live from the cbs bay studios, this is kpix5 news. bay area reservoir is about to get a much needed used. we are tracking a series of storms next acted to hit the bay area. the first case of omicron detected in santa clara county. what it means for all of us during the holidays. thank you so much for joining us. let's start with a quick check of our weather. >> we can see the rain approaching california. it is far off the coast and does not get here until 9:00 at 10:00 tonight. today, it is clouds in the afternoon. for the morning, it is cold. the northbay is 32.

mid-to upper 30s. it is cold everywhere and cold enough for a freeze warning in the northbay that stays in effect until 11:00 this morning. temperatures in the mid-to upper 50s. back over to you. having rain in the forecast is good news. we are in the middle of a drought and we will need many more storms just like this to really replenish our reservoirs. wilson walker has more. >> northern california finally about to get around a beneficial rainfall. a long and discouraging break since the last one. >> they were up for to it as the storm door opening. >> marin county is cleaning up after the last one. they are clearing up fairfax road that has been closed since

the late october storm. it is badly needed. marin county added new restrictions and sonoma's waterfall is low. >> we are hoping that we can get this weather pattern changed enough so that we get a regular series of storms. >> that is what it will take no matter where you live >> we monitor up by shasta lake. >> it is part of the central valley project looking at reservoirs far below historic, historical averages. >> we have about four or six of the storm systems that will help us fill our reservoirs and water systems. >> if you want to try to be

>> it only took four seconds. this man gets out of the car with tinted windows, reaches over the barrier and snatches the woman's purse. police say moments later the victim discovered her car, parked around the corner was also stolen. >> two of her friends came over and obviously, she was kind of hysterical. her purse was taken and her car was taken and you have to think about her safety as well. >> sean dolan who works as a beverage director across the street provided this security video to the victim. >> it did come close to hitting them. >> you would think that someone would have seen him. >> i saw the commotion

afterwards. it was pretty intense. >> it is an opportunist. they see these opportunities and they put one and one hels safe inthe marina. al >> a lot of people get comfortable especially in a dining environment. you've still got to keep, especially outdoor dining, you've got to keep your belongings close to you. >> and employ across the street says there is typically a happy police presence in the marina. oakland police are looking for two suspects that carjacked a ups driver. the truck was later found on partridge avenue and many packages were missing. police would like to hear from anyone who saw anything

suspicious. police responded to a 911 call with reports of shots being fired on hummingbird drive. that call came in on friday and when police arrived they say the suspect was armed with a rifle and had barricaded himself inside of a home and were shooting at cars and houses. he also shut down one of their drones >> after we made contact, over the course of several hours the suspect repeatedly fired shots from inside the house and in the direction of officers. >> police say the man appeared to set the garage on fire as he led. once confronted by swat officers, the suspect was shot and pronounced dead on the scene. a dramatic spike in

coronavirus cases likely caused by thanksgiving gatherings. what does this mean for christmas or new year's. we spoke with county leaders about what you should do. >> we are two weeks away from christmas eve when millions of families are expected to gather. health experts say that we should not let our guard down when it comes to covid-19. christmas in the park in san jose is just a kickoff to what is expected to be a memorable holiday for ruth. >> last year she spent the holiday alone after being exposed to someone with covid. >> this year, the omicron variant is looming over christmas and new shears. >> task, then a lake, and

stolen during smash and grab properties. we have been tracking the trail of stolen goods and how retailers are fighting back. >> reporter: shattered glass and thousands of dollars in goods being hustled out in stores have followed the indelible images of 2021. where does all of that stolen merchandise end up? we have tracked some to bay area flea markets and swap meets. the vast majority goes to online marketplaces like facebook and amazon. >> they are able to establish a business by going online and hiding behind bogus accounts. that is why and how they are able to sell and offload this much of stolen goods. >> those marketplaces are not required to verify and save information on sellers or share it with law enforcement if it

is connected with organized crime. retailers are taking their fight to capitol hill and trying to get legislation push through congress. >> it will guarantee that these high-volume sellers that are stealing all of these goods will have to be verified by the marketplaces and the seller will have to give the consumer the information. >> some have signed onto the bill that has bipartisan support. >> they have joined the fight to support the inform consumers that. >> facebook has been very quiet and refused to come out either way on this legislation. they are not up on capitol hill pushing for this regulation. >> inflation is making it more expensive to get everything on your holiday shopping list. the rising price of everything

is making some shoppers think twice. >> newly released data shows the rate of inflation hit nearly a 40 year high. shoppers are thinking harder before making that next purchase. they drove into san francisco union square for holiday shopping. >> have you noticed the prices going up? >> incredibly. it is really sad. >> the biggest jump since 1982. >> if you think this will be up months, it is not. >> from clothing to cars in every day items at the grocery store. the cost of beef and bacon is up more than 20%. meanwhile, the biden

administration expects prices to decrease because of lower shipping costs. >> it will mean that more goods can be shipped and that there should be more on the shelves to stock and the cost of goods will come down >> shoppers can only help that downward trend will continue. in san francisco, kpix5 . compared to three months ago the cost of shipping a container has dropped by about 25%. we've got a busy couple of days coming our way in the weather world. let's track where the rain is now. no doubt you have heard that there's some rain coming. there will be a lot of rain. the storm situated off of the far northwest coast will take a while for that rain to get here. it does not rain today.

