make it official today, letting people go maskless in indoor -- most indoor settings including grocery stores, shops, and offices as the number of infections drop in the state. some of the country's top health officials are against the move. laura podesta is here in new york with more on this. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you're right, the cdc is still standing by its recommendation to keep masks on all students from kindergarten through the 12th grade. health officials, they want to see vaccination rates improve before a return to normalcy. >> i don't think we're there right now. >> reporter: cdc director dr. rochelle walensky says it's too soon to end mask mandates. >> we still have hospitalization eporhiwave, and similarly for . stes annedma

17-year-olds fully vaccinated, walensky says that could leave children at risk.r are in schools, and that the masking has allowed them to be in school safely. that and getting our children vaccinated. >> reporter: new york may let its indoor mandate expire tomorrow but keep the school mandate until vaccination numbers improve. >> it makes great sense to wear a mask if you're around people that you don't know whether or not they're vaccinated. >> reporter: at the u.s./canada border, truckers protesting canada's vaccine restrictions continued for a 12th day. >> we're not asking you to stop what you're doing. just stop forcing it on us. >> reporter: yesterday they closed part of a bridge that acts as a key trade line for detroit's auto industry, sparking fears the slowdown could lead to temporary layoffs north of the border. >> if you're one of these protesters and you expect those hundreds or thousands of people who can't go to work that day to show up and support you, you're dreaming. >> reporter: about $300 million

of goods pass over the ambassador bridge everday. more than 80% of canadians 5 and older are fully vaccinated, and polls there show broad support for measures that slow the spread of the virus, but some local officials have now announced they will loosen restrictions in response to those protesters. anne-marie? >> thank you so much. russian national ilya lichtenstein and his wife heather morgan are accused of attempting to launder stolen bitcoin. the cryptocurrency was stolen in 2016 when the virtual currrrenc exchange was hacked. prosecutors say $4.5 billion worth of bitcoin was stolen. the couple is not charged with carrying out the hack. the justice department says it has seized more than $3.5 billion in stolen cryptocurrency -- the largest financial seizure in the department's history. and there are mixed signals

this morning in the military standoff between russia and ukraine. french president emmanuel macron met with his russian counterpart vladimir putin this week. he said putin agreed not to further escalate the crisis in ukraine, but the kremlin denies any deal was made. charlie d'agata reports on the ramping up of military drills. >> reporter: combat-ready british tanks on the war path testing nato ground troops in estonia in a simulated battle against an imaginary enemy. but in a country that borders russia and was once a former verywith tsions mountingmy is in ukraineishreawinter eises le -fiedvantage, waging war against an enemy that specializes in fighting in arctic conditions. at the same time, russia has stepped up its own maneuvers

sending warships to the black sea. in addition to joint exercises for ground troops in belarus. with russia now amassing as many as 130,000 troops near ukraine, nato is beefing up its forces on russian and belarussian borders in response. battle groups led by the u.s. and poland, german forces in lithuania, caniaadtrpsoon i latvia and the british in estonia. diplomatic efforts to find a solution stalled after the kremlin dismissed claims from french president emmanuel macron that he saw a path forward following talks with russian president vladimir putin. with hopes of a peaceful solution decreasing by the day, nato officials here say they're worried these war games may soon be the real deal. charlie d'agata, cbs news. authorities have arrested the teenaged cousin of amir locke, the man who was shot and

killed by a s.w.a.t. team in minneapolis during a no-knock raid. 17-year-old mekhi camden speed was taken into custody and is charged with murder related to a shooting last month in st. paul. locke's death has sparked protesters including one last night in minneapolis. >> what do we want want? >> justice! >> when do we want it? >> now! >> police say they were looking for speed when they entered the apartment with a search warrant last week. he was not there, but police say locke was under a blanket, on a couch holding a gun before an officer shot him. locke is not believed to be connected to the murder in st. paul. last week the mayor of minneapolis issued an immediate moratorium on no-knock warrants. there was a frightening incident involving vice president harris' husband, doug emhoff. the secret service rushed the second gentleman out of a black history month event yesterday at a washington, d.c., high school after a bomb threat.

