most urgent warnings yet in the standoff between russia and ukraine. they say a russian invasion could happen any day now.ops de in north carolina yesterday bound for eastern europe. president biden said that he won't send troops to ukraine, but the deployment show u.s. commitment to nato. today french president emmanuel macron hopes to use tension by meeting with russian president vladimir putin. he'll meet with ukraine's counterpart tomorrow. laura podesta is in new york following the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. at the same time france is trying to establish some diplomacy and deter war, the u.s. will be trying to ramp up support for an allied effort in the case violence does break out. biden is meeting with germany's leader today. members of the 82nd airborne landed in poland this weekend as the u.s. builds up forces in eastern europe. >> obviously during this period of uncertainty we know that we are stronger together.

>> reporter: u.s. officials are hoping to deter a russian invasion of ukraine. >> we're in the window where something could happen. >> reporter: more than 100,000 russian troops are along the ukrainian border. sources tell cbs news that's about 70% of what's needed to launch an offensive. >> this is the single-greatest threat europe has faced since the 1940s. >> if war breaks out, it will come at an enormous human cost to ukraine, but we believe that based on our preparations and our response it will come at a strategic cost to russia. >> reporter: estimates are that an invasn cause 100,000 civil casualties and five million refugees. russia's deputy ambassador to the united nations called that madness and scare mongering in a tweet and added, "what if we would say that u.s. could seize london in a week and cause 300,000 civilian deaths?" president biden was asked by reporters what russian president vladimir putin is looking to

accomplish. >> i think things he cannot get. >> reporter: mr. biden will meet with the new german chancellor, olaf scholtz, at the white house today. germany has been criticized for not doing more to support ukraine. germany has refused to send arms to ukraine. most recently, anne-marie, offering 5,000 helmets instead. >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. well, jury selection is set to begin today in the federal hate crimes trial of the three men convicted of murdering ahmaud arbery. travis mcmichael, his father greg, and william "roddie" bryan are accused of violating arbery's civil rights and targeting him because of his race. the mcmichaels withdrew their guilty plea after a judge rejected the terms. arbery was chased, shot, and killed while running in a georgia neighborhood almost two years ago. all three men were sentenced to life in prison. and the mayor of minneapolis issued a moratorium on no-knock warrants in the city after police shot and killed a man during a no-knock raid on his

apartment. 22-year-old amir locke was killed by a s.w.a.t. team trying to i a police body cam video shows him under a blanket on a couch holding a gun before an officer shot him. police say locke was not the subject of the warrant. hundreds of people marched t cobe me,could ts of anyone i care about. i could be walking home, i could be asleep, i could be at work, i could be anywhere. i would like to see the police officers held accountable first and foremost. >> locke was licensed to have the gun, and the shooting is under review. new cases of the coronavirus are falling in the u.s., but deaths are still on the rise. more than 902,000 americans have died from the virus since the pandemic started. on friday, the u.s. reported 371,000 infections. that's roughly one million fewer cases compared to omicron's peak

almost a month ago. former fda commissioner scott gottlieb believes that some states might start lifting mask mandates in schools. he cited connecticut, new jersey, and new york where cases are down, and vaccination rates are up. as a nation there's still a long way to go. here's lilia luciano. >> reporter: spread out by omicron, daily deaths have jumped nearly 30% in the last two weeks. most in states with low vaccination rates. more than 120,000 americans are hospitalized with covid, but admissions are slowing and new infections are plummeting nationwide. cases have dropped more than 70% in maryland and new york. >> we're a good part of the way through the omicron wave. we're not close to the end now depending on how you measure that. i think this is going to be a long struggle. >> reporter: health experts say the best defen booster shot, and masking, though just nine states still require masks indoors. and the anti-mandate battle is

