we'll warm into the low 50s. it will be sunshine today. 50s will still be cool. we're going to be on the low side of 50s. we're going to look to next yok's chance of rain and also go into how long we're going to stay this cold in the mornings. back over to you. >> thank you. and it's happened again. another shooting at a crowded mall it happed in the east bay at concordival mall. someone opened fire at the mall and shot a man. kpix 5s around rowa na can, ano has more. >> okay, we're hiding in the back of the store. we locked everything down, but there was a shooting. >> reporter: michelle brigham got the call every mother fears. her daughter was working inside the mall when she heard a sound of gonefire. >> signed like a pop, an automatic. we were like what do we do? >>you jade bell ran to the door and locked it until shoppers came knocking, begging for help. >> i opened the door.

i was like get in, get in and there were multiple people flooding in through our doors. >> reporter: employees and shoppers hit until they got the all-clear from police. officers from the concord police department had to make sure there was not an act of shooter inside the mall. one man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his stomach. that were relieved no one else was hurt. >> was shaken and calm and i am cpr shirtified. >> reporter: in the midst of chaos, there was calm as employees work together to ensure shoppers were safe. for those waiting outside for their loved ones, there was nothing but anxiety. >> she literally walked out and i was like -- you know, and i ran to my father. she's an adult and a child. my heart sank. >> reporter: andrea nakana, kpix 5. >> concord police are looking for the shooting suspects. they say, the wounded man was a good samaritan who was shot whole trying to help a robbery

victim. this morning, he is in stable condition. and this is a live look at oakland. the city is ready to put 2021 in the rearview mirror. they were plagued by crime and violence. oakland finished 2021 with the high of the homicide rate in 15 years. kpix 5s da len digs into the numbers and looks at what is about to change. >> reporter: when it comes to gun violence, this is a reminder that oakland is in a crisis. which one is -- represent as i homicide. so far this year, 134 killings. this is a snapshot from the last 15 years. the numbers taken from the city website and there are big increases the last few years, leading to 132 homicides in 2021. 2017 and 2018 saw the lowest

numbers. bothiarys with 75 homicides. 131 killings in 2012. in 2006, 148 people killed. let's break down the numbers geographically. police say the numbers are as of december 26th. lack merit, the center of the city. everything north of of the lake, rock lidge and pars of the oakland hills. 12 deaths and 46 shootings result in injuries and some had multiple vehicles. -- victims. downtown, west oakland. 17 people killed. at least 83 injuries. east oakland is the most dangerous part of town. 10 fohomicides. and at least 448 people shot. the deeper you go, the more shootings and killings. one more number. officers responded to 3300 shootings in oakland. think about it. 3300 shootings. what is more important than the numbers is how you feel. and many people say that they don't feel safe in oakland. why the increase in violence? officers say they see a lot

more guns in the streets. some people blame the early release of inmates. they also point to bail reform, releasing violent suspects on no cash bail. it turn things around, oakland is funding more police academies to fill vacancies. the police department is budgeted for 737 positions and right now, they're down to 692 officers. the city is nesting more money in operations cease fire. an intervention program providing high-risk individuals jobs and other alternatives to gun violence. in three weeks, the department will shift 48 officers to patrol in deep east oakland where most of the shootings on,cur. the hope is 2022 will be a much safer year. i'm da lin, kpix 5. increase to the 100 iron in addition to the 134 homicided investigated in 2021 by the oakland police department, there were five more homicides on oakland freeways falling

under the jurisdiction was chp. a police chase in the east bay ended in the san francisco bay. yet started early friday morning. the driver lead officers into oakland. at one point, the chp said the car stopped and a passenger tried to hide a bag with a gun inside. the driver and passenger ditched the car. officers arrested the driver after chasing him on foot and found the passenger hiding for a half hour. the family is sharing a message of thanks after the search was called off. rory angelotta was reported missing after he doesn't show up for kinner with friends. he said, going to go skiing first. the deputies ended the search on thursday and said it was doubtful he can have survived the severe weather fabook state from the family expressing their gratitude for everyone