it will rain tonight by 10:00 and that's how long it will take for those showers way up there to work their way down here. we will watch it on future cast. that is a very well put together storm. you can see and organize line of rain that extends well out into the pacific. there is a lot of it. let's come in for a closer view. there is our band of rain. we will bring that aren't sure. and now tomorrow morning in the predawn hours. we are seeing some of the best of the rain in the north bay. it will work its way across the heart of the bay and by sunday afternoon, better rain from the golden gate southward and it will work its way down through the south bay. there will be breaks as we get sunday night and into monday.

another line of organize rain will get us into monday afternoon. there will be more rain coming our way after that. we will get a better idea for why it will take a few days. if we look at the total rainfall just for the weekend, this is all day saturday through all day sunday. we've got over an inch for some of our north bay communities and about .5 inches for other locations. that is not where it ends. you can see the size of this storm. it goes all the way through sunday. as we get into monday, look how much more is out here. it will rotate back up into the bay area. we will get more specific on the details and timing on monday. that will likely change. the next 24 hours all the way

through sunday is where we have a higher degree of confidence and that timing on the rain, you can go to the bank on that. this will be a significant snow maker in the sierra nevada. and if you're getting ready to step outside, it is cold. this is probably the headline in the forecast. there is a freeze warning in the north bay. it is in the mid 30s and down into the low 30s and upper 20s in the north bay where we have a freeze warning and place. we will warm back up in the mid- to upper 50s. no rain today and then you can see your seven day forecast keeps the ring going all the way across it. we will clear things out by the end of this next coming week. it looks the same for our microclimate. we will focus on the timing of that rain for sunday in a lot more detail coming up in the next 30 minutes. >> so tonight into tomorrow and

let's start this half-hour with a quick check of our weather. the rain is way up there. it does not start raining here until tonight. we have a good storm coming. for now, we will get you ready for saturday. mid-30s for just about everybody. it is freezing in the northbay valleys and that is where we've got a freeze warning. bundle up wherever you are. here is the forecast for the rest of today. mid-50s for daytime highs and plenty of rain for tonight and tomorrow. the snow season is off to a slow start. people in tahoe are hoping that winter will begin in earnest. we have the story. >> a beautiful friday dry up the hill on i-80.

let's play this forward throughout the day on sunday. this is in the predawn hours. it will march away across the bay area. by 1:30 we've got a well organized line of rain and that will work its way down to the south bay. that will basically cover sunday. it is good rain in the northbay. the northbay will get some of the best rain out of this compared to the rest of the bay area. for most of us, this is .5 inches of rain. it is not the end. on monday, another wave comes in kicking us into monday afternoon. we will look at that's coming up and just a second here but first let's cover the weekend. the rainfall for saturday night through sunday. we end up with 1.25 inches of rain and .5 for the rest of the

bay area. you can see why this does not end on monday afternoon. that is where it ended last. there is still a lot of rain out here that will rotate its way in through the remainder of monday night. a bit of a break here. another system on thursday comes in right there. the 7 day forecast will look busy with opportunities for rain. the big one will be sunday and monday and then on thursday. this means very good snow in the sierra. not only is it high amounts of snow falling and the mountains but the snow level down to 3500 feet. there is going to be another one of those likely needed on thursday but more on that as we get closer to it. if you're just about ready to

step out saturday morning, there is a freeze warning. mid-to upper 30s. it is cold enough for the northbay valley with a freeze warning until 11:00 this morning. we will go up into the mid-to upper 50s with plenty of clouds around. technically it rains today but were talking about nine or 10:00 at night. we've got rain on their all the way through thursday. the focus will be the sunday and monday rain and then that thursday storm. the timing will adjust a little, but it looks like a lot of rain. it is best to pull out more of the important time frames. and then as we take a look at our microclimates, it is the same story. it will be busy around here. it is like the last storm and we go a long time with nothing

after them and and read according to other firefighters. >> he causes his elves. >> he took over the toy drive 17 years ago and it has tripled from 100 barrels of tories to 350 barrels per year. all ofthmateo county. he oversees collections at dozens of locations from businesses and schools to fire stations. the new unwrapped toys are delivered to 15 nonprofits. they distribute groceries to up to 650 families per week. the executive director says over the years the toy drive has provided holiday presents for thousands of families.

>> as the need grows, he says that he keeps up with coordinating the massive project. he even built a website to get the word out. >> he is one of the most selfless people i have met. he has always been helpful for me personally, but for him to undertake this every year is no small task. in fact, he kept the toy drive going even though other nonprofits suspended there's last year because of covid. the fire captain in his team collected almost 300 barrels of toys in last year's socially distanced effort. >> i know a lot of families were out of jobs and not working. >> he grew up in a family with seven children and is committed for making the holidays bright for all those in need.

it expanded a block over to wellington place. homeowners and volunteers transformed large pieces of plywood into some of the most beloved cartoon characters >>rert: volunteers collect donations that go to five local charities. >> there is so much that divides us, we have something to be positive and not be afraid and we can celebrate. >> reporter: last year it was drive through only. this year families can walk through and be up close again. and now they are passing on the tradition. starting on saturday until the end of this year, volunteers will pass out free candy canes from 6:00 until 10:00.
