how the search for a vandalism suspect led to a bomb scare, putting an entire east side neighborhood on lockdown. run will soon be moving into the bay area. we are tracking the timing. this commercial building in the south bay still burning tonight nearly 12 hours after a massive fire broke out. the very latest from fire crews who are still on the scene. plus how a bay area veteran says he was tormented by his coworkers at tesla, and how he's now fighting back. and an update tonight on a couple whose wedding plans were put on hold because of the war in ukraine.

the new obstacle they are now facing. i say "good evening" to you. we start tonight with that bomb scare in the east bay. right now, the pleasant hill neighborhood near long brooke and morningside is getting back to normal after being forced to lock down for several hours. it all started around 3:00 this afternoon when police say they went to a vandalism suspect's home to serve a search warrant. there they found several explosive and other bomb-making materials. police quickly called in the bomb squad, a hazmat team, and the fbi. officers gave the all clear just after 8:00. a 27-year-old man was arrested. just minutes ago, police confirmed the suspect could be connected to incidents of vandalism in both pleasant hill and clayton. we'll bring you any updates as we get them. and let's take a live look outside for our other big story, rain. it will be moving through the bay area to start the weekend. so for more, let's get to chief meteorologist paul hagan. >> we're still in waiting mode

for that rain to arrive. the clouds have been building over the bay area for the past several hours. the first hints of moisture are just starting to get into radar range off the coast. we'll go through the next several hours without any rain falling in the bay area. let's switch over to futurecast and track when we will see the first few sprinkles. that will happen overnight, before the sun comes up on saturday morning. the first very light showers are going to be moving in. there will be more substantial rain to follow it up. this is the more substantial rain. beginning to move on shore as we get to sunrise, just afterward. some embedded heavy downpours of what will be light to moderate rain. it will not rain anywhere all the time. there will be more breaks, but more breaks of rain will move in. we head into midday and the afternoon. just a generally wet, cool day overall. we'll take a look at when the last rain will move out, when you can get outdoor stuff done over the weekend coming up in the full forecast. happening right now in the city of campbell, fire crews still on the scene of a massive building fire. broke out just after 10:00 this

morning inside a vacant building. chopper 5 flew over the massive smoke this afternoon. it could be seen through much of the south bay. a crew was training down the street when it broke out, and they say they were surprised how much of that building had gone up in flames by the time they got to the scene. >> it was a dark cloud of smog. look like gotham city. i was like, "what's up?" i talked to my neighbor, and he was like, "yeah, there's a fire." >> crews plan to stay on the scene to make sure it does not reignite. tonight tesla is facing new racial discrimination lawsuit. a former contractor who is black is suing the electric carmaker, claiming white coworkers tormented and harassed him. kpix 5's kit doe has the details. >> reporter: we have covered a fair number of these lawsuits against tesla. what makes this one stand out in particular is how they treated a black coworker who

was severely injured while working in afghanistan. before he was a quality control project manager at tesla, mark cage, who is african american, worked as a defense contractor in an active combat zone in afghanistan. two explosions in separate incidents left him severely injured. one day, a coworker's phone went off with a ring tone similar to an alarm, and it triggered cage's ptsd. >> he went to the employee discreetly and walmartly and politely asked that coworker if he could please change his ring tone, and explained why. instead of doing the civil and appropriate thing, that coworker not only increased the volume on his phone to make it more on noshes, but told other coworkers about it so they could change their ring tones

to to harass mr. cage. will can't do his job. >> reporter: about that job, in the lawsuit, he documented construction and code violations that were reported to managers, but later ignored. in particular, this e-mail talks about a welding repair of a high-pressure system that did not follow proper procedure. >> that can become a ticking timebomb. you can have this weld on a tank, and five years from now, you have a hundred workers around in a factory. that weld gives out, and a tank explodes, and you have massive injury and fatality, which is why what mr. cage was trying to

on the outskirts of the western city. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy says russian troops are blockading the largest cities to create a, quote, humanitarian catastrophe. vladimir putin vowed to press on with the bombard. despite sanctions and intense international pressure. meantime n a two-hour phone call, cbs has learned china has still not decided whether or not to help putin. meanwhile, communities all over the bay area have stepped up to help ukrainian residents, including a group of dedicated seniors inspired by their own life history. residents at creekview health center in pleasanton have banded together with hopes they can send more than 100 first- aid kits to those in need. they hope to get all of those kits shipped out as soon as

next week. >> a lot of our residents, they wanted to make this a big effort and show that they really care. >> it's a noble thing. >> this event comes one day after the city of sonoma hosted and honored ukraine council general dmitro kujerok. earlier we introduced you to colton harris, who lives here in the bay area. his fiancee lives in southern ukraine, and their long- distance romance survived the pandemic. but as kpix's julia kovich reports, the couple face a bigger obstacle, war. >> kind of stressful and scary. >> reporter: that was colton harris two weeks ago. his fiancee, margarita, was living with her mother in the ukrainian town of zakarosh. just days before he was set to visit her, the airspace was shut down, and the invasion happened. that didn't stop his efforts to

the arraignment for a man accused of killing a security guard has been pushed back a month. twenty-five-year-old shadiah mitchell will be back in court to hear the murder charge against him and enter a plea. oakland police say he fatally shot kevin ashida in november. leron gilbert is also charged, but gilbert is on the run.

