now, let's talk about some of the ways in which you engage in society and community around you like when the issues come up. how do you see your ministry? >> i see my ministry as first and foremost, my face must be relevant to the life i lead. if i am leading a life, for example, my son's school, where the educational system here, i bring my faith to that. there is no dichotomy in who i am. i'm not just a pastor but i am a man of god. so, to engage in things of the community, whether it be
5:42 am
helping build a community garden, why do i do that because out of my faith and being a good steward of the gifts god has given us likewise, if there is a challenge, then the people of faith, is a personal thing for me is a personal choice to engage that. is someone going to do something about that, i want to be there. >> anthony? >> i have a saying that you can't withdraw what you have not deposited. what i mean is that we as pastors want more people to be involved with our church and ministries. i believe some churches build walls up. temple is the temperatures where they kick walls down. that requires our personal relationship with god.
5:43 am
20 bring to the outside community? would i bring a spiritual integrity. we are involved in ministries that are outside in the community because when we look at jesus, jesus when we look at scripture, i think one time he was inside the temple. the rest of the time he was bringing the spiritual walk as god to the outside of the community. he was there with a woman at the well and toward her secular activities where. he was going out to the people. that is what we believe at temple. it is imperative we knocked on the walls of the church, which we have with the various ministries. >> uses one of the few times he was in the temple, he talk about the spirit of the lord that was in his hometown then he got ran out of town and was killed. sometimes it's not in the temple we can have affirmation or support. >> sometimes it truly is out it is boldness in and a boldness
5:44 am
outside. it's not either/or, i think it is both and. at temple, we are focused on having a vibrant praise and worship for all people. come just as you are and be as you are. but also take a minute outside of the walls of the various ministries that we have. >> i completely agree with reverend anthony. we have to be radical in our faith for so long and far too often we are trying to be safe. we are trying to be careful. so often, we find that the phase component, it is not about trying to be extreme on one side or the other. we are talking about fair. all parents want their children to receive a quality education and fairness and be equipped to
5:45 am
compete globally in the workplace and educational space. all of these things, we bring a voice to that and say we need to be part of the process. we need to be at the table. as like to say, and some of my colleagues like to say, if you are not have the table then you are probably on the menu. we want to ensure that we are at the table and at least bringing the voice of those who typically have no voice and two are not typically considered and i think that is what christ did and does through us. we continue to do that. >> we will look at the next segment in a minute. i want to further this discussion because you guys are hitting on great points. please join us. reverend anthony, reverend bobby.
5:47 am
5:48 am
>> i'm going to go back to the beginning when we were talking about new year's resolion. people say it's new year's day, i want to lose weight. i want to handle my finances better. i want to change and improve myself. more important than new year's day, should be resurrection day. how can we improve ourselves on that day? i believe in my theology that jesus came to not just himself be resurrected before the church to be resurrected. not just from death to life, but in our daily lives. things that need to shed from us that are really dead, that are holding us back. we look at ourselves, where am i going this next year in my spiritual journey?
5:49 am
and for me, echoing that. more importantly, the resurrection is about getting u rising up like the phoenix from the ashes. as a pastor, and one who leads a faith-based organization in the state, it is about lifting up the people. it is about empowering the people, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, empowering others to fish for themselves as well. all of us believe, people of faith in god, believe if we elevate the conditions of the least of us, it is greater for all of us. for me, i am all about it's not just on easter sunday but every day is a resurrection day. every day is about let's get up and celebrate the gift of life and what god has placed before us. let's go celebrate? how do we do that? by living this life and
5:50 am
spreading joy to someone. kind of just play tag you're it. now, just go and do likewise. that is what christ did for us. >> i agree with reverend bobby. also, we have an organization at our church called bay area immigration task force, which is connected with justice for our neighbors in washington dc. it has to do with helping people who are trying to become citizens of the united states and then repelling the country's desire to put people out of our country. it requires a boldness in faith. it means that okay, churches don't do this. at temple we do this. we provide legal services. we have a lawyer on full-time staff at the church and an office that does nothing but deal with immigration rights and issues to help people.
