most of the school set to be closed are predominantly black and latino. some teachers are on their 18th day of a hunger strike. >> i knew i would probably die for this cause because of greed and in the name of saving money. >> reporter: he shamed the board for the decision. >> you have the nerve to go see those crying babies and moms who know what you are doing to them. i warned you, let's go. >> the district says the changes are necessary because of declining enrollment, because public schools are funded based on enrollment. the district is facing a deficit over the next two years. taking a live look from san francisco where the lunar new year parade takes off and just a few hours. the pandemic put it on hold, but now it is coming back and chinatown is buzzing over its return. kpix has what to expect as we celebrate the year of the

tiger. >> reporter: the streets may be quiet, but in a matter of hours they will be packed with people celebrating something big for the first time in a long time. at long last, excitement, energy, and a celebration just around the corner on the streets of san francisco's chinatown, one that many have hoped for more than ever before. >> the last two years in the pandemic we really suffered. >> reporter: he is the chairman of the chinatown merchants united association of san francisco. he says february 19 is a day a lot of people have been waiting for. >> it means a lot for us. >> reporter: it marks the return of the new year festival and parade, one he hopes will bring a much-needed boost to this part of the city. >> we are telling people we are open right now. >> reporter: and the finishing touches were in the works friday to prepare for saturday's parade. >> like the year of the tiger, this is a big celebration. >> reporter: he worked on the parade for more than two

welcome back. the time now is 6:14. happening today, events are scheduled around the bay area to mark the 80th anniversary of president roosevelt's executive order creating internment camps during world war ii. tens of thousands of japanese- americans and japanese citizens living in the last were held ona county hshines a spotlight on this dark chapter. some japanese americans were imprisoned at the old racetrack, where former horse stalls were converted in the holding cells for humans. >> this was a reflection of

decades of really severe anti- asian prejudice along the west coast. that is really what fed it. in many cases families lost property, lost personal property, your businesses would be disrupted, careers disrupted, childhood disrupted. >> this afternoon at 3:00 san jose will hold a virtual remembrance ceremony. an in-person ceremony will be held at the first congregational church of berkeley. with the omicron surge easing, the mayor's of san francisco and san jose are looking ahead. mayor london breed is saying she wants people back in those empty downtown buildings. she said she is setting her own return to work date in march. >> we are looking at a targeted date that will encourage and get businesses to buy in and to

return to work on those days. i think this will be instrumental in trying to get downtown going again. >> mayor breed says she knows the businesses will have hybrid work at home and in office models like the city itself. gas prices in california hit an all-time record. according to aaa, the statewide average is up seven cents from a month ago. san francisco has the highest price in the state at 4:88 per gallon. taking a live look right now, we are seeing a chilly start to the morning across the bay area. let's take a look at the forecast. >> it is a really pretty view to start the day, when we check out the scene from treasure island, looking back toward the city. with plenty of sunshine from that vantage point. i've also got that showing up for a couple of other views as well. that is the scene from the top

of the salesforce tower to the east. the sun came up before 7:00, right at about 6:57 this morning, in fact. so it is bright and cheery out there. it is cold and some of the inland valleys. we are still hanging on to some mid-30s in the north bay and upper 30s for the inland valleys. daytime highs climb into the 70s for the south bay. in the upper 60s along much of the peninsula. along 70 for much of the shoreline. inland valleys, in the lower 70s as well. we have not noticed any change from the past couple of days. when things change, early this week, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. not only is there a small chance of rain, but perhaps the bigger impact will be the noticeable drop in temperatures. if we use those numbers, san jose, taking a look at that on the forecast ties, we would be around the low 70s. look how the numbers drop off

toward the middle of this week. we will be back at the mid-50s by tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. that is from this system right here. watch the development off the coast. that rain does not quite hold together in time to get here. it falls apart, but we have the chance for at least 1/100 of an inch of rain. maybe a couple hundred seven inch of rain. that will fall tuesday. that takes us through tuesday evening to tuesday night, to pick up the timestamp there. but it is on the east side of the state were a mower noticeable system will be felt. half a foot of snow on donner pass. that is enough that it will have an impact on the drive. it does not do enough to make a major impact on improving the snowpack situation, but it is enough to contend with if you have to travel in the mountains. let's get in the seven day forecast and show you how that plays out. it really shows up monday, tuesday, and wednesday. we already start to feel the

cool air monday, but tuesday and wednesday we bottom out in the mid-50s. then if we look across our microclimates, inland valleys of the east bay and north bay valleys also go back down into the mid-50s. 56 for the daytime high for places like concord and livermore and 61 for our north bay valleys. so, there you have it. not a significant rainmaker, but noticeably cooler. >> we will take two drops of rain at this point, because it is more than we have had. >> it is all it will likely be, too. it is time for the cardinal women to celebrate as they clinched the conference championship

last night. the golden state rookie. the bay area was well represented. gary payton was his coach and to the game, first 250 gets the win. a nice little turnaround. it went down to the wire after a near steel. takes it strong to the rim and hits the game-winner. they go on to win the championship and beat isaiah thomas's squad to take home the rising stars crown. to the celebrity game, where bill walton served as one of the coaches. the play of the game combined some olympics with basketball. the high jump champion showing off his hops. climbs the ladder to slam it home and then at the end of the game, here is the cleveland browns pass rusher with an impressive dunk. it didn't matter, team walton goes on to win, 65-61. major league baseball players are not close to playing

anytime soon. the sides remain far apart on two issues, revenue-sharing and the luxury tax threshold. major league baseball announced they are delaying the start of spring training until at least march 5. games in arizona and florida, including the ones the a's and giants were going to play were scheduled to start next saturday. the league and players association will meet on monday and the players now have been locked out by the owners since december 2. looking to clinched the crown facing oregon state. third quarter, up by nine. misses, but put back in at the buzzer and then fourth quarter, the cardinals start pulling away. hall finishes with a game-high 21 points. stanford wins, 87-63, and the cardinal clinch the pac-12 conference championship for the regular season for the second year in a row. we stay in oregon.
