27 degrees for you guys. san jose, 34. all those locations have a freeze warning this morning. inland valleys of the north bay. everyone on purple here. up 580 and 680 and the south bay. but it is cold. we saw the numbers. we'll have a beautiful afternoon by the time we get to the daytime highs. we'll see numbers climb back into the low to mid-50s. it will start to get better tomorrow. i'm going to show you how the morning lows begin to climb out of the cellar beginning tomorrow morning, but it is by tuesday when they are much warmer. same time when we have a chance of rain. we'll look at both of those coming up in a few minutes. king tides are expected to cause more flooding in low- lying areas around the bay. they happen around the time of the winter solstice. kpix 5 showing us the scene along the san francisco waterfront. >> reporter: there were a lot

of people here choosing to enjoy the first day of 2022 in this sunny weather and whale many of them were not aware that the king tides were happening this weekend, they did notice some of the water that was still on the sidewalk hours after the high tide. at one particular location, you could fotis how much the water resaided in just a few hours revealing more of the steps that are here on the waterfront. >> while some people said it was an impressive site when you see the king tides in person, it is also concerning in terms of what it can mean for climate change and how it forecasts the changes happening here in bay area. >> every time you talk about this, climate change comes into the picture but we don't know specifically in contribute because in this case. >> it is happening in thailand. it is concerning. expe to on ay th >> reportertht

around 0 a.m. repoinfrancisco, kpix 5. and now to a bizarre scene out of texas. this past week it was raining fish. residents are saying they saw fish falling from the sky. >> i didn't know what to say. i just thought it was pretty cool. i started getting me a bucket and used them for fishing bait. >> that is awesome. this is a phenomenon known as animal rain when small water animals such as frogs, crab or fish are swept up into water spouts. they are face. they were in freezing temperatures. they were carrying employees of the tramway in the mountains overlooking the capital. the cables iced up and they used ropes to lower 21 people down to the ground. they ultimately used a helicopter to get them off the

mountain. one of those was marooned alone for more than 12 hours on a second ca >>a snow car extinguished a devastating wildfire that ripped flew several colorado neighborhoods. she spoke with families struggling to get back on their feet. >> reporter: finding the next steps seem impossible. when the unnajeh nable is in front of you. >> exactly. >> she doesn't know how to move forward for her family. >> he lost urge. >> reporter: her father-in- law's home is the standing anymore in the rock creek neighborhood. >> i'm surprised it is still smoking with how the weather turned. >> reporter: some of her neighbors were spared. >> i'm so glad yours made it. >> reporter: so much is unknown about the future, but michelle is hoping to find anything about the past. >> you still have to look even if you don't find anything.

roughly one of six people tested are in fact infected with the coronavirus. that is the bad news. but it is not the whole story. >> on average, it is a much milder disease. >> reporter: ucsf doctor said the recent uptick is largely caused by the omicron variant that spreads rapidly and readily but does not make people really sick. >> even a smaller proportion of a larger number of people getting very sick means our hospitals are on high alert. >> reporter: the good news so far he said is that hospitals are not yet overwhelmed. overrun with too many patients and too few beds, doctors and nurses to care for them. he says the vaccines while not perfect harus manage nabler doi wosay e vaccines

today. what has it been like? >> unfortunately our flight got cancelled. >> reporter: airlines are pitting the blame on winter weather and the highly contagious omicron variant affecting airport workers, over 1700 tsa agents out with covid. >> airlines did not see this new variant coming. if they can't go to work, how can airlines run the schedule that they sold to the public months ago? >> reporter: a flight attendant's union is hitting back against the cdc after the agency cubs the isolation time for covid infected workers from ten days to five after a positive result. >> the problem is that now we're adding more sick people into our ranks. we'll have more flight crew who are sick. happening today the unified school district will begin

distributing 30,000 test kits. they want to make sure students and staff arco individual free before they return to school tomorrow. families can pick those up at the high schools. parents can go through the drive through between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and test their kids to get a test result. also, today, a fun and educational incentive to get vaccinated. san jose's children's discovery museum is giving prepasses to get a booster. the walk up clinic is open for ages five and up. >> in a developing story, san francisco p police are trying to someone who snatched the french bulldog. they were walking and the two were con fronted by a suspect, a thief escaped. it was a silver chrysler 200 and they have identified part of the license plate.

