reporting confirmed cases of the omicron variant. it is now in at least 17 states, but most of the symptoms have been mild in vaccinated people. health officials say that there's not enough evidence to know what to expect from the variant. laura podesta is in new york with the latest on this. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. a big question is how transmissible is this new variant, how quickly or easily can others catch it. with that and other unknowns surrounding omicron, the u.s. is taking new steps to stop the spread. as of this morning, all travelers coming from the u.s. must undergo a covid-19 test within 24 hours of their departure. previously they had to be tested within three days of their flight. >> definitely another challenge that's coming up in the way for travelers. >> reporter: the tightened restrictions come as the omicron variant continues to spread. at least 17 states have reported omicron-related infections, many of the confirmed cases found in vaccinated people who reported

having mild symptoms. >> we've got to be careful before we make any determinations that it is elderly severe or really doesn't cause any severe illness comparable to delta variant. but thus far, the signals are a bit encouraging regarding the severity. >> reporter: experts say it's still crucial to determine if omicron is more transmissible than other variants. >> even if it is a mild disease, it's important that we still act fast now to take measures to control its spread. even if we have a large number of cases that are mild, some of those individuals will need hospitalizations, they will need to go into icu, and people will die. >> reporter: omicron's arrival has coincided with a spike in new covid cases, up 19% in just two weeks. the number of new infections tops 108,000 a day. the cdc says 99% of those cases are caused by the delta variant with unvaccinated people remaining the most at risk.

a new study indicates men spread coronavirus particles more so than women or children. researchers at colorado state university ran a study focused on tracking the spread of covid-19 in performing arts settings, and anne-marie, singing apparently spread more particles than talking, and the louder the singing the more e particles that were spread. >> so much for those christmas carols. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. geez. the parents of a teenager accused of shooting and killing four students at a michigan high school remain in the same jail facility as their son. james and jennifer crumbley were arrested on saturday. the couple was found in a detroit art studio after being charged with involuntary manslaughter. they are accused of buying the handgun used in last week's shooting by their teenage son and ignoring warning signs that he was planning the attack. meantime, a third party will investigate the shooting. >> i don't know what anybody will feel safe sending their

kids back to school until they know exactly what happened here. >> the superintendent told parents a teacher saw crumbley making concerning drawings and statements just hours before the shooting. his parents were called in, and counselors concluded that he did not intend to harm himself or others. president biden will hold a video call with russian president vladimir putin tomorrow. their conversation comes as tensions between the u.s. and russia escalate over a russian troop build-up on the ukrainian border. the white house says mr. biden will share american concerns about russia's military activities in the region and reaffirm u.s. support for the sovereignty of ukraine. and this morning, the nation is honoring former senator bob dole. he died yesterday at the age of 98 after a battle with lung cancer. dole is being remembered for a life of service. major garrett has more. i accept your nomination to

[ cheers ] >> reporter: bob dole was the last presidential candidate who served in world war ii, and in the '96 campaign, he said ameica needed more of the greatest generation's grit and values. >> and i know because i was there and i have seen it, and i remember -- >> reporter: it didn't work. baby-boomer president bill clinton painted dole as a fixture of the past and easily won a second term. growing up in russell, kansas, dole was a star athlete in high school and joined the army as a college freshman. he suffered grievous wounds in italy that would cost him the u.s. of one arm. neighbors raised money to pay for several surgeries and later sent him to congress. >> when i needed help, the people of russell helped. and i think -- [ applause ] >> reporter: gerald ford put dole on the ticket in 1976. in the vice presidential debate dole blamed democrats for wars on their watch.

water at pearl harbor navy. nearly 1,000 military households have complained about their tap water smelling like fuel, and there have been physical ailments including stomach cramps and vomiting. >> how can i possibly, possibly ever trust anything that any of you present to me and my family? >> the navy says it will start conducting flushes of clean water to start the restoration process. it has also started distributing bottled water. there's no timeline on when the tap water will be safe to use again, though. and "the washington post" says two hippos in belgium have tested positive for covid. the first known cases in the species. officials at the belgian zoo say they've been placed in isolation after being infected with the virus. it's possibly the first time

top three. on the cbs "money watch" the head of instagram is set to testify before congress, and you can own the fonz's motorcycle from "happy days." diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning. this week investors will get updated numbers on inflation in america when the labor department releases its consumer price index. meantime, the three major indices ended in the red friday after a volatile week with concerns over the omicron variant weighing. the dow fell 59, the nasdaqp 50. for the first time the head of instagram will testify on capitol hill this week. he will appear before a senate panel on wednesday for a hearing on protecting kids on line. instagram has been criticized for its negative effect on teens and young users. last month he said instagram is dataing ways for parents to control how much time their kids spend on the app.

target is officially in the holiday spirit by extending store hours. the retailer said most locations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to midnight from now until december 23rd. target says it will be open on christmas eve but will close at 8:00 p.m., and the chain will be closed on christmas day. you may remember target expanded its holiday hours last year, as well, but started one week later. some classic memorabilia from the sitcom "happy days" is hitting the auction block. henry winkler is selling jams from his acting career including the complete fonz outfit, the jeans, jacket, and boots are expected to feature fetch up to $80,000 this week and motorcycle is also for sale. auctioneers believe the 1949 triumph trophy will go from between $80,000 to $120,000. winkler said most of the reeds will go to a nonprofit designed to help reunite separated families at the border. anne-marie? >> that's really -- my recollection of the fonz was the

former senator and presidential candidate bob dole. he died yesterday at the age of 98 after a battle with lung cancer. dole is being remembered for a life of service first on the battlefields of world war ii, and then for his leadership in congress. president biden called him a statesman like few in our history. some 25 million fir trees will be cut and sold this holiday season. for the farmers who grow and sell them, it's more than a business. it means being part of a time hype honored christmas tradition, and there's a supply chain problem caused by drought. our minneapolis station wcco reports. we're starting to really get things in shape. >> reporter: 'tis the season at hanson tree farm. their busiest time. year has just begun. and there's plenty of work to do. >> we have 40 acres here in ramsey. 25 is in christmas trees. >> reporter: brothers david and mark run the farm which has been a family business for 70 years.

they have about 10,000 christmas trees ready to be cut. but this year will be different. prices will be up slightly due to drought. >> it was brutal. the trees this year didn't grow as much. the big trees. it was really brutal is the word. >> reporter: ideally during the growing season their trees would get about an inch of rain a week. the hansons say they got just one inch of rain over a three-month stretch. as a result, about 10% of the trees they planted the past two years were lost. this balsam fir shows the impact the drought had on tree farms. it was planted two years ago, but because it didn't survive the summer, it will have to be replaced. >> this was the worst i'd ever seen. if we didn't have irrigation, basically i don't think any of the trees we planted this year would have survived. >> reporter: they're worried the loss could lead to a christmas tree shortage in future years. still, last year was a record year, and they're expecting more of the same this season. >> now is a good time to do it. any of the first species hold their needle, so that's not an