shortly after emhoff arrived at the school, a member of his security detail said "we have to go." >> the information, the bomb threat was immediately passed on to his detail, the secret service. at 2:18, he was immediately taken out of this location and left the area. >> reporter: emhoff was hustled out to his waiting motorcade and whisked away. students and staff were evacuated. police searched the grounds but did not find any explosives. noord on what the atlad to. anteam usa claimed its first gold medal at the winter olympics in beijing. lindsey jacobellis who's competing in her fifth olympics came in first place for the women's snowboard cross ahead of france and canada. this is the second medal for the 36-year-old. she won silver back in 2006. and coming up, more from beijing. american mikaela shiffrin skids out of control again as she tried to defend her gold medal in the slalom. and later --

allegation. prosecutors say there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that bauer committed a crime. a san diego woman accused him of hitting and choking her on two occasions during sexual encounters. he denies abusing the woman. bauer was placed on paid leave last july and still faces possible suspension by major league baseball. the "associated press" says the peloton co-founder is withitompanyn after a rough ride he's giving up his position as ceo to become executive chair of peloton interactive. the company also announced that it is cutting almost 3,000 jobs. peloton's stock price surged more than 400% in 2020 when people were forced to exercise at home amid the covid lockdown. but nearly all of the gains were wiped out last year when they returned to the gym. >> they got to expand their subscriber base. that's been a challenge especially as work from home sees more people go to the gym. that's why you need a larger

on the cbs "money watch," the latest efforts to keep the government running, and there's a new job opening for pizza lovers. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. stock futures are pointing to a higher open this morning after a rally on wall street yesterday. apple, amazon, microsoft, and banking stocks helped boost the market. among the companies reporting fourth-quarter reports today are cvs, disney, and uber. yesterday the dow rallied 371 points. the nasdaq gained 178, and the s&p 500 was up 37. lawmakers are trying to avoid a government shutdown this month. the house passed a bill last night to extend funding through march 18th. it's set to expire in nine days, but congress is out of session next week, so the senate is expected to vote on the measure soon. lawmakers say they're working on a larger bill to address spending through september, the end of the fiscal year. johnson & johnson has temporarily stopped production

on its covid-19 vaccine. "the new york times" reports the drugmaker quietly shut down operations last year at a plant in the netherlands where the doses were manufactured. instead, johnson & johnson is working on an experimental drug not related to the coronavirus. a spokesperson said the company has millions of vaccine doses in inventory and will continue to serve developing nations. and there's a good reason to throw a pizza party because today marks national pizza day. to celebrate, yelp is looking for its first-ever chief pizza officer. the role is for six months. the pay is $25,000. job duties include trying out different pizza spots every month and sharing each experience with the yelp community. video applications are being accepted starting today through february 28th. a winner will be chosen next months. anne-marie? >> i wonder if there's an age limit. because this is a perfect job for my daughter. if you are what you eat, she is like 95% pizza.

our top stories this morning -- new york governor kathy hochul is expected to announce today that the state once the epicenter of the pandemic is lifting its mask mandate. several other states have announced they'll ease mask requirements. the cdc director says it's too soon to end the mandates because of high hospitalization and death rates. and french president emmanuel macron says russian president vladimir putin told him that moscow would not increase tensions with ukraine. russia denies making any deal on deescalating the crisis. macron met with ukraine's president yesterday amid growing fears that russia could invade. and back home tax season is

well under way, and the white house is urging eligible parents to file in order to receive the full child tax credit. the monthly benefit expired in december, but some lawmakers and advocates are fighting to get it renewed. skyler henry reports from capitol hill. we are on a path to cut child poverty in america by 40%. >> reporter: vice president kamala harris touted the success of the child tax credit and urged eligible americans to file their income taxes to get the benefit's full amount. >> we want you to get those credits. working families deserve a break. >> reporter: the child tax credit was part of last year's american rescue plan pandemic relief law, and it included six months of payments per child for those under age 17. >> the monthly child tax credit checks have made an enormous positive difference in the lives of moms, children, and family across the country. >> reporter: kristin rowe-finkbeiner of the group moms rising says families who used the tax credit to help pay for things like food, rent, and childcare are now facing a crisis after it expired last month.

>> we absolutely need the child tax credit to continue so parents can go to work, so children can thrive, so people can earn living wages and move our country forward and also address the rising costs. >> reporter: a group of house and senate democrats said they wanted to pass an extension of the child tax credit with a simple majority using a process called reconciliation. but that would require the support of all 50 senate democrats, and west virginia's joe manchin has voiced opposition saying it should include a work requirement. >> my argument with senator manchin is give us a chance to let this work. let's see how it's worked over the next year. it's worked well over the last six months. >> reporter: the house passed an extension of the tax credit as pa other of the president's "build back better" act, but the bill stalled in the senate. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. the irs is telling all americans to file as soon as possible, preferably electronically so that tax refunds can be received in a timely fashion. coming up, new information on the case of vincent simmons,
