this is kpix5. how a windy day like yesterday can quickly turn to disaster . firefighters are ready for fire disasters even in the winter. sake separate cisco bartender is fighting for her life after a hit and run. shake a promise made by russia to ukraine broken. jake good morning, thank you so much for joining us. let's start with a quick check of our weather. >> good morning, devin. we are looking at the winds teaching from the augusta conditions with high wind event . they have definitely calm down . i want to show you the first alert doppler and a few showers out that this morning. even some snow over mount hamilton. here we go with a

live look. many clear skies this morning. temperatures on the chilly side in the 30s and 40s. i'd like to show you the current sustained winds . anywhere from 5 to 10 miles per hour. 12 miles per hour at sfo. walking you through the day and san francisco, partly sunny skies with temperatures in the mid-50s. for concord, looking at 58. san jose, 59. there is a slight chance to see a shower. powerful winds cause damage around the bay area . a set of power poles toppled upper and petaluma.

fortunately, crews were able to control those flames and avoid any particular problem. a large wildfire and shasta county that started as a controlled burn but got out of control because of the wind . >> reporter: this whole region deals with critically dry field levels. this fire and shasta county force evacuations and burned roughly 40 acres a day. >> if you like it gets earlier and earlier now. >> reporter: it is believed to be a controlled and that got out of control. those burns if done right are essential to fighting major fires pick >> the goal is to continue to lead activities like that occur. they are beneficial. we will look at prescribed fire here in santa rosa. >> reporter: to keep it to make sure that conditions are right.

california has acres and acres of vegetation ready to burn. it is at levels that should not be right now. fuels are drier than they should be for this time of year. fire season has not started yet and they are hoping more rain will come to push it back as much as possible. we could see the earliest start ever to fire season this year pick >> we continue to get those forecasts where they mentioned that the rain is looking pretty good. as it gets closer, we see those amounts of precipitation start to back off. sonoma fire investigators are trying to find out what caused the winery to go weapon flames. i helicopters spotted the fire at 9:00, say night. you can see how intense the flames got.

these photos show the aftermath and the charred remains of the tasting room and other parts of the winery. authorities are crediting a car seat with helping an infant survive a nasty crash involving a transit bus. the 18-month-old was in a car that rear-ended another vehicle near the martinelli winery. things got worse. the car with the infant month up in the opposite lane of traffic and was smashed by a transit book. that sent the bus careening off the road and down an embankment . the infant safety seat was a lifesaver. >> one of the bystanders were we came advised us as soon as he got to the vehicle he heard the child crying. the child was properly restrained in his seat in the rear facing manner. >> four people from three vehicles were taken to the hospital.

san francisco bartender is fighting for her life after she was struck by a hit and run driver. it happened right after she left work last month. we spoke with the victim's mother who was asking for the public's help. >> the bartender left work atwater bar on the embarcadero and set out for her 3.5 mile journey home on her bicycle. she never made it to her destination. >> reporter: alex was make a in a routine track calm to the bayview. she was struck by a driver on third street near fairfax avenue . she was left with traumatic brain injuries and the driver took off. >> what has been going on in your mind since this happened? >> shock. sadness. >> reporter: alex was in the icu and just this week came out of a medically induced coma.

>> she has tons of friends and she is very outgoing. she enjoys hiking and just recently learned how to scuba dive. she is teaching herself italian. butt her water bar family is devastated. alex has been a bartender here for three years. >> she shows up in a really good mood with a smile on her face and she has a really good energy. she lifts the spirits of everybody around her. >> the managing partner said he spoke with the witness it came to her aid pick >> this guy is a great human being because he heard the sound and ran to see what had happened. he got a description of the car but then when he saw alex he called 911 immediately and probably saved her life. if he wasn't there, who would have found her?

the driver is cooperating and there is no indication that drugs are alcohol played a role in that crash. starting on march 12, masks will be strongly recommended but not required which is in line with state guidelines. younger students will have to wait a bit longer. they will drop the mandate for all other grades. the district says it wants to give my time for families of younger students to get their kids vaccinated. still ahead, the word ukraine continues to rates this morning. we've got the latest on the broken promise by russia there cost people their lives. local ukrainians are desperate tech help those in their country. we will be right back.

next week the white house says the vice president is scheduled to travel to poland and romania. strict the bay area is seeing an outpouring of support for ukraine. everything from medical supplies to divers. ukrainian american say if they can fight in their homeland, they can take part here in the u.s.. >> i feel like short of being there i am not helping enough. >> after a few days of watching their homeland bombed and besieged and brutalized, she had enough and was going to find a way to join the fight however she could. >> this is the closest i've ever gotten toward, and it is terrifying. >> all of the supplies that you see here, diapers, baby food and medical supplies and everything in the warehouse behind it has been announced in

entire bay area. here is the report. >> reporter: back in late january, embers from a brush pile burning operation sparked the colorado fired near big sur. more than 700 acres for black and even after large storms dumped significant rain in october. january ignited a two- month stretch that picking the driest period ever recorded in northern california. right now our potential for wildfire is considered normal, but it is growing by the day. >> right now we are not in that more than normal potential. there is potential and the public can see that by the fact that we half a 700+ acre fire on the coast of monterey county last month. >> the latest maps just

released show a significant increase in the threat from wildfire in northern california in the bay area. by june, the potential jumps to a of normal. the big reason for that is the continuing track conditions and all back rest that is grown after the october and december rains is now becoming crackling fuel of future five years. >> if you look at the last few years, the potential is there that we could have a busier than normal fire season. the predictive services map shows that it is predicting the possibility of a busier than normal season. >> that was ellen martin reporting. because of the increased number and intensity of the fires, cal fire is prepared for an exhausting summer. homeownership repair there properties now and work on the defensible space around their

caltrans crews blew up a boulder that came down and a rockslide at echo summer and eastern el dorado county. here's more on the cleanup. >> reporter: quite the way to start the day with a bang. what followed, the sounds of drills, jackhammers and machinery. all part of the process to move pieces of rock off highway 50 at echo summit. the highway closed thursday night around six a clock when a boulder the size of the cabin slid into the road. overnight,

>> i was up there on thursday doing a little bit of snowboarding and trying to get a little bit better. >> how was that fresh powder? >> it was sexually before the storm. it will probably not be a super lung season. a black history month exhibit is so popular it has been extended to the end of march. we meet the woman the product to life two decades ago. she is this week's jefferson award winner. >> it is fascinating. i was eliminated from our history? >> reporter: she shares african and american history with hundreds of visitors every day who come to downtown redwood city. her grandson inspired the event as a kindergartner in 1997.

>> reporter: to carry family from highlands ranch was taking a trip to wisconsin and the three-year-old had to bring his new stuffed puppy along with him. somewhere along the way, the stuffed puppy got lost and today they were finally reunited. >> rg was all smiles when he got to the puppy again. he got the puppy before christmas and they became best friends. but the puppy got lost and so the milwaukee airport posted a photo on facebook. archie's dad recognized him right away. >> and he said, is this is? i look through my phone and they got stickers. >> reporter: they hurried home to play and make up for lost time.