today nashida's widow spoke to the media about the case. >> i'm hoping today there will be clarity and understanding of this senseless act and other acts of violence. so today, may god be with us. >> investigators say they connected the three suspects to the killing using surveillance video, forensic evidence, and witness statements. three people have died in san francisco in the past few weeks after taking cocaine. they did not realize it had been laced with fentanyl. today as kpix 5's andre wilbur shows us, one is about to test and see if they are about to ingest something potentially deadly. >> reporter: bay area nonprofit fen check spends about a dollar apiece on these fentanyl test strips, and distributes them at bars, art galleries, and tattoo parlors in the hopes of slowing the overdose crisis, even a

little. inside these bathrooms are jars of fentanyl test strips. >> we think that now in -- of course, heroin. it's not a heroin problem anymore. it's xanax. pills are very easy to manufacture. unless you're getting it from a pharmacy, you really should test every single time. >> cofounder of nonprofit fen check, alison heller learn about test strips while working at production in the tenderloin. >> people are still going to do drugs. the reality is a hundred percent of people who die don't make it to rehab. we just want to make sure people survive the night. >> reporter: she wanted to make sure testing was available in places that people might be using or thinking about using. >> what really moved us to do this is we had a close associate who lost their life

to overdose. >> reporter: the strips take five minutes, fifteen seconds to get a result. whether or not a drug like cocaine or molly has traces of fentanyl. the chief technology officer of the alameda health system demonstrates how it works. >> we're going to pretend this might be a little bag of cocaine, and we are going to put a very small amount into the solution. >> reporter: then, just like a covid at-home test strip, you dip the strip into the solution, and wait. >> if that line is there, two lines, two thumbs up, there is no fentanyl in that solution. >> reporter: fen check calls the 40 bars it works with in the bay area every other day to see if they need more strips. >> they come by and restock typically twice a week at this point, because we see a lot of people picking up -- picking up our strips. >> reporter: fen check is providing bars with narcan, and training staff how to use it just in case.

in oakland, andrea forbach, kpix 5. san francisco's health department reports 500 deadly fentanyl overdoses last year. starting monday, students in oakland unified won't need to wear a mask at school, at least not outside. that applies to students, staff, and visitors. the indoor mask mandate stays in place for now. the threat of a teachers strike over pay raise is looming at a different east pay school district. educators at mount diablo unified walked the picket lines, claiming they hasn't received a pay increase in five years. the teachers union demanding a 12.5% raise over three years. the district is offering 7%, plus one smaller bonus, but teachers say the battle is about investing in students and their education, and that means getting a fair salary. >> we believe that the district is not being transparent. right now, they are in the fact- finding phase of things, and so we do believe there is enough money to pay the teachers.

>> the panel plans to review proposals from both sides to find a compromise by march 28th. and that strike deadline. we requested a comment from district leaders, but we have not heard back. another night of march madness. sports anchor glenn beck is here with the near upset. >> yeah. and the local school with an impressive tournament upper. >> no up sets inside of maples pavilion. ncaa women's tournament opened for business today, and stanford, the west region top seed played like the national champs. what a night for the cardinals. hosting 16th seed montana state. lexi hall, batted it away. they shut out montana state 20- 0 after a quarter. second quarter, here are the highlights right here. blocked at one end, and at the other, slammed it home.

they lost their minds. the junior had 12 points, 13 rebounds, and the cardinal won 78-37. meantime, just hours after coaching usf in their first tournament game in 24 years, dons head coach todd golden left the program to take the florida gators job. he got his six-year contract, worth $18 million. the west coast conference to southeastern conference. usf won 24 games this season, the most since 1982, and the dons already have golden's replacement. they promoted assistant chris gurlifson to head coach. the 45-year-old just finished his first season on the usf staff. this will be his first head coaching job. now, why was brad underwood scowling? well, his four seeded illinois team trailed chattanooga at the half. chat that bay and dark not going anywhere.

three words, what a day. >> i think my bracket's busted big time. all right. speaking of busted, new video shows the moments a southern californian man almost got carjacked by a group of bears. it happened in sierra madre. the driver was sitting in his pickup, eating his lunch, when a group of bears wandered on by, wondering why they weren't invited to the picnic. one bear began opening his driver's side door. all the bears quickly ran away when the man says his dog started barking at them. >> oh. >> look at that bunch of rascals. >> yogi and booboo. d it'sred a >> bears are incredibly smart. >> without opposable thumbs. >> just pop it open. >> so don't leave twinkleies in the glove box. >> that's a little trio there. watch out for them.

>> they're going to figure it out eventually, how to get inside. >> they'll start driving, too. >> that will be next. let's take a look at what's happening weather-wise. we get some rain. saturday's storm system is getting closer. it has moisture along the coast of washington and oregon. we are going to see the moisture approaching the coast of california as we head into the wee hours of saturday morning. let's check out futurecast. we're going to get through the next several hours still dry. a couple of sprinkles on the simulation by 3:00 in the morning. light shower activity rolling through. then the heavier rain will be moving in around it just after vise. this will be light to moderate rain for the most part, but there are going to be a few pockets of heavier downpours. not anything that's going to last long enough or be heavy enough to floodiof ra out of this system. can't rule out the possibility of a couple rumbles of thunder. don't be startled by that. more rain through the afternoon. just generally a wet day. you see the breaks with the showers. so it's not going to rain ever

where all the time, but it is just going to continue to be wet, all the way until we get to the early evening hours. the last of the showers should be moving out as we get to around sunset tomorrow evening. we'll see decreasing clouds through the rest of saturday night. the rest of the weekend, go ahead with any outdoor plans. sunday is the better day to check things off on the honey- do list. this is not a huge rainmaker for us. a 10th of an inch to quarter inch of rain definitely helps. there will be some spots that overachieve and get up close to half and inch of rain. we will take ever single drop. this is going to be a snowmaker, winter weather advisory. two to three inches of snow above 5,000 feet. difficult travel conditions on u.s. 50 and i-80. looking outside right now, a little bit of fog. it is just staying along the coast. temperatures are mostly in the low to mid-50s. down to 49 degrees in santa rosa, and all of us will join a
