russian in-- the russian invasion of ukraine. president biden has agreed in principle to meet with russian president vladimir putin. top u.s. officials believe putin is moving forward with plans to invade. joint russian military exercises in belarus have also been extended after they were supposed to end yesterday. the white house has warned moscow of severe economic sanctions if it carries out an attack. bradley blackburn is following the latest developments from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this possible meeting between president biden and president putin was brokered by the french. a last-ditch effort to avoid war. the white house says they are pursuing diplomacy right up until the moment russia invades. president biden and russian president vladimir putin have agreed in principle to a face-to-face meeting to discuss the standoff over ukraine. >> president biden has made very clear that he's prepared to meet president putin at any time, in any format, if that can help prevent a war.

>> reporter: the time to timing and location of a possible summit have yet to be determined. the details will be arranged during thursday's sit-down between secretary of state antony blinken and russian foreign minister sergey lavrov. the white house stressed that there will be no talks if russia attacks ukraine. at least 150,000 russian troops are now in position along that nation's border. sources tell cbs news those soldiers have already received orders to invade. >> i don't believe it's a bluff. i think it's -- i think he's assembled the kinds of things that you would need to conduct a successful invasion. >> reporter: president biden convened a meeting of the national security council on sunday. the administration says russia faces severe economic sanctions if it moves against ukraine. >> listen, guys, we're talking about the potential for war in europe. >> reporter: this weekend, president putin oversaw military drills that included nuclear-capability missiles. the russian leader has demanded

an end to nato's expansion into eastern europe but says russia has no plans to invade ukraine. and those thousands of russian troops in belarus were supposed to leave that country after wrapping up ten days of joint military exercises, but russia says that deployment has now been extended indefinitely. >> very concerning. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you so much. closing arguments get under way today in the federal hate crimes trial of the men convicted of killing ahmaud arbery. tr they've pleaded not guilty to violating arbery's civil rights. they were already convicted of his murder last year in georgia in a state trial and sentenced to life if n prison. arbery was chased and shot two years ago while jogging in a neighborhood. this morning, queen elizabeth is in isolation at windsor castle after testing positive for covid. the 95-year-old will remain, though, on light duties this

week. as ian lee reports, it has been a difficult time for the royal family. >> reporter: a statement from buckingham palace says the 95-year-old monarch is experiencing mild, cold-like symptoms, and is currently receiving medical attention. and in the spirit of her nation, she's carrying on with light duties. >> i'm here. >> reporter: last week, the queen met members of the military while keeping her walking stick close by. >> how are you? >> well, as you can see, i can't move. >> reporter: queen elizabeth's diagnosis comes just weeks after prince charles and his wife camilla both caught the virus. although it's uncertain how she contracted it, the queen is believed to be triple vaccinated. she's been a beacon of strength for the nation during the pandemic, rallying her people in its darkest days. >> we will meet again. >> reporter: now it's her turn to receive support. [ prime minister boris johnson wished the queen a rapid return to vibe rack good health.

queen elizabeth is currently celebrating her platinum jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne. it hasn't been all cake as her covid diagnosis caps off a stressful week for the royal family. prince andrew settled a sexual assault lawsuit with virginia guiffre for an undisclosed amount. now british police are investigating prince charles' charity for allegedly offering favors in exchange for donations. there has also been speculation about the queen's health. last october she spent a night at a hospital in london for an undisclosed condition. her doctors told her at the time to rest and slow down. ian lee, cbs news, windsor, england. >> reporter: french police have opened an investigation into the death of an associate of jeffrey epstein. former modeling agent jean-luc brunel was found dead saturday in his prison cell in paris. the 75-year-old was being held in connection to an investigation into a rape and sex trafficking of minors. while an official cause of death

has not been released, his lawyers suggested he killed himself. epstein died by suicide himself in his new york jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking. investigators are looking into a pair of helicopter crashes over the weekend. you can see on the left side of your screen, in this home surveillance video, a police chopper crashing into the water off newport beach. that's in california. two officers from nearby huntington beach were on board. one died, the other was injured. witnesses described the scene. >> chopper was coming straight down for our houses, and the pilot made a last-minute attempt to ditch it in the water and not hit the houses. >> the houses all shook. several on the street heard it, and everyone screamed "helicopter down," and we knew something was wrong. >> no word yet on what caused the chopper to go down. hours earlier, on the east coast, this terrifying scene played out on a busy florida beach. a chopper slammed into the water just feet from swimmers and sunbathers in miami beach.

