the temperatures are relatively warm in the low 50s out there now. the one spot that is reading visibility down below a mile is fairfield. and that is where we have the densing if advisory. the entire -- dense fog advisory. the entire central valley has it. once you work towards solano valley, that is where you encounter it. the fog burns off by late morning. a few clouds and day time highs into the low and mid-60s. back to you now. >> thank you, darren. the omnicron variant is detected in alameda county. he's more on how it made its way here this morning with da lin. >> reporter: i talked to a woman who knows the infected people. they feel sorry and bad about what happened. they did not wear a mask at the indoor event. she said her infected friends are doing okay and recovering from mild symptoms. a joyous occasion turned into a superspreader event. health officials say the wedding took place in wisconsin last saturday. 12 east bay residents came back

infected. five of them with the omnicron variant. one of them had returned from international travel before attending the wedding. health officials report one is a berkeley resident and 11 life in alameda county. all of them vaccinated. most of them got the booster and none of them hospitalized. >> the vaccines are doing what they're intended to do, which is to prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death. we know that they are imperfect. >> reporter: dr. another our ryangold is the division chair of epidemiology at uc berkeley. he said, they don't know if it's more transmessible or make people sicker. researchers need more time and data. he predicts more holiday gatherings will locally lead to bad outcomes. >> unfortunately, we're going to see a fair bit of covid this winter. hospitals will be stretched thin and it's going to create problems now of the same magnitude as last winter. i certainly hope not. >> reporter: those three

vaccinated friends enjoying an outdoor meal said omnicron won't change their holiday plans. partly because they paid for their flights. >> i will be going to visit my mom in florida. and she is older. so, it's, i can't skip two years in a row. >> they plan to get tested once they get back and plan to quarantine if i have to for a few days until my test results come back. i plan to double mask in florida, even if i'm the only per. >> reporter: wonder find out if the remaining serve people have the omnicron variant. in berkeley, i'm da lin, kpix 5. this morning, we're learning about a covid outbreak at a school in marin county. the school district said a family sent there 2 children to school knowing that one this tested positive for the virus. this happened at neil cumninfs elementary school. the total of eight kids got the virus. three of the cases are believed to be school-based transmission. the county public health officer said that this could

have been prevented if the parent his just followed the protocol. >> this is a violation, object, of just basic, basic ethics, but it's a violation of law and that there is an order in place that people who are infected with covid-19 do isolate for ten days. if they're known to be exposed to someone in most cases, they need to quarantine. >> school officials say it doesn't appear that any of the children who contracted the virus had significant symptoms last month. thankfully, none were hospitalized. >> a live look at sfo. starting on monday, all international travelers heading to the u.s. will have to show proof of a negative covid test within 24 hours of departure. that rule applies to everyone. doesn't matter if you're vaccinated or not. the proof of having recovered from covid the past 90 days will be accepted. >> stay with kpix for continuing coverage of the coronavirus and more information on vaccines and how to find booster shots.

check our guide on www.kpix.com. the family of kevin nasheda is speaking out. he was a former police officer and security guard for members of the media. he was killed in oakland while working as a security guard. oakland leaders new trying to address the rise in violent crimes and killings in the city. kpix 5's kenny choi breaks down where city leaders stand on pushing for more officers on the street and what kevin's family is asking for. >> he still giving, even though he's not here. >> reporter: nine days have passed since kevin nashida was fatally shot on the streets of oakland working as a guard protecting a tv news crew. >> he didn't deserve this. he was retired. he was just, you know, looking to stay busy and, you know, we wish he could come home. >> reporter: the homicide count reached 129. the mayor and east oakland council members reid and taylor are pushing hard to add more officers by spending 5.8

million, a move they say, would help fill 60 vacant positions and get the total number of officers above 730, which the city council has signed off on. >> there is nothing progressive about unbridled gun violence. >> i am glad to see more of a ground swell of support for our officers and our resources. >> reporter: council member shang tao who is running for mayor proposes 50,000 sipping bonuses for officers who join opdj. this is a public emergency right now that we're going through. it truly does feel like every day we're experiencing's new senseless tragedy. >> reporter: of about his death, nashida made sure his organs would be donated to give life to others. >> he just always over the top and just -- it's something you love about him. you can always depend on him. >> reporter: he remindd his wife, son and daughter to persevere through life's low of the moments by saying in japanese, gaman. >> i would tell him, okay, all right. you know, and it made me

stronger in any situation that we were in. i am going to remember gaman and to stay strong for him. >> that was kenny choi reporting. the nashida family hopes witnesses come forward with any information or videos that may have captured the suspects. oakland police identified the suspect vehicle as a white acura sedan. they believe the model year is between 2004 and 2008. this morning, the parents of a teen suspect in a deadly shooting in michigan are now under arrest. the police caught up with james and jennifer crumply this morn -- crumbly early this morning in detroit. the prosecutor charged the par wants with involuntary manslaughter and they're,expected to be arraigned later today. they allegedly bought a gun on black friday and made it available to their 15-year-old son ethan, who is accused of opening fire this week at oxford high school and killing four students and wounding seven others. a video of a brazen burglary in broad daylight.

