millions of americans in the east face an icy commute to work this morning after a powerful winter storm hit the region. people in long island, new york, one of the hardest hit areas were digging out this weekend. sadly, at least three people died there while shoveling snow. and snow wasn't the only problem in plymouth, massachusetts. powerful winds sent waves crashing against this hotel. some areas in plymouth county received more than two feet of snow. wendy gillette is in long island, new york, with more on this. wendy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this is some of the snow that's piled up here after people cleared the sidewalks in riverhead. a total of 15 inches of snow fell here. the snow has stopped in the northeast, but the dangerous winter weather has not ended. >> as long as we can take our cars out we're good. >> reporter: at least 12 inches of snow fell in nine states this past weekend. parts of massachusetts, rhode island, and new york got more

than two feet. >> first i thought it was ridiculous when they were saying we had 20 inches of snow. after seeing this driveway, it's obviously i was wrong. >> reporter: the worst conditions were seen along the coast. at the height of the storm, nantucket streets were underwater. here on the east end of long island, new york, the primary concern isn't flooding, it's the bitter cold. >> the cleanup of the storm will not be easy because of the temperatures that we have now. the goal is to have things ready for the morning commute. >> reporter: dangerously cold air moved in as the region dug itself out on sunday. >> hopefully the car starts so i can back it out of the driveway. i need to get it out so i can be at work tomorrow. >> reporter: the national weather service says the highest snow accumulation was recorded in stoughton, massachusetts. the town officially received 30.9 inches. right now in riverhead, it is 12 degrees, but with the windchill it feels like 7.

so just a little bit chilly, anne-marie. >> just a little bit. i like how you're trying to be positive. just a little bit. >> reporter: i am. >> wendy gillette in long island. thank you so much. so a u.s. citizen who once lived in kansas is under arrest for allegedly joining isis and leading an all-female battalion of militants in syria. 42-year-old allison fluke-ekren is scheduled to make her first court appearance today in a federal court in virginia. authorities say that she was apprehended in syria and brought back to the u.s. friday to face charges. prosecutors say she wanted to recruit operatives to attack a college campus in the u.s. and had discussed a terror attack on a shopping mall. the omicron wave may be tapering off in the u.s. the seven day average is over 543,000, the lowest since the beginning of the month. former fda commission scott gottlieb appeared on "face the nation" saying the current vaccines appeared to fight off

the omicron subvariant known as b.a.2. >> there's data out of the uk that suggests a fully boosted person may be more protected against this new v variant than they were against the original strain of omicron. >> gottlieb also said a vaccine could be approved by march for children ages 4 and younger. and north korea confirms that it test launched a ballistic missile capable of reaching the u.s. territory of guam. south korea and japan say the missile flew almost 500 miles yesterday before landing in the water between the korean peninsula and japan. it's the most powerful missile north korea has tested since 2017. a senior biden administration official told reporters the u.s. plans to respond to the latest missile tests in the coming days. and the u.n. security council may meet today for the first time since russia's troop build-up near ukraine. russia says that there are no plans to invade, but the standoff remains tense with no signs of deescalation. christina ruffini reports from the white house.

meanwhile, after eight years of war with russia, soldiers are ukraine's eastern front wait to see what will happen, and civilians have a already seen t much. >> translator: make peace. reach an agreement. you're all adults. >> reporter: russia for its part still insists it has no plans to invade ukraine. senators will have a classified briefing on ukraine later this week. christina ruffini, cbs news, the white house. and then there were two. it will be the los angeles rams and the cincinnati bengals in super bowl lvi. rams kicker matt gay made a 30-yard field goal with less than two minutes to play in yesterday's nfc championship game. the rams defeated the san francisco 49ers 20-17. the rams rallied from a ten-point fourth-quarter deficit. appeared on the show "head of the class" and "one day at a time" as well as hosted "saturday night live" three times. howard hesseman was 81 years old. a cold snap in florida is causing iguanas to stop in their tracks, and there are new details about a deadly las vegas crash. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the las vegas review journal" reports the driver in a crash that killed nine people was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour. that's according to police. investigators say that a car sped throu las vegas intersection saturday and hit five other vehicles. one of them, a minivan, was carrying ape seven people from the same family. they all died. the driver of the speeding car and his passenger were also killed. >> it was a tragedy. it was beyond sad. each of those people was a relative, a husband, a wife, a child, a neighbor, a member of our community, a very valuable member of our community.