two people on board the helicopter were hurt. everyone on the ground was okay, and there was no word on the cause of that crash either. and the 2022 winter olympics in beijing have officially come to an end. the closing ceremony was held yesterday at the birds nest stadium. american bobsledder elana meyers taylor was selected to be the u.s. flag bearer. team usa finished with 25 medals overall, fifth most behind norway, russia, germany, and canada. the 2026 winter olympics will be held in milan and cortina in italy. coming up, rodents wreak havoc. how an infestation at a family dollar warehouse forces the shopping chain to close hundreds of stores. and basket-brawl. what sparked a huge fight between two college rivals including some of their coache. this is the "cbs morning news." with dupixent, i can du more....beginners' yoga.

mastermind bernie madoff and her husband have been found dead in their florida home. the bodies of 87-year-old sondra weiner and her husband were discovered with gunshot wounds. investigators called it an apparent murder/suicide. madoff died in prison last year after being sentenced to 150 years for one of the largest ponzi schemes in history. after almost two years, australia allows tourists back into the country, and rodents are being blamed for the temporary closing of hundreds of family dollar stores. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports an infestation of rodents at a family dollar distribution .

more than 400 impacted stores have temperature raefrl closed. the "associated press" says australia is welcoming back tourist for the first time in almost two years after dropping many of its covidste fir plane morning local time from los angeles. people were greeted at sydney's airport by well wishers including someone dressed as a kangaroo. the vaccination status of all the travelers will be checked. for some it is the first time they have seen family in years. >> it's very emotional. i haven't seen my dad in four years. it was great to hug him. all the welcome presents make me feel at home. it's special. >> australian officials say it will take about two years for travel and tourism numbers to return to pre-pandemic levels. and "the pittsburgh post- post-gazette" reports the steelers hired brian flores as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach. flores was hired as head coach of the miami dolphins last month. he later filed a lawsuit against

projected $51 million. it stars tom holland and mark wahlberg who are searching for a fortune lost 500 years ago. the solid debut marked another win for holland with sony pictures following the success of "spider-man: no way home." renters are seeing higher prices with no end in sight. according to realtor.com, the average rent increased more than 19% from december, 2020, to december, 2021, in the 50 largest metro areas in the u.s. experts say many factors are responsible including a shortage of housing and extremely low rental vacation vacancies. they expect rates to continue to rise this year but at a slower pace. on the cbs "money watch," the housing market is heating up again, and some americans find themselves in a delicate financial situation. here's diane king hall. >> reporter: wall street is closed today in honor of presidents' day. in the week ahead, investors will continue to monitor the latest geopolitical developments, and on the

economic calendar it's all about the consumer with new data on consumer sentiment and spending due. demand for homes bounced back in january, according to the national association of realtors. existing home sales rose 6.7% last month. meanwhile, the amount of homes on the market fell pushing up prices. the median price of a previously owned home rose above $350,000. many americans are just one hospital visit or car problem away from onerous credit card debt. only 53% of adults have more money in an emergency savings account than on a credit card. what's more, 22% of u.s. households have more credit card debt than rainy day savings. on the bright side, the figures are an improvement over a year ago. and coca-cola is inviting people to drink the stars. the company unveiled a soda called starlight. that's an offshoot of the original coca cole arch the

>> steph curry was draining threes in last night's nba all-star game. he made a record 16 three-pointers and scored 50 points. he helped team lebron beat team durant 163-160. curry was also named mvp of the all-star game for the first time in his career. university of michigan basketball head coach juwan howard and others face possible disciplinary action after a skirmish broke out at the end of yesterday's game against wisconsin. as the teams were walking off the court following michigan's 77-63 loss, it appeared that howard took a swing at a wisconsin assistant coach. mayhem followed. howard later said he was upset that wisconsin called a late time-out with a big lead. he also said he took issue with someone touching him. tennis star novak djokovic returns to action today for the first time since being deported from australia. djokovic is in dubai to play a tournament there. he was not allowed to play in the australian open over his