the dog's owners are offering a 10,000 dollar reward for frenchie's safe return. they are hoping we can bring rosy back home safely. a busy new year's eve for officers throughout the state. they made 263 dui arrests on new year's eve, an 8% jump from the same time last year. they are not done yet. it is still in effect and continues until midnight tonight. chopper 5 captured video of fireworks. they didn't issue citations last night. they canceled the big new year's eve fireworks at the water from the because of covid and there are new rules in place for labeling genetically modified foods put in place for 2022. now foods will be labeled as having been bao engineered instead. in most cases consumers will be able to find out more

can't wait. >> be positive and happy new year. all right. it is cold out there on this second day of 2022. this is the coldest day of this winter season, so far. it is the coldest day of the next seven. there will be a big improvement in the early part of the week but right now, we're at the bottom. this is about as cold as it will get. i'll show you what those numbers look like. clear numbers over san jose. >> how did we do this? part of the reason is the air is particularly dry out there right now. we have been importing colder air obviously but also low humidity with it and low humidity is able to insulate far less than any air mass that has a little more humidity to work with like a blanket. if we had cloud as head, won't have this issue. clear case, low humidity.

temperatures down to freezing. san san jose, 34 degrees. it is 27 right now santa rosa. number in concord, 29. livermore, 29. those are the locations where the freeze warnings are in place until 9:00. so it is those north bay areas, inland valleys of the east by and south bay. >> it is cold. cold enough that you want to bundle up and the primary concern on a morning like this on that line, it says hypothermia is a risk for vulnerable populations, e anybody who doesn't have a place to get indoors where there is heating, warm blankets, it is a risk on a morning like this. that is the top item to keep in mind. plus, pets, pipes and plants. the afternoon is fine. we will be in the mid 50s. no fog.

we covered that. it is just midlevel clouds. santa rosa at 3 miles. we're doing okay. >> the north bay valleys, down into the upper 20s today. look at the big improvement into monday and tuesday. tuesday is like a spike in heat, mid-40s. concord, livermore, look at your jump by tuesday. sunday is the coldest. still cold tomorrow morning on monday but better than this. same story in the heart of the bay. mid-30s now. didn't get to freezing in some spots. still 30s. 50 morning low by thursday. we're changing the air mass. look at this in the pacific. you would think a cold storm from the gulf of alaska could make it colder and most times that is what happens but in this case, we're going to pull in warmer air in front of it. that is how the storms work into that flow. that will help. then the clouds overnight are going to be the biggest factor

that help. and we'll also start to increase the humidity in the air a little more. that is how we get out of the freeze ram. room. >> there is also rain with it. sunday night throughout monday, light showers. a cloudy day, light showers throughout the morning into the afternoon and evening. there won't bow a lot to this. it will be scattered bit it will last long enough because it doesn't clear out until we get past like tuesday morning, so late sunday night through tuesday morning there is a chance for rain. then we pick up maybe a quarter inch in the north bay. a tenth of an inch for most other locations. not just rain here for monday. we'll get more snow in the sierra and most at the same time frame. the winter weather advisory goes monday morning to tuesday morning. slippery roads, reduced visibilities. chains will be required.

half a foot is nothing compared to the last storm, but still enough to cause travel concerns on i-80. look at the snow tuesday morning, down to 3500 feet both on 80 and 50. that will get to pines but not on koufax. in the seven-day forecast, there is another chance for rain after the monday rainmaker. it gets here by friday of next week. so we'll have mere details on that towards the next week, but it is nice to see things will stay active. we get a little more rain monday, a little more snow monday, then a break for a few days and then more on friday and saturday. that is how you want things to go with breaks. that is a good way to spend winter. >> that two or three-daybreak allows crews to catch up with roads in those areas that got snow. >> no issues. a half foot on the pass. that's nothing like what happened with the last storm,

the weather cooperated for yesterday's 133rd annual rose parade in pasadena. despite covid cases, they turned out for color full floats and marching bands and this year's theme was dream, believe and achieve. >> we're getting our first look father first baby born in the bay area on new year's day and she had impeccable timing. she made her big debut in antioch after the stroke of midnight. we don't know her name yet but she has bragging rights over a baby boy born a half-hour later in s santa rosa. our congratulations go out to both fam
