so-called freedom convoy protest that's blocking the flow of goods between the u.s. and canada. the biden administration is urging for the fourth day scores of truck drivers protested by the ambassador bridge which connects detroit and windsor, ontario. demonstrations have disrupted the flow of auto parts and other products between the two countries. protesters have also closed borders in two other states. laura podesta is in new york to explain. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. yes, near montana and north dakota. but eyes are also on california where a trucker convoy starting in l.a. on super bowl sunday could potentially cause problems. the city of windsor, ontario, is ina or reme >> they don't have the right to affect you or your family's ability to earn a living, and they've gone too far. >> reporter: now in its fifth day, the blockade is slowing down the auto industry in canada and the u.s. >> there are hard-working men

and women in an industry that's just getting back to full strength who are going to be out of a job at least temporarily. >> reporter: gm, ford, and toyota are among several companies that cut production at plants on both sides of the border due to a lack of parts. >> at the best case scenario we might be back in production early next week assuming the blockade gets cleared today or tomorrow. >> reporter: 25% of all trade between the two countries passes over the bridge. some of that has been redirected to nearby routes. protesters want an end to canada's covid restrictions. blockades have spread to two other crossings north of montana and north dakota. >> we have a right as americans and canadians to stand up for what we liev >> reporter: there are concerns a trucker convoy could start this weekend at the super bowl in los angeles. >> i think dhs is going to let things play out and be very alert for the possibility of violence.

>> reporter: cbs news has learned the department of homeland security is bringing in additional staff to its incident command post in l.a. law enforcement believe the convoy may travel from california to washington, d.c., arriving in time for president biden's state of the union on march 1s1st. and anne-marie, we are hearing from the american trucking association's president who issued a statement yesterday saying it, quote, strongly opposes any protest activities that disrupt public safety and compromise the economic and national security of the u.s. >> that's very interesting. laura podesta in new york, thanks a lot, laura. so across the country americans are seeing higher prices everywhere they go. i know you're feeling it from the gas stations to the grocery store. that's because inflation climbed to the highest level in your nancy cordes reports. inflation is up. it's up. >> reporter: president biden didn't sugarcoat it after consumer prices rose even faster

than predicted. the surge driven in part by a 40% hike year over year in gas prices. the national average for a gallon hit $3.47, a price not seen since 2014. >> used to be like $30 every time i filled up. now it's over $50. >> reporter: electricity is up nearly 11%. meat and eggs up 12%. used cars up 40%. at piece of cake movers in queens, new york, a used moving truck that used to cost them $25,000 is now $45,000. >> we have to keep looking at our expenses. we have to keep looking at our pricing models, and we have to keep making changes. >> reporter: moody's estimates that all those price hikes are costing the average american family an extra $276 a month. >> your purchasing power that you can spend in the economy is diminishing.

there's no getting around that. >> reporter: cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger notes that average wages also rose over the past year by nearly 6%. but they still didn't keep pace with inflation. >> that means a lot of americans are falling behind every single pay period. >> reporter: president biden says he's going to, quote, work like the devil to try to bring down gas prices, but there if theederal reserve tries to raise interest rates to slow slowhen'onatio some tough tradeoffs ahead. nancy cordes, cbs news, the white house. some unusual winter wildfires destroyed homes and forced the evacuation of several hundred people in southern california. a heat wave with temperatures in the upper 80s combined with a drought and strong winds fueled the fires in the los angeles area. about 200 firefighters battled the sycamore fire in the suburb of whittier after it erupted

yesterday afternoon. another fire broke out before dawn threatening homes in laguna beach. sleeping residents were awakened by warnings to evacuate. >> told my husband to get out of bed and lead's go. we walked to the little balcony off our house, and i looked up and all this area behind us was a huge bank of fire. it was terrifying. >> nearly 400 firefighters were able to slow the progress of the emerald fire and prevent it from reaching any homes. meantime, world leaders are voicing more concern about the rising tensioning between russia and ukraine. britain's prime minister said the crisis has grown into the most dangerous time in decades.h ukraine won't join nato. but ukraine's top security official told cbs news' imtiaz

"nobody can make a deal about us without us," he says. ukranian civilians are ready to die for our liberty. >> ukraine also started its own military exercises yesterday. and britain's prince charles has tested positive for covid for the second time. a message on his twitter page says the 73-year-old prince tested positive yesterday. he is self-isolating. charles previously contracted covid in march of 2020 in the early days of the pandemic. he recently met with his 95-year-old mother, queen elizabeth, raising concerns about her health. buckingham palace says that she is not displaying any symptoms. coming up, a tearful farewell. snowboarder shaun white takes his last competitive run at the olympics. we'll show you how he did.

democratic senators to discuss his upcoming selection of a supreme court nominee. mr. biden held a strategy session yesterday with members of the senate judiciary committee. he reportedly pledged to make his selection by the end of the month. he also indicated that he would begin interviewing candidates next week. the senators said they did not recommend anyone to replace retiring justice stephen breyer. "florida today" says space company astra conducted its first rocket launch from the state, but four mini satellites failed to reach orbit. the second stage malfunctioned just minutes after astra launched the 43-foot rocket from asd unsiaveral. prided rrc were on board.astrs a contract space agency. it completed its first successful launch last year from alaska. and the "chicago tribune" says the online game wordle help an illinois grandmother being held hostage.

police say a naked man covered in blood broke into 80-year-old denise holt's suburban chicago home on sunday. he held her captive for more than 20 hours. holt says that she feared for her life as the man threatened her with scissors and knives. >> i was trying to survive, that's all. he said, i won't harm you or molest you. i didn't send my older daughter a wordle in the morning, and that was disconcerting to her. >> holt's daughter in seattle knew something was wrong when she did not receive her mother's daily wordle results. police were called, and they had an hour's long standoff with the man before he was arrested. holt was not harmed. still to come, air tag update. how apple is making improvements to the tiny devices after complaints of stalking. new data showed inflation hit 7.5% in january on an annual basis. that's the highest in four decades. it stoked fears the fed will raise interest rates more aggressively than expected. so the dow ultimately tumbled 526 points. its worst daily performance since january 18th. the nasdaq dropped 304, and the s&p 500 was down 83. apple plans to improve the saefrt safety of its airtags after complaints about unwanted tracking and stalking. the company said the devices will undergo software updates this year to add more safeguards for users some improvements are expected to include privacy warnings during airtag setup and alerting people sooner in an unknown airtag is traveling with them. the button-like gadgets were designed to help people find misplaced personal belongings. movie pass is attempting a comeback. the founding ceo wants to relaunch the movie ticket subscription service this summer. there's though word on pricing or if any theater chains have partnered with the company.

[ applause ] >> for the fourth time in his career, green bay packers quarterback aaron rodgers is the nfl mvp. he is the second player in league history to be named most valuable player at least four times. the man who presented him with the award last night, peyton manning, won it five times. the air force is getting ready for its traditional super bowl flyover during the national anthem on sunday. the service's heritage team conducted a rehearsal wednesday. five aircraft from around the country representing the air force's 75 years will conduct a first of its kind flyover above sofi stadium in los angeles. it will be a star-studded halftime show at the super bowl featuring several hip-hop legends. snoop dogg, mary j. blige, dr. dre, eminem, and kendrick lamar will perform. some of the artists met with the media yesterday and said the nfl was late embracing hip-hop and vowed the show will create more opportunities for the genre. >> we're going to go on and do a
