sake how the search for a vandalism suspects led to a bomb scare the put a neighborhood on lockdown. as they were in ukraine which is on, the crisis is growing. a sign that we may be nearing the end of the pandemic. good morning, it is saturday, march 19. let's start with a quick check of our weather with derek. even though it is not raining where you live, it is about to. showers are sitting off of the coast. it looks pretty good. the way the last several storms have look, they have followed the pattern. we will not get heavy rain, but we will get rain that will slick in the roads for the morning.

if you are going to be on the road saturday morning, plan on the roads getting wet enough you might have some slowdowns. by 7:30, light showers. these will be spotty. it will not be widespread rain for everyone at the same time. it will be scattered showers that come in on and off. right to the heart of the early afternoon, there is one of them. from noon to 3:00. and then just after sunset, it will be done. we have a big warm-up coming our way and we will talk about that in a few minutes. a bomb square. neighbors were forced to evacuate for several hours.

police say the initially arrested a man for vandalism and then discovered he had explosives on him. evacuation orders were lifted at 8:30 last night. this next story should be a warning to young people. a kid in the south bay has been arrested in connection with a new social media challenge. people have been hit by projectile's from a vehicle. it turns out they were hit by water balls called splat. earlier this week police say they had gotten multiple reports of people getting it with gel water bottles. they are told to target random people with those projectiles. a man accused of killing a security guard, his trial has been moved to april 15. he could potentially enter a

plea. you can police say he shot and killed a man during an attempted robbery. a 24-year-old and a 27-year- old were charged. he was a former police officer and after retiring, he worked as a private security guard. >> i am hoping today that there will be clarity and understanding of this senseless act and other acts of violence. today, may god be with us. >> investigators say they connected the three suspects using surveillance video. and now to the war in ukraine. since the russian

invasion began, more than 3 million people have fled ukraine . the vast majority have crossed into poland. a sign that the train station says the ukrainian and polish here are safe. people must start making sense of the confusing and overwhelming situation. >> about 20,000 refugees are moving through the train station on a daily basis. some will take buses to warsaw. here in north america, asylum-seekers may be getting preferential treatment over russians. about 30 russians found rainians/their passports and

were admitted. >> these are russian dissidents who are also have opinions and are in a position and facing persecution and torture. the u.s. is seeing an increase in russian asylum- seekers. more ukrainians are more likely to show up at the border. citizens continue to win door brutal situations. kpix5 shows us how people in the north bay are pitching in. >> she works in novato and she put a word out for help and has been overwhelmed by the community's response. >> i am trying to do what i can hear.

>> reporter: she is a scientists at the block institute of aging. she is thousands of miles away from home but she knew she had to do something to help. >> we have a lot of wounded. doctors are really stretched out. they really need help. >> reporter: she came up with the idea to collect medical supplies and donations. the same generosity can be found here in downtown novato. >> reporter: she is selling hundreds of cases of chardonnay with profits going to help refugees crossing the border into poland. >> you see the reports and your heart goes out to everyone. their lives are lost and we want to help any way that we can. >> reporter: all of the money

say the state will lift restrictions on large indoor events. events with more than 1000 people must check for proof of vaccination or a negative test. starting next week, students in the oakland unified school district will no longer need to wear a mask outside. it is dropping the outdoor mask mandate. that applies to students, staff, and visitors. the indoor mask mandate will stay in place at this time. the threat of the teachers strike over pay raises is looming. educators at mount diablo unified what picket lines saying they haven't received a pay increase in five years. they are demanding of five point race and offering 7% +1 smaller bonus. teachers say the battle is about investing in students and their education,

and that means appears celebrate . >> we believe that district is not being transparent. we do believe that there is enough money to pay the teachers. >> a panel plans to review proposals to find a compromise. we requested a comment from district leaders, but we have not heard back. sake teachers in san francisco are reaching an agreement to get their full paychecks. they have been demanding a fix to a glitch piling up hundreds of paychecks for months. the district agreed to pay them in full by yesterday and cover any penalties or late fees. a weeklong teachers strike has ended in the north they with the school district agreed to give educators a raise.

welcome back. tesla is facing a new racial discrimination lawsuit. a former contractor is suing the car maker framing that white coworkers tormented and harassed him. >> reporter: we have covered a fair number of these racial discrimination lawsuits against tesla. this is how they treated a black coworker injured while working in afghanistan. >> reporter: before he was control manager, he worked as a defense contractor in an active combat zone and afghanistan. two explosions left him injured. this is the alarm you hear during a rocket attack. one day

a coworker's phone went off with the ring turnaround and it triggered his ptsd. >> he went to the employee discreetly and calmly and politely asked the coworker if he could please changes ring tone and he explained why. instead of doing the civil and appropriate thing that coworker no longer increase the volume on his phone but told other coworkers about it so they could change their ring tones too to essentially harass him. >> reporter: is super intended sarcastically told him to get over it because he needed to face his fears. he saw swastikas and prominent displays of the n-word at the fremont plant. in one instance, he was called a boy. his manager wrote this is $160 for barbecue >> people were mocking his ptsd

peck. >> it will be .02 inches of rain today. it will be enough that the roads get slick today. anything you've got plans outdoors for saturday, you should factor in some rain. we are checking in on our first alert doppler and we have a good the end of rain sitting off the coast. it looks pretty impressive on here. we will get some heavier rain. that is more impressive than it will actually be when it gets here. that is the way the last several systems have looked this year. it is not raining now. it is cloudy and relatively warm with temperatures in the low to mid 50s. if we go back to future cast, there is that rain off the coast. what we notice here are light and spotty showers throughout the morning.