[ horns ] ottawa's mayor declared a state of emergency because of those protests. here in the u.s., some of those remaining indoor mask mandates will soon be lifted, including here in california on february 15th. lilia luciano, cbs news, los angeles. a navy s.e.a.l. candidate who died hours after completing so-called hell week has been identified. the navy says 24-year-old kyle mullen died friday at a hospital in the san diego area. the sailor joined the military last year. his cause of death is unclear. he and another candidate reported experiencing symptoms of an unknown illness. the other sailor remains in a hospital in stable condition. and chinese tennis player

peng shuai is denying she ever accused anyone of sexual assault. she spoke with a french newspaper in beijing yesterday. in a social media post in november, she seemed to allege that a former chinese vice premier sexually assaulted her in the past. she briefly disappeared from public view after the post. she told the newspaper that it was an enormous misunderstanding and she had deleted the post. peng attended a chinese curling match this weekend at the winter olympics. well, coming up, football star arrested. a new orleans saints player is accused in a nightclub brawl. and a crosswalk hero. a police officer saves a student from an oncoming car. this is the "cbs morning news." playing in yesterday's pro bowl in las vegas. the incident took place the day before. he remained in jail last night and is due in court today. the saints and kamara's agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment. a crossing guard in maryland is being called a hero, and there was a mass rescue on ice. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports the coast guard rescued 18 people from an ice flow that broke away on lake erie. it separated when people were snowmobiling. a coast guard helicopter and an air boat and a good samaritan rescued those who were stranded. everyone was okay. authorities had earlier urged people to stay off the ice on lake erie because of the possibility the ice could drift away from shore. "the baltimore sun" says a maryland crossing guard is being credited with saving a middle school student from being hit by a car.

video shows northeast police corporate annette goodyear directing traffic at a crosswalk when the student entered the intersection. when it appeared the student was going to be hit by an approaching car, the officer pushed the student out of the way. goodyear was hit by the car instead and suffered minor injuries. the driver of the car was cited for several traffic violations. and "the new york times" says queen elizabeth marked the 70th anniversary of her ascension to the throne at her country estate in sandringham, england. the 95-year-old monarch was presented with a cake saturday during a reception. four days of festivities are planned in june to celebrate her platinum jubilee. elizabeth was 25 years old when she became queen after her father died on february 6th, 1952. >> why is this such a big deal? >> no british monarch has been on the throne that long. given her age and steadfastness, it's a moment for the nation to reflect on her service. >> over the weekend, the queen issued a message showing support for her daughter-in-law,

crack down on unruly passengers. the air carrier wants people put on a no-fly list if they're convicted of disrupting a flight while on board. executives recently sent a letter to the department of justice calling for zero tolerance of any behavior that affects flight safety. delta says incidents of unruly passengers have increased since 2019. the irs wants to help with your taxes even on saturdays. the agency will offer walk-in help at 35 tax assistance centers across the country. there are only four saturday avlable starting this saturday, february 12th. the agency said it's part of a larger effort to help taxpayers this filing season. it's already facing a huge backlog of unprocessed returns because of the pandemic. and here's one sweet list just in time for valentine's day. candystore.com broke down sales data to put together the most popular candy by state. heart-shaped boxes of chocolate was the first nationwide chosen by 16 states. it was followed by conversation hearts in a dozen states, and

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the first medal for team usa at the winter olympics in beijing goes to slopestyle snowboarder julia marino. the 24-year-old won a silver medal saturday. she finished second to a snowboarder from new zealand who won the first-ever winter olympics gold medal for her country. marino came in 11th at the olympics four years the miami dolphins have a new head coach. san francisco 49ers offensive coordinator mike mcdaniel is joining the team. he's the first minority candidate to be hired as a head coach so far this off season. mcdaniel replaces brian flores who was fired by the dolphins.

flores sued the nfl, the dolphins, and two other teams last week over alleged racist hiring practices. the nfl's version of the all-star game the pro bowl returned after being canceled last year due to the pandemic. the afc defeated the nfc 41-35 in las vegas. the los angeles chargers quarterback justin herbert threw two touchdown passes and was named the offensive mvp. las vegas raiders s' defensive end maxx crosby had two sacks and three passes to win the defensive mvp award. and you normally don't think of golf as a particularly dangerous sport, but golfer jordan spieth seemed to put his life on the line saturday with his second shot on the eighth hole. >> guys, this is a scary shot normally, but this is downright terrifying. >> i don't think i could do that. >> i went over and took a stance, and -- yeah, it's scary. >> yeah. >> spieth played his shot just inches from the edge of a cliff
