today president biden will host a call with nato allies in hopes of defusing a fragile situation. secretary of state antony blinken will meet with russia's foreign minister next week. the sit-down comes as the biden administration issues its most detailed warning yet about russia's possible strategy to attack ukraine. laura podesta is in new york with the latest on this. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. of course that sit-down between the russian foreign minister and blinken will be offer the table if russia invades ukraine in the time between now and next week. a spokesperson for secretary blinken said if that attack happens, it will make clear russia was never serious about diplomacy. vice president kamala harris is in germany to meet with nato leaders about the russian threat to ukraine. >> they have not moved any of -- they've moved more troops in. >> reporter: on thursday the u.s. and allies dismissed moscow's claim that it was pulling its military back from the ukrainian border. president biden said an invasion

appears imminent. >> every indication we have is they're prepared to go into ukraine, attack ukraine. >> reporter: secretary of state antony blinken pleaded for peace before the u.n. security council. >> i am here today not to start a war but to prevent one. >> reporter: blinken said russia may use a so-called false flag operation as a pretext for an invasion. >> this could be a violent event that russia will bring on ukraine or an outrageous accusation that russia will level against the ukrainian government. >> reporter: the kremlin denied plans to attack ukraine. last night russian foreign minister sergey lavrov accepted secretary blinken's offer to meet for talks next week. the date and location of that meeting has not yet been announced. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, lauer. former minnesota police officer kim potter will be sentenced today for manslaughter. potter said that she confused her handgun for a taser when she

shot and killed daunte wright during a traffic stop outside minneapolis last april. she was convicted in december. prosecutors are asking for a seven-year sentence. the presumed penalty under state guidelines. potter's attorneys are seeking less including a sentence of only probation. and a massive winter storm continues to sweep across the country from texas to maine with heavy wind, flooding, and snow. one kansas city suburb was hit with ten inches of snow yesterday. strong winds made it tough for crews to clear the roads. missouri highway patrol reported dozens of crashes and hundreds of stranded drivers. seven inches of snow at the kansas city airport broke a record for the day. heavy downpours flooded streets in the st. louis area leaving some drivers stranded. >> i had to sit on the -- the middle console and put my feet on the seat because my car is totally flooded. >> the system could bring severe storms to parts of the south today.

tornadoes are possible. it's expected to move off the east coast later on today. lawyers for former president trump are expected to fight a judge's ruling ordering him and his two oldest children to testify in a civil investigation. at issue -- whether the trump organization took part in fraudulent practices. here's catherine herridge. >> reporter: the eight-page ruling from the new york judge means state attorney general letitia james can question former president trump, don jr., and ivanka about their business practices as part of a civil inquiry, and the court order sets a short timeline ruling the trumps must comply in full with existing subpoenas to provide records and sit for depositions within 21 days. >> i love loans. i love other people's money. >> reporter: last month, james alleged the trump organization repeatedly engaged in fraudulent and misleading practices to secure loans, tax benefits, and insurance coverage. the trump organization is accused of inflating prices

including tripling the actual size of mr. trump's penthouse which added about $200 million to the valuation. james also alleged the valuations of trump golf courses in new york and scotland were exaggerated. the trump lawyers attacked james and her probe as tainted by political bias and an effort to pave the way for criminal charges in a separate case. the judge said their arguments missed the mark, even if james dislikes mr. trump it does not cross the line to unlawful discrimination. and mr. trump has the right to plead the fifth. even before the ruling, one of mr. trump's attorneys indicated that they would appeal, and that could delay the deposition. in a statement, new york's attorney general said "today justice prevailed." catherine herridge, cbs news, washington. a federal government shutdown this weekend has been averted. a bipartisan vote took place. the senate passed a short-term funding bill to pay for the government through march 11th. now the house approved it last

week. leaders hope it will give negotiators enough time to reach a deal financing federal agencies until the fall. the bill now goes to president biden's desk for signature. and there are more encouraging signs that the u.s. is moving past the omicron surge. the nation is now averaging 121,000 covid cases per day. that is the lowest since mid-december. now researchers at the university of washington believe 73% of americans are immune to the omicron variant, at least for now. they say that number could rise to 80% in a month. in california, governor gavin newsom yesterday announced his state is the first to move from a pandemic to an endemic approach. he introduced the smarter plan which calls for keeping schools open, stockpiling masks, and expanding testing to look for new variants. >> we're taking, we are taking a more sensible, and i would argue sustainable, health care approach based on the lessons

video to remind drivers to move over at least one lane if they approach a stationary emergency vehicle. geez. an investigation into whether teslas brake for no reason, and outrage over the way a russian figure skater was treated. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports the president of the international olympic committee was very disturbed by kamila valyieva's performance and entourage. thomas bach said that he felt very sad for the 15-year-old russian figure skater who fell several times during her free-skate performance yesterday. he also ripped members of her inner circle for not supporting her. valiyeva dropped from first place to fourth and did not medal in the event. she was allowed to compete despite testing positive for a banned heart drug in december. "the minneapolis star tribune" says mourners heard words of reassurance and fury during a funeral of amir locke. the 22-year-old was laid to rest yesterday. his white casket was draped with red roses.

he was shot and killed two weeks ago as a s.w.a.t. team carried out a no-knock search warrant. his family and supporters want the officers held accountable. >> when you go to bed at night, i want you to see his face. when you wake up in the morning, i want you to see his face. >> amir was not guilty of anything but being young and black in america. >> locke was not the person named in the warrant. the officer who shot locke is administrative leave. and the "associated press" says tesla is facing another u.s. safety investigation. this time over unexpected braking. the government says it's received more than 300 complaints over the past nine months about phantom braking in model 3 and ys. the investigation covers roughly 416,000 vehicles from the 2021 to 2022 model years. safety regulators say the vehicles can unexpectedly brake at highway speeds.

since november as investors remain on edge about a possible russian invasion of ukraine. the dow ultimately tumbled some 622 points. the nasdaq dropped 407, and the s&p 500 fell 94. the fda is warning parents not to use three popular infant formulas linked to bacterial infections. the warning covers certain batches of similac, alamenton and elecare. they have expiration dates of april 1st or later. there are complaints of at least four illnesses including one possible death linked to formula made by abbott in michigan. the company is recalling the products. peloton is rolling out a new video game-style workout that is a first of its kind for the company. lane break mode turns workouts into a musical fitness game. users power a wheel as it rolls down a track and are rewarded with points by hitting targets.
