breaking developments in the christmas parade tragedy in waukesha, wisconsin which is a suburb of milwaukee. authorities say at least five people were killed and more than 40 injured when an suv plowed into a parade. the mayor called the incident a horrible and senseless act. a person of interest has been taken into police custody. elise preston has the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this tragedy happened during a holiday tradition in the community that's gone on for nearly 60 years. this year's parade was supposed to mark a return to normalcy since covid canceled the tradition last year. but what was supposed to be joyous is now a source of pain. a holiday celebration in waukesha, wisconsin, took a tragic turn sunday when an suv plowed through a parade. >> it was absolute chaos. people screaming. and i immediately ran downstairs outside of my apartment, and i

could see kids just laying on the street, people putti>>eporte were hurt including some children. >> we'll not release information on fatalities at this time while we are working on notifying the family of the deceased. >> reporter: several cameras recorded the vehicle as it sped west on the parade route on main street. witness angela on -- oboyle said the vehicle didn't stop even after hitting marchers or spectators in different locations. >> it kept going all the way down the block to people's parked at the stoplight and continued through it. >> reporter: police recovered the vehicle a short time later and took its suspected driver into custody. the man is being described as a person of interest in the incident. >> this doesn't happen here. like i don't understand why. i really don't understand why. it's just kids having a good time for christmas, and then this suv comes barreling through. like why? >> reporter: a law enforcement official familiar with the early findings of the investigation told cbs news the driver may have been fleeing from the scene

of another crime. now that law enforcement source said it was possibly a knife fight that the person of interest was fleeing from. anne-marie? >> all right, elise preston in new york. thank you very much. well, the nation's airports and roads will be packed this week for the thanksgiving holiday. more than 53 million people are expected to travel, but concerns about covid have not gone away. lilia luciano reports. eporter: mons of lis, fl flights, and packed airports, in what's expected to be the biggest holiday travel period since the start of the pandemic. >> i think things are getting back to normal even with the spike. >> reporter: pent-up demand and the opening of borders are spurring travel. saturday two million flyers went through tsa checkpoints, but worker shortages and covid concerns are worrying some travelers. >> i'm nervous to be in the airport.

joins us to discuss potential surges in covid cases this winter and how to stay safe during the holiday season. we have an update on that missionary group kidnapped in haiti. an ohio-based church organization says two of the 17 members have been released. christian aid ministries said that the two members are safe and being cared for. no other information was released, however. the group is made up of 16 u.s. citizens and one canadian including five children. they were abducted by a gang last month. the fbi is hel han authitiereve and president biden's approval rating is taking a hit according to the latest cbs news poll. 56% disapprove of mr. biden, while 44% approve. people in the survey said that the economy is the issue that stands out the most. this comes as congress works to pass the "build back better" agenda. mr. biden's economic advisers say the measure will help fight rising inflation rates. but the gop is not convinced.

>> there's no question inflation is high, and it's affecting american consumers and affecting their outlook. >> this idea that we're going to spend $1.75 trillion but trust us, it's not going to cost you anything, nobody buys that. >> the house passed the president's social spending bill on friday. it's now in the hands of the senate where democrats can't afford to lose a single vote. closing arguments will begin today in the trial of three men accused of killing ahmaud arbery. all three are charged with murder. travis mcmichael, who fired the shots that killed arbery, said he acted in self-defense. arbery was gunned down as he was jogging in a georgia neighborhood last february. the defendants say that they suspected him of burglary and were attempting a citizens arrest. and the mystery about a missing chinese tennis player has taken a new turn. images were released over the weekend of peng shuai who had not been publicly seen in weeks after accusing a former senior

government official of sexually assaulting her. but there are still questions about her safety. here's tom hanson. >> reporter: chinese tennis star peng shuai is seen smiling ear to ear in this image from a video call with the international olympic committee. the ioc says peng told them she's safe and well and asked for her privacy. china released its own version of proof showing peng at a youth tournament in beijing sunday, signing autographs for young fans and posing for pictures. until this weekend, no one had publicly seen or heard from peng in weeks after she accused a former communist party official those alleonkly ulting her. >> these latest images that the chinese government is putting out, they're trying to pretend everything is okay. >> reporter: another video posted saturday appears to show the former number-one doubles player having dinner with her coach and friends. the women's tennis association has threatened to pull out of tournaments in china over peng's

"usa today" reports that the uncle of jacob blake led a march through kenosha, wisconsin. dozens gathered in the city's downtown area yesterday during a protest called "reimagine kenosha." they followed the route kyle rittenhouse took the night he shot three people during a

protest over the shooting of jacob blake, a black man killed by a white police officer. >> if anybody deserves civil liberties, they were abused in this case by a caucasian young man who was 17 years old. we deserve those rights. >> the jury on friday acquitted rittenhouse in last year's shooting. the "associated press" says about 80 people ransacked a nordstrom near san francisco, the large-scale theft happened saturday in walnut creek, california. authorities say the suspects, some were wearing masks and wielding crow bars, swarmed the high-end department store. they were seen carrying out merchandise as they fled in dozens of cars. police arrested three people, but a majority of the suspects got away. and "people" magazine says joe exotic was transferred to a north carolina medical facility after his aggressive cancer diagnosis. the "tiger king" star was originally supposed to be transferred from a federal

support to loosen bank regulations and climate change inaction. the other leading candidate is lael brainard who's a member of the board of governors. vaccine requirements are halted at walt disney world in florida. the company's policies on pause after the governor signed a bill last week banning companies from mandating all employees get vaccinated. the law allows employees to choose exemptions including health or religious reasons, pregnancy, or already recovered from the virus. companies could be fined up to $50,000 for violation if they break the state law. and a recent lego project is no child's play. a team of 12 people built a toyota land cruiser using 440,000 bricks. they spent nearly 2,700 hours working on the sculpture which has the same dimensions as the reality thing. it's on display in dubai. it's one of the largest models even constructed in the united arab emirates.
