ukraine and he's ordering military officials to put russia's nuclear deterrence in a combat duty. president putin is saying what is aggressive states from leading nato powers. let's catch up on this morning today. we're looking at clear skies and warmer temperatures. we have a few spots in the mid- 30s right now. and that is a big improvement from majority, which is what it was yesterday. and we don't have anyone at freezing. it's 36 in santa rosa and livermore and 39, concord. you will notice it feels better. 48 in san francisco and oakland is at 46. and no major issues with fog. you can see for 10 miles down the road and in terms of the forecast the rest of today, we're about five to six degrees warmer today than we were yesterday. and that means we'll be up to near 70. the inland parts of the bay, 67 long the shoreline and back to

you, devin. to our coverage much of ukraine now, the russian troops are continuing their march forces rainian air catal ofkyi and fowl facilities overnight as the invasion enters day four: there are reports of street fighting in the second largest city, kharkiev. on saturday, a missile struck a high-rise apartment building in the capital city of kyiv. >> the russian troops continue to shill military and civilian structures. cyberattacks and government institutions continue. >> ukraine's president is vowing not to surrender. for ukrainian citizens, the situation is becoming

desperate. while people are hunkering down for safety in underground parking garages and subway stations, more than 150,000 others are rushing for the borders. the u.s. predicts as many as 5 million ukrainians could be forced to flee. >> we don't have any [ inaudible ] we must do something for survival. >> reporter: the u.s. pledged an additional $350 million in military aide. the u.s., uk and european union are blocking certain russian banks from the s.w.i.f.t. global financial messaging system. >> save ukraine! >> reporter: across the u.s., americans demonstrated their support at rallies saturday in los angeles and new york city. >> yeah, ukrainians living in new york we're desperate to ask to help ukrainians fight. >> reporter: they sang prayer for ukraine. they spelled the word kyiv,

ukraine's capital and sunflowers, ukraine's national flower. lease preston, cbs news, new york. and here in the bay area, kpix 5s da on lin spoke with ukrainian's whose relatives are heading to the front lines and russians who sent the war. >> they're justifying their support by calling the attack a peacekeeping mission. more on that in a little bit. for one ukraineion woman, originally from odesa, she's extremely worried about her relatives. >> it's terrible. my cousin just got pulled into the army and he's 60 years old. >> reporter: angela said her cousin should be preparing for retirement, not going to combat. she worries her 60-year-old relative won't survive. >> people are tieing for nothing. nothing. >> reporter: her cus up a family is sleeping in a basement because of the intense bombing near their he.

and she left odesa to come to the bay area when she was 16 years old. the war doesn't make sense. >> you're a neighboring country, and they're cousins. there is no point of that war. >> reporter: several people tell me the attack on ukraine is justified. one man was willing to go on camera. this monk who is with the russian orthodox church said he speaks for himself and not the church. >> no war is a good think this but it's a necessary thing, okay? it had to be but it's not a war but a peacemaking operation. they're not attacking cities or citizens but taking out military installing as and have been successful of that. >> there is footage of bombs dropped on civilians. >> those are by the banderrites. this is fake news, okay? this is fake lying news from the west. >> it's not fake news. they can go to instagram and follow people who actually live there. >> reporter: there are many

russians who are against the war. he left moscow more than three decades ago. >> invading is shocking. totally shocking. totally unexpected and i think it's thible. >> reporter: he and many others are pleading for peace. >> i am praying for a use, you know, and soon. >> reporter: in san francisco, i'm da lin, kpix 5. ripple effects from the war in eastern europe are hitting bay area gas price as we take a live look at the bridges. the prices continue to break records and economists said the problem may not ease up any time soon. many areas are seeing the highest prices on record. on saturday, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $4.95 in san francisco and santa rosa. it was $4.86 in oakland and san jose. and taking a live look at san francisco city hall. a rally is being planned today to, quote, save ukraine and stop war. it starts at 2:00 p.m. and organizers want a no-fly zone over ukraine and embargo

of russian and gas exports and more military help to the country. go to our website, www.kpix.com. in developing news, a suspect is in custody accused of shooting and killing a salinas police officer. the 30-year-old was shot whole making a traffic stop at griffen and east market streets around continue 45:00 friday night. one suspect was arrested. alvarado was a five-year veteran of the department, which had not seen an officer killed in the line of duty in decades. >> the death of the salinas police officer in the line of duty has not occurred in nearly 80 years. >> the officer stated in the fight all of the way to the end and he paid the price for it, giving his well of for it. thanks to his actions, we were able to apprehend the suspect. last night, the police department lost a son. the community lost a hero. >> reporter: the monterey