>> one person is in critical condition. a total of 15 people were involved in the crash. "the pittsburgh post-gazette" says camera footage will be extracted from a bus involved in crash before it plunged into a ravine. the fern hollow bridge collapsed friday injuring ten people, none seriously. the ntsb is trying to get video from the bus' nine cameras before it's removed by a crane. investigators want to see if the cameras have video of what happened. and the "associated press" says that it got so cold in florida iguanas fell from trees. temperatures dropped to the 20s and 30s in some parts of florida over the weekend. anything near freezing is rare in that state. when it gets below 40, iguanas go into a sort of suspended animation, and they fall to the ground. they usually wake up, though, when it warms up. just ahead, it is one of the ggght will buccaneers quarterback tom brady retire?

spider-man keeps climbing box office records. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. a busy week in earnings season kicks off today. more than 100 companies in the s&p 500 will report fourth-quarter results through friday including amazon, facebook parent meta, and google's parent company, alphabet. now wall street saw its biggest gains of the year, rather on, friday. the dow rallied some 564 points. the nasdaq soared 417, and the s&p 500 gained 105. spotify will add content advisories to podcasts discussing covid-19. the music streaming service will direct listeners to a covid-19 hub for information about the virus. the move comes after artists including neil young, joni mitchell, and nils lofgren asked to be removed from spotify over its role in hosting content that spreads covid misinformation. young singled out joe rogan who

hosts "the joe rogan experience." last night on instagram, rogan said he wants to feature opinions from all sides and pledged to balance things out in the future. he said he wasn't mad at the singers for leaving spotify. kia is recalling more than 410,000 vehicles in the u.s. because the airbags may not work in a crash. the recall covers some forte vehicles from 2017 and 2018. sedona minivans and soul suvs from 2017 to 2019. kia says the air bag may not inflate because of a chip malfunction. affected drivers will be notified by mail starting march 21st. and "spider-man: no way home" has found its home atop the box office. the marvel film earned the number-one spot again breaking an $11 million record over a very quiet weekend. during the past seven weeks, it's brought in more than $735 million making it the fourth highest grossing movie of all time in the u.s.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ tributes are pouring in for former miss usa and "extra" correspondent cheslie kryst. new york city police say she jumped from an apartment building yesterday and was pronounced dead at the scene. the former division-one college athlete and north carolina attorney won the miss usa pageant in 2019 and competed in miss universe. she became a new york correspondent for "extra." cheslie kryst was 30 years old. there are indications that legendary nfl quarterback tom brady could soon announce his retirement. espn and the nfl network both reported over the weekend that the seven-time super bowl champion has decided to retire after 22 seasons.

the u.s. the american ambassador to the u.n. says russia's action poses a clear threat to international peace and security. a russian diplomat called the proposed meeting a p.r. stunt. and it's been more than a year since the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol hill. trials for some defendants are facing long delays. scott macfarlane explains why. >> reporter: it moved so quickly, january 6th, life is moving slower now. more than a year later, not one capitol riot defendant has gone to trial. only a handful are scheduled to do so before april. the courthouse in which the nearly 720 defendants are being prosecuted remains closed to jurors through at least february 7th due to covid. some defendants say their cases just seestalled. >> i'm sure they're frustrated. you know, the delay in the progress. >> yeah. it's just the end now, and it's looming out there. >> reporter: staci peterson and katie cusick's father and brother are charged and pleaded not guilty and are waiting.

>> he definitely thinks not this year unfortunately. >> reporter: not in 2022? >> right. >> reporter: he make peace with that yet? >> i would say yeah. to some degree. >> reporter: a review of court filings showed in some defendant have sought delays to avoid going to prison during the -- going to court during the pandemic. we found covid isn't the only complication. it's the evidence -- not a shortage, but a tidal wave of it. from a day in which accused rioters streamed and posted their every moves. there are 14,000 hours of capitol surveillance video and social media videos, hundreds of phones, and more than 200,000 tips from the public. prosecutors must also organize, then share the evidence with the court and the defendants. in a new court filing the feds acknowledged they're still working on it will take time. one defense lawyer expects some of the cases to last until the next counting of the electoral college -- january 6th, 2025.