5:51 am
it requires a boldness to go out. it is not for the country or some of the country may feel is the right thing to do, but as people of faith, we feel it is the bold thing to do. >> temple is multiracial, right? >> temple is not is the but one of the most diverse churches being for lifestyle, ethnicity and ministries. we are not pigeonholed into have someone should come to church just how they should come out. we are so bold at temple, churches sometimes have a habit of sitting in one seat all the time. someone that's homeless, someone that hungry, someone of a different lifestyle can come sit in any seat and will be welcome. that is jesus.
5:52 am
>> there is about 14 different languages spoken there. >> 14 different languages and maybe a few more different ethnicities. >> you have been in sacramento for 10 years now. in fact, i baptize your son, isaiah. it is good to see you again. when you in sacramento, you city capital of things that were happening. we have another minute or so in this segment. i understand you are a person of a pastor's organization there. >> i am the president and ceo of the california association of black pastors. it is an advocacy and empowerment agency. we advocate on the half of not just african-americans, but we understand and most of the best categories you can name, education, health, economic empowerment, we typically take residence at the bottom.
5:53 am
our efforts are to empower the community and lift them up. we work with all communities, jewish communities, different faith backgrounds. when we celebrate, when jesus said love your neighbor, didn't to say a black neighbors, invite neighbors, he said love your neighbors. that is what we do. and that, you will often find me and others of the capital advocating on behalf of many of the proposed legislations going forward. it benefits the entire state. >> we will come back in this last segment. hard to see you guys go. >> it's hard to leave. >> come back in his last few minutes with these great ministers of reverend anthony and reverend bobby.
5:55 am
i am ron swisher. i hope you have been with us this whole time because you have been inspired if you have been. in these last few minutes, i'm going to ask reverend anthony and reverend bobby, what is the most joyous part of your ministry and what is the most arduous and difficult? >> the most joyous time for me is being able to bring the good news of the gospel of jesus christ and being able to help someone improve their life. it's not about living a life the way i do, or choosing to do things the way i was, but embracing their faith the way that's comfortable for them. my greatest joy is when someone says they want to accept christ as their personal lord and savior and live out their faith, whatever that means. the most challenging as some of the community issues that we have to engage in.
5:56 am
that can be challenging because often you will take shots from colleagues and others and administrations perhaps do not prefer you to be out. and even some church members that you love. they would rather you not engage that. when there is a need, we must respond. >> reverend anthony? >> again, what reverend bobby said, it is spreading the good news of jesus christ. also at temple, people realizing the dorms and arms of the church are open to everyone. one of the things that really excites me is when i see little children come to the church and enjoy being at church, running around the church with excitement and being taught about jesus christ. it really thrills my soul. the most challenging for me is breaking down the stereotypes
5:57 am
of what christianity is. some people stereotype the church and feel that we are a bunch of self-righteous hypocrites. that is not always true. more times than not, we, as a humble people with our hearts and hands open to help whoever we can and to live by the example of our jesus christ, no matter who it is, offering them sincerely last. >> tell us where you are so people can go there. >> i am at citrus heights united methodist church in citrus heights california. >> i am a 65 beverly street in san francisco. 94132 is the zip code. if you want to come to church and have fun, come to temple. if you want to be part of a church that is extremely diverse, come to temple. >> you can first come to community in fairfield.
5:58 am
>> it is great to have you guys. i miss you being together in ministry that god is calling you to do your individual ministries. you have served wonderful churches, oak park, and centennial. and of course, a■nthony has bee at tracy as well as temple. thank you for joining us. i am ron swisher. we hope you have been inspired by these two great ministers. if you smell gas, you're too close. leave the structure, call 911, keep people away, and call pg&e right after so we can both respond out and keep the public safe.