county district attorney's office is investigating. no word on the suspect's identity. >> two robbery and carjacking suspects were takenspo custody in oakland. they tried to avoid arrest by ramming the stolen car into police vehicles. the suspects are believed to be connected to a string of recent violent crimes in the area. >> and this video of an armed robbery in san francisco and this is one of several similar incidents in that area the past few weeks. kpix 5s reporter betty yu has more on the three suspects facing charges. >> reporter: surveillance video shows a commotion on 22nd street. someone yells i have a gun. give me your phone. two people chased the victim, surrounded and stole from him before running into a waiting suv. this is the third robbery committed by the same suspects

in less than an hour on wood, according to sfpd. >> scary and unusual and there have been incidents in the neighborhood in the past and a big uptick in property crimes. they have died down the last few months, but we had the police out for neighborhood meetings. >> reporter: you can hear presumably the victim say take everything in the audio captured from another camera on 2nd street near worth street. in the same hour, police ian 14- and 15-year-old and 20-year-old had already pulled off a robbery on vicksburg street. they rummaged through the victim's pockets. 30 minutes later, the same crew was at it again on church and 26th streets. and this type, two males punched the victim multiple times and stole the victim's property. >> we do see it occasionally around here. my car has been broken into twice and that is $500 there. the age of those guys is sad that they're so young.

will stay with my cousin or get a motel room somewhere. >> shouldn't be that big of a deal. hopefully, we can get it resolved tonight. i am sure there are a lot of people without my obligations. >> the red cross is working to help the people affected. three of the five firefighters were able to leave the hospital late last night. and also in oakland, crews managed to stop a fire from spreading inside of a commercial storage building. it started as an rv fire in san pablo avenue near 28th street around 6:30 last night. the flames jumped from the rv to a tree and to a fire escape on the side of the building. firefighters knocked the fire down before it could cause more damage and. several people are recovering in the hospital after an apartment fire in san francisco. the building went up on flames in the neighborhood yesterday afternoon and dark smoke poured out of the building's third and fourth floors. this is the fires aftermath. you can see the windows are charred and debris on the sidewalk. the crews rescued 15 people. nine were hurt and more than

half hospitalized. and they were able to rescue eight cats and dogs. authorities continue to investigate what sparked the fire in the first place. and happening today, oscar grant. already this weekend, dozens gather to honor and remember him. a b.a.r.t. police officer shot and killed the 22-year-old on new year's day in 2009. organizer held a community resource fare including performances by local artists. grant's mother spoke about the son and the impact his death had on the community. >> this is about uplifting the community and letting them know as long as we work together, we can strive to change the conditions of our city and community and our state as we work together in unity. >> and today would have been oscar's 35th birthday. >> still ahead on kpix 5 and streaming on cbs news bay area. what las vegas police are saying about a mass shooting

. welcome back. the time now is 649time. oakland is launching a new pilot program to crack down on illegal dumping. the city is setting up security cameras at hotspots. the city said that public works picked up over seven tons of trash from the streets last year and that is why they're turning on the new cameras. the city installed ten cameras in i legal dumping hotspots. public works has officers who investigate and fine people up to $1,000. a new poll suggests that confidence in california public schools has declined sharply the past decade. the pandemic might be a key factor in the survey by researchers at uc berkeley. >> how would i rate a, b, c, dm, the district i am working with, i would give them like a c minus or less. i am just being nice now. >> and like many parents and grandparents, crystal calhoun has been deeply dissatisfied with her grand children's school district in san jose.

sunrise is coming up at 6:43. so, we're just about 30 minutes newarkway from the official sunrise. it's warmer out there than it has been. a lot of mid-40s on the map. 46 right now in oakland. it's still in the 30s for the inland valleys. livermore, 36. concord, 39. it's 36 in petaluma and santa rosa and we still have cold temperatures. but we're not freezing like we have been for many of the last few mornings. and just to look at the comparison, how much warmer are we right now than yesterday at this time? i think napa has to stand out. it's 49 degrees warmer in napa than it was yesterday at this time. it's always seven degrees warmer in hayward than yesterday at this time and that is enough. you will feel the improvement. and it's warmer in concord by 2 degrees and not as hee the er t yesterday. by five to seven degrees. so, a nouns jump in the

temperatures for sunday. more blue skies for the most part and not all day. we'll watch how this plays out. if we put the future cast on, we're not see anything fog on here. those are high clouds to our north from that system which could have brought us rain. it's staying to far north to do that. as we watch the left of the day issue a few high clouds show up and gets us to around sunset, in fact and should make for a nice canvas of clouds to give us pretty colors in the sky. you will get more blue sky than anything else. we look at the pacific and we can so a series of storms out here. there is the next on one. and that is another atmospheric river there that takes all-at the pacific northwest. those systems are all staying too far north for us to get the benefit from them. you can see today, the rain, 1:30. showers north of fort bragg. moving into humboldt and it's kind of staying away from the bay area. that is how it goes the rest of today. the accumulated rainfall map doesn't have anything on it. the atmospheric rougher is at