this is the 61 at a jewelry store. two armed thieves made off with everything in a matter of minutes. it happened around the corner from the sacramento county sheriff's office. the owner believes the suspects were in the store earlier in the day and came back to rob them. >> a longtime san jose business owner closed the doors for good saying he doesn't want to become the next victim of a wave of smash-and-grabs. denny ryan owns a shoe and clothing store called kicks in san jose. this week, he announced his decision to a large following on instagram. he said he is closing because of the recent spike in retail robberies across the bay area. and he's friends with some of the south bay business owners who have already been victimized. >> definitely sad for me to see that stuff. i don't wish that upon anyone. it's been very hard for me to see some of the guys dealing with that stuff. it's been going on everywhere, you know, and it can happen to any of us. we have been fortunate this far, and, you know, i think again, it was the smart of the decision for us.

deconstruction project along i- 80 could slow down. and the freeway will be completely shut down at green valley road and fairfield at 11:00 p.m. crews are tearing down an old connector bridge no longer in use. and that i hope to have that done by 9:00 tomorrow morn. and. let's get you ready to get outside. there is a dense fog advisory for solano county. doesn't mean you won't encounter some patchy fog and looking at current temperatures out there. the numbers in the he to mid- 50s for the most part and that is 53 in oakland right now. 52 in san jose. 50, petaluma. the numbers are relatively warm for this time of the day. we have seen the numbers go down in the upper 30s by this point in the morning this tool of the year and the visibility for fairfield to 0.32. that is the area we'll have to cop anon and that is where the dense fog advisory stays into effect until noon today and they may have to extend it until tomorrow. if each the way it plays out,

we don't get rid of the mid- level clouds overhead. for most of the day and we going to let this mr. i through until 2:00 in the afternoon and -- this apply through until 2:00 in the afternoon. plan on a relatively gray day today and day time highs underneath the clouds will only get into the low 60s. 62 for san jose. 62, palo alto. 59, fremont and we'll see the numbers warm into the mid-60s and spot north bay valleys, we see a similar story here and low 60s. although we will have a few upper 50s across parts of the east bayshoreline and up with we're into the north bay valleys, we'll see temperatures in the mid-60s and into the pacific to see if there are any storms out there, there are. that one looks good right there. that is going to get pulled away to our north and that is the one behind that one of the we have to look at the long-

range forecast. and that is on thursday, which is not that long-range anymore. and that shows up in the seven- day forecast. and there is raabable confidence where you will have a weak system move through northern california. and we won't get a lot of rain out of this. we'll get some rain and when who look at the big picture view to show use what the accumulated rainfall looks like between now and then and thursday, we have a couple hundreds of an inch of rain here and it looks like a better rain maker and he elevation snow. by thursday and you have to start somewhere. that is our first system that has a chance to bring rain. and rain, not a lot. lot stuff and more details on the timing of it as we're closer to it. and lot keep an eye on yet the next thousand oaks hours to make sure that the potential for the rain holds together at all and seven aft for our micro climates show the same story.

countries have reported at least one case of the new variant. several mild cases of that variant first detected in south africa have popped up here in california and in other states. and this morning, the white house covid response team is calling for calm. >> we're, quipped and prepared to fight the omnicron variant head on. 99.9% of cases in the country right now are from the delta variant. >> concerns this morning following the five new cases of the variant discovered in alameda county and they're linked to a recent wedding and all of the patients are fully vaccinated with mild symptoms. here's more on the efforts in southern california to stop the spread. >> reporter: l.a. county saw the first case of the ohmin i crown this week when i pardon me travelling to lax from south africa tested positive. health officials are stepping up their efforts to fight the virus with an optional and free rapid covid testing site for

international flight arrivals at lax. she was one of the first parents to test at the new lax covid testing site. >> i think that is a very good issue in and that is why i did it immediately. >> getting vaccinated or boosted is the number one thing you can do to prevent catching covid or catching this virus and spreading it to others. >> reporter: officials at john wayne airport are also offering covid-19 activities kits to incoming international passengers to help stop the spread of the virus. another big concern that surface side being reinfected. scientists say that omnicrown is at least three time -- omnicron is three toys more likely to cause re-infect than previous coronavirus variants. epidemiologist dr. ann said just because you may have previously contracted covid-19 does not mean you can't get the virus again as the new variant is more contagious. >> we're also understanding that people who have been vaccinated and have no the been

