live from the cbs bay studios, this is kpix5 news. right now, have opened a day like yesterday can quickly turn into a disaster and how firefighters have to be ready for wildfires even in the winter. we are hearing from the family of a san francisco by tenter. a clue did get help find the driver responsible. a promise made by russia is broken. jake good morning, it is saturday, march 5. let's start with a quick check of our weather.

>> good morning. we are looking at the winds easing significantly compared to the conditions we had yesterday. a big difference this morning. is alive look with our rough camera looking at the bay bridge. we are looking at temperatures in the 30s and 40s this morning. 45, oakland. we are looking at mid-40s where you in san jose and we are checking sustained winds . along the peninsula and for the coast, 13 mile-per-hour winds at sfo. first alert weather and tracking a few showers out there this morning especially for the peninsula and the santa cruz mountains. a little bit of snow over mount hamilton. we're looking at mid-50s at the coast. mid-to upper 50s around the bay and low 60s inland. as i chance of a shower later

on today. we will talk about the rest of the weekend coming up. jake werfulnds friday cause damage around the bay area. gusty winds block traffic for a short time and one caught fire. fire crews were able to contain those flames and avoid a bigger problem like this. a large wildfire and shasta county that started as a controlled burn the got out of control because of the wind . we spoke with fire crews and sonoma county that are saying there being extra vigilant. butt while the wind was worse at the coast, this all region deals with critically dry fuel levels. this fire called the flanagan fire force evacuations and burned roughly 40 acres today. >> i feel like it's earlier and earlier now. >> reporter: it is believed to be controlled burn the got out of control.

those brands have done right are essential to fighting major fires. >> the goal is to continue to let activities like that occur. they are beneficial. we will be looking at prescribed fire in santa rosa. >> reporter: the key is to make sure the conditions are right, especially since california has acres and acres of vegetation ready to burn. >> the prussian the temperatures are at levels that they should not be. >> reporter: fire season hasn't officially started yet and firefighters are hoping more rain will come. there is a possibility we could see the earliest start ever to fire season this year. >> we continue to get those forecasts where they mentioned the rain when we look at the long-range forecast. and then we see the

precipitation amounts start to back off. sonoma fire investigators are trying to find out because the winery to go up in flames. a helicopter spotted the fire at 9:00 on wednesday night. you can see how intense the flames scott. these facebook photos show the aftermath of the charred remains of the tasting room. fortunately, no one was hurt. the chp is crediting a car seat for enabling a toddler to survive a crash. the 18-month-old was in a vehicle that crashed into another vehicle. things got worse. the car with the infant ended up on the opposite side of the road and was smash by a sonoma county transit bus. the bus careened down a 20 foot embankment. the bus ended up on its side at the infant safety seat was a

lifesaver. >> one of the bystanders advised us that as soon as we got to the vehicle and hurt the child crying, he found that the child was properly restrained with its rear facing child seat . >> four people from three vehicles were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. shake a san francisco bartender is in the hospital and fighting for her life. that happened right after she left work. we spoke with the victim's mother who was asking for the public's help. >> reporter: she left work here atwater bar on the embarcadero and set out for her 3.5 mile journey home on her bicycle. she never made it to her destination. >> reporter: alex was making the routine track home to the

bayview on the night of february 10 when she was struck by a driver on third street near fairfax avenue. she was left with traumatic brain injuries and the driver took off. >> reporter: what has been going through your mind senses happened? >> you know what? shock. sadness. >> reporter: alex was in the icu and just this week came out of the medically induced coma. she suffered a fractured skull, jaw, and ribs. >> she is super outgoing and enjoys hiking and just recently learned how to scuba dive. she's teaching herself italian. >> reporter: her water bar family is devastated. alex has been a bartender here for three years. >> she is a type of employee that shows up in a really good mood with a smile on her face and she has really good energy. she is somebody that lifts the spirits. >> the manager said he spoke