lost a good sign. we're seeing the systems redevelop in the pack. the scenario is starting to redevelop where we're getting atmospheric rivers out of the subtropics and into the west cost. the problem, they're staying too far north and you see the pattern of accumulated rainfall the next few days and the lion share of the rain is going up into the pacific northeast. and we're not getting anything down here. there is the seven-day forecast. we do get a bit of a warm-up on monday and today. we're going into the mid-70s and bow wednesday and friday, increasing the clouds a bit. and still, an education n clouds and we'll cool back down. into the mid-on and upper 60s for day time highs into the middle and the late part week. yesterday was a great day.

. welcome back. it's 6:31. thank you so much for joining us. i'm devin fehely. let's start with a quick check of the weather with first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> we have a warm-up, five to seven degrees warmer. some places like 14 degrees warmer than we were yesterday. napa valley is one of those. here along the bay shoreline, we're four or five degrees warmer and that is the scene from the top of the sales force to the east. the sun is coming up at 6:43 and getting close to that. coloring the sky and looking pretty the next half hour. you want the jacket. livermore, 36 degrees. 36 in santa rosa and 39 in concord. those numbers, it's cold.

they're noticeably better than yesterday. nobody is freezing today. we had several spots yesterday that were. we take a look across the rest of the day. there is more blue sky than yesterday. more and a prettier day than yesterday. yesterday is cloudy. we go into the upper 60s as well. a 5 to 7 degrees warm-up where we were and having told you how nice this day is going to be, one item to keep in mind on that if you're going to be at the beaches. there is a beach hazard statement in place until 1:00 today. just make sure that you're staying aware if you're going to be near the water for sneaker waves. deafen, back over to you. and police in las vegas are involving a deadly shooting at a hookah lounge yesterday. the fight broke out between two people leading to an exchange of gunfire. one man was shot and killed, 13 people were hurt. two in critical . by the time police arrived, the suspects had fled. >> the suspects are currently outstanding. i can assure you, they will be

caught. our agency takes a lot of pride in the fact that our homicide section has the best solvability rate in the country. >> and so far, there is no arrests. police are investigating and looking at the evidence that was left in the scene to determine what cupids of guns were used and if there were more -- kinds of guns were used and if there were more than two shooters. as the search is on for the suspects in the attempted robbery in beverly hills, part of the attack was caught on cell phone video. a black ferrari was towed from the scene yesterday. two men punched and pistol whipped the driver as they tried to steal the swatch and failed after the victim fought back. one business owner said he saw what happened. >> as he went into the car from the park side, i think he was trying to grab something. the two guys attacked him. they started wrestling and fighting in the car. then they ended up coming out from the driver's side. >> witnesses said that one suspect ran away.

another jumped into a getaway car. police in southern california are looking for more than a million dollars worth of covid tests. that were stolen at the height of the omicron surge. santa ana police say it was an inside job and they're looking for the manager of the warehouse where the tests were being stored. the 33-year-old car litos peralta diverted the shipments to his home at the peak of the surge. he's disappeared and with him, $1.5 million worth of tests. >> beginning december 30th until february 7th, he was essentially going to some of the databases at work and routeing some of the covid tests to his home. if we, you know, backtrack to december 30th through february 7th, you know, that was kind of during the time when people were, you know, looking for tests, so it was, seemed hockey it was at he it was in high demand. absolutely. >> detectives say 100 separate shipments of covid tests

you see the bay bridge into the distance. back on treasure island. another beautiful view of the city and our last view gives us the scene from the stop the sa yestes rday. rc 7 der.grees warm or average. i will show you the difference in one second. napa is 14 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. everyone got a warm-up. and nobody is freezing. it's cold enough, you want the jacket. the mid-30s in the north bay valleys. 41, san jose and the mid-30s in the east bay valleys as well. it's 14 degrees warmer right now than yesterday at this time. in napa. we're seven degrees warmer in heyward. as much as 9 degrees warmer in petaluma, and we're 2 degrees warmer in concord. yes, it's an improvement. you still want the jacket. we're not looking at any fog. we have some high clouds to the north and that is where we have been seeing light rain across mendocino county. watch into the afternoon right there. a few high clouds will stream in across the city, the peninsula and the south bay. it will be more blue skies

