "sex and the city's" carrie bradshaw. airbnb has an apartment complete

licel ng yesterday at the finish this is the 50th anniversary of the race. last year's marathon had to be heir pandemic. about 33,000 people are expected marathon which passes through all five of the city's boroughs. and the city of atlanta will honor its world series champion braves with a parade. they returned home after winning their first title in 26 years. star first base man freddie freeman hosted the world series trophy over his head as fans cheered their hometown heroes. there will also be a free concert tomorrow in addition to the parade. coming up on "cbs mornings," gayle's exclusive interview with basketball legend magic johnson as we approach the 30th anniversary of johnson announcing to the world that he had hiv. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news."

green light this week. president biden said the doses will be available at about 20,000 locations around the country. after nearly two years on the front lines of the covid pandemic, north america's nursing home work force is burnt out. yet applications to nursing schools are rising, driven by people looking to make a difference. mole lenghi reports. >> reporter: some people never question what they want to do with their lives. why do you want to be a nurse? >> i can make a difference in someone's like life or even day when they're going through a difficult time. >> i think with the pandemic people shy away from health care now, but watching my friends and family work tirelessly, i've never felt more motivated and excited to be in health care. >> reporter: michael usino of temple university initially expected the pandemic to reduce interest in nursing. >> what we were initially afraid was that students were going to

be seeing the news and social media and what's happening in the hospitals and on the front lines and be dissuaded from nursing. but i think we've been very lucky with this generation of students feeling that inspiration to actually want to serve. >> reporter: you've seen the opposite. >> we've seen the opposite effect for sure. >> reporter: he says nursing school applications at temple increased roughly 15% this fall. in 2019, almost 7,500 people applied for about 110 spots. those who want to be nurses are stepping up, evening knowing the job can take a lot. nursing department chair mary terar says temple makes self-care, mental health, and learn how to avoid burnout part of the curriculum. >> you think that it's the sciences that you need to master or anatomy and physiology or pharmacology but you need to learn how do i take care of myself. >> reporter: despite the challenge, future nurses seem encouraged which is perhaps encouraging for anyone who needs a nurse. mola lenghi, cbs news, philadelphia.