-- are at great risk of getting infected. so, you can vaccinate. the thing to do is get the booster as soon as you can. a battle to wear a mask suggests having holiday, vents outdoors and have -- events outdoors and have guests contest it before gathering. a live look at the white house now. a controversial immigration policy put in place by president trump is about to start up again under president biden. as cbs correspondent skyler henry reports, the biden administration is moving ahead with the program, despite objections to it. >> the white house said president biden remains opposed to the trump-era migrant protection protocols program, where migrants were forced to remain in mexico while their asylum cases were processed in u.s. courts. >> deeply flawed. that is why we stopped enrolling individuals in the program on day one and subsequently issued a memorandum in june terminating the program. >> reporter: the supreme court

upheld a federal government's ruling that the program was improperly shut down and ordered it to be started again. something the bound know administration now said it's prepared to do. >> our view of the program has not changed. we're working to implement under the court order. >> reporter: the court ruling said the program could only start back up again if mexico agreed to participate. immigrant rights advocates said the administration could have done more to avoid resuming it. >> and we think the biden administration could have pushed mexico a little bit harder to find some ways to either stop the program from going back into effect or to find ways to make it singca wantly better -- significantly better than it was before. >> the rules could resume as early as monday with changes. the government will have to provide covid-19 vaccines to migrants waiting for their hearing. it will take six months and provide better access to legal council. >> and there is no way to make any humane policy humane. the reality is that migrants

will continue to suffer from violence and danger when sent back to mexico and will continue to be unable to obtain the lawyers that they need to be able to have a fair shot at winning their case for asylum. >> reporter: during the first iteration of remain in mexico, 1% of migrants were granted asylum. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. hiring slowed last month in the u.s. employers added 210,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dropped hovering at 4.2% and as more people join the workforce. weijia jiang has reaction from the white house. >> reporter: on wall street, stocks slid in response to the latest jobs reports, which offered mixed signals about the u.s. economy. a weaker than expected jobs number. also, a drop in unemployment bringing it to the low of the point since the start of the pandemic in march of 2020. president biden who is nursing a cold, celebrated the

progress. >> we're looking at the sharpest one-year decline on unemployment ever. simply put, america, america's back to work. and our jobs recovery is going very strong. >> reporter: americans are still facing sky-high prices on everything from groceries to cars to furniture with inflation at its high of the rate in 31 years. >> families are anxious. anxious about the cost of living. the economy more broadly. they're still uncertain and i want you to know i hear you. >> reporter: one sector of the economy that continues to struggle hiring new workers is the hospitality industry. last month, it added 23,000 jobs. but it's still down 1.3 million prepandemic positions. >> businesswise, we're up almost 40% over last year. >> reporter: the problems for the florida restaurant owner is that his staff is down by 10%. so his employees are forced to

all of the snow is machine made, but skiers and snowboarders didn't seem to mind. meantime, there is something you don't hear every day. a blizzard warning in he hi known to locals as the kona low. the it's creating interesting weather. hawaii's big island is expected to see more than a foot of snow and the winds could gust up to 100 miles per hour. this is the first snow for the big islands since 2016. and in light of how little snow there is here in the sierra, that is an interesting juxtaposition. not unheard of there and that volcano is pretty high. and that camera is into the city and you can look off towards the distance there and see the lights of the bay bridge. and it's hanging out over much of the bay area and that is all yet is, a low cloud and not on the ground cloud and who don't have a widespread area of fog

out there and it's relatively warm and there is fog in fairfield. you can see the visibility reading there. down to 0.1. that tells you can see a 0.1 of a mile down the road. if you look at the fog advisory, that is solano county. everyone else is doing okay. and that staying in effect until 91 today, to watch how long it takes for the stuff to melt away. we're going to let it play to 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon. it's never entirely gone just like yesterday. we're going to keep the low clouds hanging around for a good part of today. we'll clear it out of the north bay valleys, you will get sunshine here and clear it here. you will get sunshine here. in the heart of the bay issue it's staying gray. into the afternoon and evening, clouds rebuild gan and temperatures stay cool because of that and numbers are 10 degrees cooler than where we were when we left off at the start of the week. low 60s for the inland valleys of the east bay and numbers in

the upper 60s for the east bayshore line and low 60s for some of our warmer valleys and mid-60s into mendocino and lake county. the storms look impressive in the pacific. the aim has been off. that one misses us. the next one comes in behind that right there. gives us a chance of rain on thursday. this is not a major storm. not going to be impressive rain. but at least it's a chance for? rain by the time we get there. if we put it on to the accumulated rainfall to watch the showers come together for thursday, maybe 0.005 of an inch of rain and gets us ahead to thursday and that is about 0.005 of an inch of rain. we'll take it. showing you the rain on thursday. the day tom highs may warm know for the north bay valleys by the time we're into material and it's not a significant change. if we pull up san francisco, oakland and san jose, we see the same story on here for temperatures.