today than anything else. the clouds will probably give you a pretty sunset. the day time highs climb into the upper 60s and it will be 70s today in san jose. 68 in santa rosa. 67 for oakland. 68 in heyward. 69 for livermore. the numbers are a good five to seven degrees warmer than yesterday. another reason why today is a nice day of ill have issues at the beach. we told you about the beach hazard statements. goes until 1:00 today. if you're going to be at the beaches, stay aware being vigilant for any smoky waves, staying off of the coastal jedis, those things. the pacific is still active. the systems are pulled into the mask northwest. we're going to talk about that in a second. the main thing that matters at this point is the conversation. the storms are all going too far north. we can play this for through today. you can see the showers moving through northernmost california and not able to get to the bay area. we have a sunny day in store. when we look at the a

accumulated rainfall map, there is nothing on it. and that is being driven in by an atmospheric river. it's nice to see they redeveloped into the pacific and that they're pointing at the west coast this is going up to the pacific northwest. we're missing out on that one. over the next few days, that just kind of weakens and drifts down our way. it doesn't really deliver anything in the way of rain here. by wednesday, it's pretty much fizzled out. watch the accumulated rainfall the next few days. very tell-tale sign here where the rain keeps going into the pacific northwest. when we look at the accumulated rainfall from now through march 9th, we don't see a lot here. if we come in and play that through for a closer look here at home, we'll let that go through thursday. this thursday. and there is a subtle uptick on here where we get 0.001 showing up. there is an increase in clouds on wednesday and thursday. i don't have rain in the forecast at this point.

doesn't look that likely. in the long-range forecast, the models are saying hey, there is a chance you might get 0.001 of an inch. whether we get that or not, it doesn't matter. as we play that forward, we go through march 9th. it tells the same story. we might get light rain after that and looking ahead into next week. none of the systems look significant enough for any meaningful rain. so, just an interesting takeaway on how and where the rain is falling, taking us past the first week of march. there is the next week. right in front of us. the day time highs will climb into the mid-70s for the santa clara valley. we'll go up to 74 in san jose. 73 on tuesday. then we'll start to cool things back down again. by the weekend. you can see the increase in clouds that comes with the small chance of rain on wednesday and thursday. not the most imprsive, but still worth pointing out. an increase in clouds and slightly cooler. all right, back to you. north of california, they actually get fairly significant

child. as the old of the sibling, was responsible to, you know, vise my siblings. >> reporter: day-to-day life was hard. when she was in eighth grade, she and her younger siblings would face another heartbreak. their mother was diagnosed with hiv. >> that was pretty much the calyst that got us involved in foster care. my sib lips have been in -- siblings were involved in foster care before, but it was my first time. from that point, we with want to stay with a relative, and we >> reporter: shanita excelled at oakland's castle mont high school as her mother's health slipped away. >> she was in the hospital my entirescol, i would go and visit with her. i got involved with students rising above. >> reporter: students rising above helped her get her own apartment near the hospital and saw her through high school and on to college at uc berkley.

when shanita took full custody of her siblings freshman year after the mother passed away, sra, church volunteers and other community members helped the family with campus housing, food assistance and homework. >> what draws me is the social investment. >> reporter: a job after college graduation took her to the east coast where social work inspired her to start yes, miss, in 2021. a nonprofit focused on the needs of underserved young women and girls. so far, her us plan includes future mentors, field trips, and career aspirations. >> i want them to be able to apply for any career, any scholarship and to look at that application and not feel intimidated. >> reporter: it's her own lived experience that will guide yes, miss, and the young women it's designed to serve. >> it's in the name. yes, miss. i want them to see themselves

the new mural is honoring san francisco's first black firefighter from 1955 to 1983. earl gage jr. was with the department, the only person of color within the san francisco fire department for more than 10 years. he died in 2017 at the age of 90. the mural is located in the fillmore district at rosa marks elementary school. black history month celebrations wrapped up this weekend. many families enjoyed a festival yesterday outside of san francisco's chase center. dance groups entertained the crowds and former stars from the golden state warriors were on hand to make sure everyone had a great time. >> we have so many amazing activities. a lot of focus around reading and engaging young people. really teaching them about the purpose of legacy and purpose

this morning and we have sunrise happening about 12 minutes ago or so. it's warmer out there and noticeably warmer than yesterd temperatures in the mid-40s for most locations. if you look at the differences here, we're 15 degrees warmer at types. napa, you're 9 degrees warmer and petaluma for this hour. the last hour, 50 degrees warmer than yesterday. and if you look at the daytime highs, back into the upper 60s today, we'll see temperatures climbing 5 to seven degrees above where we were yesterday. and the sufficient aft shows a subtle warming trend with daytime highways in san jose and into the mid-70s. we'll increase the clouds a bit by the middle of the week. the temperatures will come back down for the second half of the week and there is the microclimate showing us the warm-up as well. the low 70s for our inland valleys of the east bay and north bay. >> thank you. thank you for joining us. cbs sunday morning with jane pauly is next here on kpix 5. enjoy the rest of your sunday.
