we begin with dramatic testimony in the trial of three white men charged in the shooting death of ahmaud arbery. travis mcmichael, who fired the shots, will return to the stand today. he teared up yesterday as he offered his side of the story for the first time in public. he called it a life-and-death situation after getting into a confrontation with the unarmed 25-year-old black man. mcmichael and two others chased arbery through a georgia neighborhood in february of 2020 after they said he -- they thought he broke into a house. mcmichael claims self-defense when he shot and killed arbery. with more on his testimony now, here's omar villafranca. i want to give my side of the story. i want to explain what happened. >> reporter: instead of invoking the fifth, travis mcmichael gave the jury a first-person account of what he says happened the day he shot and killed ahmaud arbery. mcmichael broke down crying as he described the final deadly confrontation captured on cell phone video as a fight for his

life. >> what were you thinking at that moment? >> i was thinking of my son. sounds weird, but that was the first -- the first thing that hit me. >> what did you do? >> i shot him. >> why? >> he had my gun. >> reporter: on february 23rd, 2020, his father, gregory mcmichael, spotted arbery running from a home under construction. the younger mcmichael says he grabbed a shotgun and jumped into his truck with his father. prosecutors have argued that the mcmichaels and william roddie bryan chased arbery through the neighborhood after suspecting him of burglary. >> did you want to stop ahmaud arbery and talk to him? >> i did. >> reporter: he also talked about his law enforcement training while in the coast guard and mentioned how pulling a well on someone can make them comply. during cross-examination, prosecutor linda dunikoski discussed his point further.

>> you learned as part of your time in the military that you can't force people to speak with you. >> that's correct. >> okay. and that if someone walks away, you have to let them walk away. >> yes. >> you were trained that displaying a weapon may be considered psychological coercion -- >> under certain situations, yes, ma'am. >> that was omar villafranca reporting. the prosecutors will continue to cross kexamine mcmichaels today. he has pleaded not guilty along with two other defendants. in oklahoma now the fate of a death row inmate who is set to be executed today lies in the hands of the state's governor. the oklahoma pardon and parole board voted this month to recommend granting clemency to julius jones. it's also recommended commuting his sentence to life in prison. jones has been on death row for nearly 20 years after he was convicted in a deadly 1999 shooting. he maintains his innocence and

claims that he was framed by the actual killer. last night, supporters for jones gathered outside of governor kevin stitt's house calling on jones' execution to be canceled. and earlier in the day, jones' mother made a lee from capitol. -- plea from the state capitol. thing. if you think julius is guilty, give him a fair trial! do it over again! do it right! >> prosecutors say jones and his defense teams are being dishonest in omitting key facts in the case. and this morning, jury deliberations enter a third day in the homicide trial of kyle rittenhouse. his lawyers are asking for a mistrial again. at issue, the quality of drone video used in closing arguments. bradley blackburn is in new york with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the defense says the version of the video that they received was low resolution, but their request for a mistrial may only

matter if this jury comes back with a guilty verdict, and the wait for their decision has kenosha on edge. two people were arrested wednesday outside the court house in kenosha, wisconsin, as the community remains on edge while awaiting a verdict in kyle rittenhouse's homicide trial. >> i believe in what that kid did. i think they ought to give the kid a pat on the back, give him his weapons back, tell him job well done. >> what we saw was two people killed. the verdict must so some accountability for the loss of life. >> reporter: 500 national guard troops are standing by if things get out of hand. resident like scott carpenter hope to avoid a repeat of last year's violence that burned his furniture store to the ground. >> i pray that it stays peaceful, that cooler heads will prevail and we realize that burning down our town is not how it act. >> reporter: inside the courtroom, jury deliberation restrictions are entering a third day. >> we would have done this case in a little bit different manner.

>> reporter: yesterday, rittenhouse's team asked for a mistrial over this drone video that shows him killing joseph rosenbaum. the defense had a lower quality version until recently. >> we didn't have the quality of evidence that the state had until the case had been closed. >> reporter: prosecutors say they did not intentonally give the defense a different version. the judge says he will rule on the request if there is a guilty verdict. and prosecutors say that the defense's own video expert would have seen that lower quality clip and didn't have an issue with it. but this prosecution has already been sharply criticized for missteps during the trial. it would be stunning if their mistake now resulted in a mistrial. >> completely stunning. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you very much. two men convicted of murdering civil rights figure malcolm x are set to be exonerated to after a 22-month investigation by the manhattan district attorney's office. muhammad aziz and khalil islam

spent more than two decades in prison. aziz is 83. islam died in 2009. the investigation found that authorities withheld key evidence in both of the men's trials. malcolm x was murdered in february of 1965. a third person who was convicted, thomas hagan, was sentenced to life in prison. he was paroled in 2010. well, the so-called qanon shaman will spend 41 months in prison for his role in the january 6th capitol attack. jacob chansley who wore face paint and horns during the riot was sentenced yesterday. during the ruling, chansley told the judge it was wrong for him to enter the capitol but emphasized he was not an insurrectionist. he is one of more than 650 charged. rapper killed. young dolf is shot dead in memphis. where minorities are calling for calm. and senator amy klobuchar shares good news after being
