good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin in ukraine where military forces still try to hold off russian troops after six days of rocket attacks. more than 70 were killed in the town of kyiv yesterday. russia appears to be getting closer to the capital of kyiv. new satellite images show a russian convoy that stretches about 40 miles approaching the city, but uk's intel says things have slowed because of logistical problems. the international criminal court will launch a possible investigation into crimes against humanity. it's forced hundreds of thousands to flee while the death toll keeps on climbing. natalie brand has the latest. >> reporter: sirens sounded in kyiv monday night as a massive russian mill torrey convoy moved within 17 miles.

a defense official said they could surround kyiv within days, but that's still behind schedule. >> the russians have not oechbl experienced a stiff and determined resistance by ukrainians, but logistics problems of their own. >> reporter: the attacks did not slow after five hours of talks between ukrainian and russian delegates. forces were on hial>>rotoric s regarding nuclear weapons is dangerous and adds to the risk of miscalculation. >> reporter: there are many who will be accused of espionage. they met in a special session, the first in 40 years. >> now we can save ukraine, save

the united nations, save the democracy. >> reporter: countries close off their airspace. standard and poor's cut russia's credit rating to junk status and the ruble fell 30%, less than a penny natalie brand, cbs news, capitol hill. thousands of ukrainians are desperately trying to leave their country. the u.s. warns more than half a million have fled. many have waited in freezing rain to reach border checkpoints and cross into poland. others are packing train stations trying to get out. not everyone can leave. men of fighting age must stay in case they're called to the front lines. >> if i must go, i will go. >> did you ever imagine you'd be faced with something like this? >> no, no.

it's like a nightmare. >> reporter: the european union says there could be eventually -- there could eventually be more than 7 million displaced people. president biden is expected to talk about the invasion of ukraine and the u.s. response to russia's aggression in his first state of the union address tonight. the speech comes at a critical moment as america and allies unite to take action against moscow. skyl skyler henry is on capitol hill. good morning. >> reporter: president biden will talk about the efforts he has taken to rally the world to stand up for democracy and against russian aggression as well as the steps taken to mitigate putin's invasion into ukraine and the impact on the global economy and for that matter the american people. also part of his address, a refocus, if you will, on the

domestic agenda, calling on congress to call for costs in several key areas. barricades and fence having gone up around capitol hill as a safety measure before president biden's state of the union address tonight. >> this address is as important as ever. >> reporter: authorities say there are no credible threats but want to avoid taking any chances following the january 6th insurrection and recent trucker protests. >> america is on the move again. >> reporter: last year at his joint address to congress, mr. biden detailed his plans for infrastructure in social programs. tonight he'll renew his plans to build back better ajen da as a way to fight inflation. >> lowering costs for child care, elder care, prescription drugs, those are not done yet. >> reporter: now with russia's invasion of ukraine, foreign policy is likely to take on a

at least nine people have died since the falling rain last week. mardi gras has returned to the french quarter and athletes are being blocked from competition. russia is facing a global sports crackdown after it invaded ukraine. the olympic international committee recommended banning russia and belarus from competing in all sports. fifa has announced it's suspended russia from its teams and all events. the nhl suspended its business dealings with russia. the "associated press" says that the house voted to award the congressional gold medal to the only all-female black unit to serve in europe during world war ii. the unanimous vote follows a long campaign to recognize the unit known as the six 888.

stock futures are pointing to a flat open after a turbulent day on wall street yesterday. markets were up and down with concerns how the global economy might end up because of the russia/ukrainian war. oil prices jumped after the u.s. and other nations issued additional sanctions against russia. the dow fell 166 points, the nasdaq gained 56 points, and the s&p 500 lost 10 points. airbnb is opening its doors to people who are fleeing ukraine. the housing rental company is offering free short-term housing for up to 100,000 people who have been displaced by the russian invasion. the ceo of airbnb has sent letters to leaders of poland, germany, romania, and hungary, offering to help those refugees. ey000 people have left ukraine since