with a witness it came to her aid >> this guy is a great human being. he heard the sound and he ran to see what had happened. he got a description of the car, but when he saw alex he called 911 immediately, and probably saved her life. if he wasn't there, who would've found there? >> reporter: a black nissan altima sedan with a model gear between 2013 and 2016. the car sustained damage to the front bumper on the passenger side. >> if anybody has any information, please call the police and let them know. we are talking about a human life here. this is my daughter, and it could happen to anyone. >> reporter: water bar says they will be creating a drink

and honor of alex and the proceeds will go to the gofundme they created to cover her medical expenses. staff and students at the mission prep school or morning the tragic death of one of their teachers. abraham joshua was struck and killed the wednesday morning as he was riding his scooter. it happened on harrison and 22nd street. joshua was taken to the hospital where he later died. police say the driver is cooperating and there is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in neck crash. a new timeline for lifting the mask mandates and school. on march 12 they will be strongly recommended but not required at middle and high schools. younger students will have to wait a bit longer. the district will drop the mask mandate on april 12 for all of the grades. the district says i want to give time for families

sake live look a kyiv. a limited cease-fire is not holding and they say it is russia's fault. efforts to evacuate citizens are on hold amid renewed shelling russian forces. this comes hours after russia announced a deal on temporary evacuation routes. vladimir putin is warning against a no-fly zone over ukraine. if anyone makes that declaration we will view them as participants of the military conflict. nato has says there are no plans to do so. we have more on the continuing war. amid concerns fighting

could worsen during the coming days, thousands of people are crowding the train station desperate to escape russia's for ukraine before it's too late. it's estimated that more than 1 million refugees have gone to neighboring countries. >> we have seen the use of cluster bombs which will be in violation of national law. they see the biggest nuclear power plant after shelling set it on fire. ukraine's president called it terror on an unprecedented level. concerns of a potential radiation leak was after firefighters put out the blaze. no radiation was released. >> the intentional targeting of civilians or civilian objects would be considered a war crime. >> reporter: antony blinken to emergency meetings with allies in brussels. >>

andrew hall walked into the courtroom to learn his fate. he was convicted of assault with a firearm and a gun and enhancement. it happened in 28 teen. whole shot and killed a 33-year- old after he led police on a slow speed chase. >> it has been . >> this is a progression of justice, seeking justice that started many years ago. >> we have prayed and hoped for this day. we pray that he would get jail time and he did pick >> last year in march he shot and killed a 32-year-old man, and it happened when wilson pulled a knife. authorities are investigating that second shooting. >> and both cases i felt it was a green light for him to just kill when he thinks no one would care. we do care. that is why we are here today.

sea call is the first law enforcement officer to be convicted for an on duty killing . sector police union in san jose is trying to replace the county sheriff. it is the latest blow to lori smith trouble campaign to keep her job. >> another week and another series of high-profile endorsements against the santa clara county sheriff, lori smith. >> it was a very simple conversation. >> the one of the most influential voices. they represent 1100 san jose police officers who often work side-by-side with sarah deputies and they have chosen kevin jensen. >> we know based on our experience that this is the right person to lead the sheriff's department and reestablish that trust and

for that is a continuing drought conditions and all backcross that is grown after the october to december rains is drying out and becoming crackling fuel of future fires. the potential is there that we could have a busier than normal fire season. that predictive services map shows that because it is predicting the possibility of the busier than normal season. because of the increased number and intensity of fires, cal fire is prepared for a very active and exhausting summer. homeownership repair now and work on that 100 feet of defensible space around their homes. jake the brother of the missing san francisco college student is pleading for his safe return . no one has heard from his brother since monday.

downtown redwood city. her grandson inspired the event as a kindergartner in 1997. >> he came to me and said graham a, i am not doing another report on dr. king because i know everything there is to know about him. his big question to me was, there any other famous black people that did anything? >> they found that the black history museum and learning center. she has taken smaller versions of the exhibit all over the bay area since 2001 with the support of donations and sponsors. he brings his two children. it is not just for kids as this visitor can tell you. >> my head is spinning with joy . i feel like a kid in a candy store. >> things that my mom talked
