with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with new urgency to protect young children in the fight against covid. more than 981,000 children caught the virus from january 6th to the 13th. that's triple the number of cases compared to two weeks prior. dr. anthony fauci said the fda could authorize pfizer's vaccine for kids under the age of 5 within the next month. he believes they'll need three doses to provide a strong immune response. some hospitals are getting much-needed relief. 25 members of the military arrived at a hospital in newark, new jersey, yesterday to help with staffing shortages. employees there are urging people to get vaccinated and wear masks which remains a heated issue. laura podesta is in new york with more. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. hospitals here in new york city, one in brooklyn and another in the bronx, are also getting military help soon. it's not a permanent solution. the service members will be working at the hospitals for about a month, but it is a

much-needed assist for the nurses and doctors we know have been overwhelmed by the omicron variant which is still so prevalent. and we're continuing to see pushback from many who don't want to get the vaccine or even wear masks. an american airlines flight from miami to london was forced to turn around wednesday after a passenger refused to wear a mask. >> we were about an hour and a half into it and had to come back. >> reporter: the woman in her 40s wouldn't comply with the federal mask mandate. she was not arrested but is on the airline's no-fly list. >> there was an extreme incident with a passenger, and they had to turn around. >> reporter: the faa says there have been 92 incidents of unruly passengers related to face masks this year. >> it's a costly decision on the airline's part to turn the plane around, and we'll see if that cost is actually put on the passenger. >> reporter: while masks help prevent the spread of covid-19,

the new data shows vaccinations are the best tool for preventing severe illness. according to the cdc, unvaccinated people 50 and older are at least 44 times more likely to end up in the hospital than those fully vaccinated and boosted. >> there is a war going on in our hospitals against this virus. >> reporter: becky hultberg is the president of the oregon association of hospitals. she says staffing shortages are among the problems facing hospitals nationwide. >> schools have gone remote. businesses have shut down. but that is not an option for a hospital. >> reporter: 8.8 million americans called out of work between december 29th and january 10th because they either had covid or were looking after someone infected. that's triple the amount from one month ago. and that n number, nearly nine million people who called out sick, was the highest number since the census bureau started taking the survey in april, 2020. the previous peak was 6.6 million in january, 2021. >> wow. laura podesta in new york. thank you very much.

"bat out of hell" is one of the top ten best selling of all time including "paradise by the dashboard light." his biggest hit was "i'd do anything for love, but i won't do that," which earned him a grammy. he also appeared in the movie "the rocky horror picture show." he was 74 years old. diplomatic efforts to ease tensions with russia over a possible military invasion of ukraine continue today in geneva. that's where secretary of state antony blinken is meeting with russia's foreign minister. yesterday president biden tried to clarify remarks about a possible russia invasion. he said that any russian troop movements across ukraine's border could constitute an invasion. on wednesday, mr. biden said the

u.s. might be okay with a, quote, minor incursion by russia into ukrainian territory. the house committee investigating the january 6 capitol riot wants to speak to ivanka trump. she's one of the people who asked then-president trump to call off the rioters that day. scott macfarlane explains. >> reporter: one year to the day after donald trump departed the white house, his daughter ivanka has been asked to come back to washington. the january 6 committee wants to know exactly what ivanka trump heard in the oval office when her father spoke with mike pence by phone that morning urging him to block certification of president biden's win and what she may have done to stop him. >> we have testimony from other witnesses that ms. trump was sent in to persuade her father to issue a statement, to try and call off the riot. we'd like to know more about that. >> reporter: the committee has information the former president recorded outtakes of his january 6 video message to rioters in which he did not ask them to leave.

school reopens after a deadly shooting rampage in november. a student at oxford high school is accused of killing four students and wounding several other people. during a virtual town hall earlier this month, school officials said that the changes could include ammunition-sniffing dogs and random security sweeps in parking lots and on school buses, and they said there's been extensive physical renovations at the school since the shooting. there's new research on how covid can decrease male fertility, and california is getting help for wildfires. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports vice president harris will be in california today to announce the federal government is giving the state $600 million in disaster funds to help recover from devastating wildfires. the administration says the vice president will also highlight plans to spend an additional $5 billion to combat, prevent, and prepare for wildfires. last year's wildfire season was among the worst in the state's history. "usa today" says a study

shows covid vaccines do not affect a couple's chances of getting pregnant, but catching the virus might. researchers at boston university studied more than 2,000 couples, and they found no differences in their chances of conception if either partner was vaccinated compared to unvaccinated couples. but they found that men's fertility rates diminished up to 60 days after contracting covid. and "the new york times" says a sprawling coral reef resembling roses was discovered off the coast of tahiti. deep sea diving scientists said they found the almost two-mile-long reef hidden between 100 and 300 feet below the surface. they describe it as a remarkably well-preserved reef, and it appeared to be largely unscathed by climate change. >> it's impressive to find such system in a very good state of health at that sort of depth. >> climate change poses a significant threat to coral reefs. scientists want to learn why

shares of netflix sank in late trading after the company fell short of expectations for new subscribers in the fourth quarter. taking a look at the broader market, the dow dropped 313 points. the nasdaq tumbled 186, and the s&p 500 fell 50. the government has issued a warning on certain infant loungers. the consumer product safety commission wants families to stop using some products by leachco. the agency says the podster, podster blush bummzie and playtime can lead to suffocation. the warning comes after the deaths of a 17 day-old-baby and 4-month-old. in a statement, leachco defended not recalling the item saying the products are safe for lounging, not for sleeping. peloton is trying to get back on track ahead of the a report said the fitness company was going to temporarily halt production because of lower demand. shares dropped nearly 24% on the day due to the news. but last night peloton's ceo john foley said the report was

opening statements are expected to begin monday in the federal trial of three former police officers in minnesota. they are facing charges in connection with the george floyd case. mola lenghi reports from st. paul. >> reporter: security teams patrolled the federal courthouse in st. paul where a jury has been selected in the trial of three former minneapolis police officers. thomas lane, j. alexander kueng, and tou thao are facing charges for their part in the deadly arrest of george floyd. the three men are accused of willfully depriving floyd of his civil rights while their colleague, derek chauvin, kneeled on his neck. >> find the defendant guilty -- >> reporter: courtroom cameras captured the moment chauvin was convicted of murder last year. this trial will not be broadcast. attorney and legal analyst joe tamburino -- what is the defense's argument? >> it's twofold. one, they did not willfully try to violate the rights of mr. floyd. and secondly, that they had no