helping to search for him. over six days, the sheriff's office said over 13,000 personnel hours devoted to the search. drivers, a heads up. the chps maximum enforcement is in effect. they're working to catch impaired drivers and speeders and violators through sunday night. tolls are going up on seven bay area bridges. this applies to the base, san mateo, dun bartop, richmond and martinez. the money will go to a long list ofm pro ofments. and still, the hook doesn't affect the golden gate bridge. many workers in the bay area are starting the new year with a raise. san jose and silicon valley are increasing the minimum wage. san jose workers will see their hourly rate go up to $16.20 an hour. in mountain view and sunnyvale, the minimum wage bumps up to

17:10. and palo alto increases to 16:45 and others $6.40 an hour. and there were no new year's eves fireworks in san francisco. the city sought to discourage people from gathering in large groups during a covid spike. in oakland, the science and space center closed down until january 15th. the annual balloon drop did no the happen with many similar events scrapped, people around the bay area did their best to adjust. people lined town go into a one- stop party shop in san francisco looking for decorations to make the most of an evening at home. >> first, it was frustrating because, you know, i had planned with my friends. you have to adopt and -- dat and it will be nice and more you want mat with family. >> all of the plans got canceled. we had two parties that we invited to other parties show invited to and they all got canceled. >> others say they planned all along to keep it small and stay in to welcome the arrival of the new year.

new year's tradition. east bay regional parks is warning about toxic mushrooms getting ready to sprout. a recent rainstorm will lead to more fungi and are warning pet owners about the death cap and western destroying angel. both have been popping up in local parks and contain toxic chemicals that can cause kidney failure within 24 hours of consumption. and with temperatures dropping into the 30s overnight, homeless advocates said, they needed to take action and help out thousands who sleep on the streets or in their cars in san jose. volunteers from three nonprofit organizations including hello angels handed out hot cocoa and blankets, sleeping bags and food to the unhoused. the city opened two warming centers because of the cold snap. it's in the enough, say homeless advocates and that there is only room for 60 people. we have a cold morning on

of any visibility issues and san jose, down to 6 miles and that is fine. the mornings will stay cold the next few days. and you will rebound quickly into next week. inland valleys, the numbers here climb into the mid- to upper 40s and into next week. temperatures rebounding to the bay. 50 by tuesday and the bigger picture view shows us the next system getting developed into the pacific. and watch that line of showers. sunday, monday, we have the next system here trying to bring us rain. we'll come in for a closer look at that and a better idea how likely that rain is going to get here. most is too far north and the showers fall apart on monday. now, and it's mainly monday morning, light showers into the

area. i am grad that everyone got out. -- glad that everyone got out. >> unbelievable when you look at the devastation that we don't have a list of 100 missing persons. i am hoping that is a miracle. >> and people at the home depot in uicodohad a shopping ulatst seven people were it injured in the fires. so far, there are no reports of deaths. covid is putting up a continuing strain in the airline industry with thousands of flights canceled nationwide. the faa said that air traffic controllers shortages could cause more cancellations. and it's adding to headaches for people trying to get home from holiday travels. the bay area bridge foes are going up. this applies to the bay, san mateo, richmond, car kin ease, antioch and have an easternian bridges and will go toward a

. for many, the start of a new year is a time for new beginnings. kpix 5s kiet do brings us a story of one man's fresh start 15 years in the making. >> reporter: it's a cold, rainy night here at the palo alto transit center and the start of bus route 22. about 10 years ago, we were the first to tell you that homeless people use bus 22 as a way to stay warm and dry. they still do. this holiday season, we ran into a man by the name of eric shantz who taught us that sometimes life and the universe works in mysterious ways. it's been called hotel 22. where $2.50 will get you a