this frame is a good example of how saturday morning will go. it is not raining everywhere at the same time, and it is not raining heavily. it will go that way through the remainder of today. by the afternoon, we might see a more widespread nature to the showers. there is one other item to talk about for the afternoon. once we get to that 1:00 to 3:00 timeframe, you see beads of yellow. we could get an isolated thunderstorms. this is the kind of system that could develop, and isolated thunderstorms. it would not last long if you get it. don't be surprised if you hear a rumble of thunder off in the distance today. it comes to an end right about the time we get to the sunset. by 9:00they will be donerawill 2

inches of rain. sunday will be nicer and we will warm up the temperatures from here. daytime highs will climb into the mid-to upper 50s today in general. i will show you a good example of what most daytime highs will be like today as we hold onto those numbers in the upper 50s. once we get past this weekend, there is a noticeable warm up coming. temperatures will be above average by the time we get toward the end of your seven day forecast. here is today. the colors on the map show you where the temperatures are above or below average. for sunday, we warm up to average. by monday we start warming up and then by tuesday, yellow and

orange will show you many places where we get up to 20 degrees above normal. the average right now would be right around 68 and you can see the line going across their. we are only in the upper 50s today. ange l take us into tuesday and wednesday. by the time we get into that timeframe, low to mid highs in the mid 80s. tomorrow we climb into the mid- 60s. it will be warmer tomorrow and then for san francisco, we will be in the low 80s by tuesday and wednesday. if we look at the microclimates, a noticeable warm up for sunday already. upper 50s today but we will go mid-to upper 60s tomorrow. look here by tuesday and

live from the cbs bay studios, this is kpix5 news. the time now is 6:32. thank you so much for joining us. let's get a quick check of our weather. it looks pretty good on first alert doppler. the rain is sitting right off of the coast and is just about ready to come onshore. we will bring it into the last frame. there is well organized rain here and it will move into the north bay. we will take that forward and watch the showers worked their way across the heart of the bay through the late morning. these will not be heavy downpours.

most of this will be light on again off again showers with the occasional heavy shower embedded in this. it will be manageable and light. it will be more widespread by the afternoon at three 1:00 and 3:00. and you can see have a clears out in time for the evening. tomorrow will be a much nicer day and we will be warmer with blue skies. first saturday, you've got to factor rain into your plans. i will be back with more and we will track this day in more detail and i will show you the warm up for next week. back over to you. a new twist in the case of two northern california men convicted of killing an italian police officer when they were on vacation and 2019. they have reduce the prison terms instead of life behind bars, they will serve 24 years and his friend

the la unified school district is lifting their masking mandate. while lifting the mask mandate is a huge relief for some, it is a concern for others. >> reporter: by midweek next week, students and staff will no longer be under a mask mandate at la unified schools. >> i feel like it is about time that they lifted it. >> reporter: she is apparent and lausteacher. they are leaving the mask option up to their nine-year- old son. >> i don't wear a mask but if my son wants to go out, he will wear a mask. >> reporter: they after others optional in the classrooms. >> i think it will make a lot of people relaxed and reduce the conflict in our community.

state water officials have announced new drought restrictions. they are cutting the amount of water given to cities and farmers from reservoirs. >> water is a precious resource and we will be asked to keep an eye on the use. >> reporter: mega drought. experts like alan haynes a hydrologist in charge explained what is missing. >> we have had so many dry years that the reservoirs are down. there hasn't been enough precipitation in the winter. >> reporter: sh a bill is 68% of average. >> to have that much water not in the reservoir is problematic.

>> reporter: the department of water resources will preserve as much of lake oroville's storage as possible. it is the largest reserv we al water is a limited resource and it has been under a lot of stress. we are read very low levels that we are likely to see further restrictions. that will continue. let's take a look at the first alert weather forecast. after that story it is nice to see that there is rain on first alert doppler. it will not be sick if it can't rain, but enough to have an impact on saturday. let's get into the details. we will take a look at the wide view with plenty of rain showing up. . off the coast, a close-up look . this is the most recent frame . pretty well organized rain right off the coast.

we will come in for a closer view. a good idea on how this looks by the time it comes onshore. it will be light rain and fairly spread apart. it will not be widespread steady rain. light showers to the majority of today. this is 8:30. it starts to look better widespread by the time we get into saturday. here we are from 1:00 intel 3:00 today. most of us will have a better chance of getting some of this rain on our part of the bay depending on where you are. the possibility for an isolated thunderstorms mixed in here. we have seen some lightning well off the coast. there would not be a whole lot here this afternoon, but don't be surprised if you hear a rumble of thunder. and by 5:00 at 6:00 it is

pretty much winding down. the rain turned soft and then the clouds go away. tomorrow will be much sunnier and warmer. sunday will be a much better day . for saturday, the rainfall totals come in at .02 inches of rain. that is not a whole lot of rain to add up. that is a live look outside right now. 50s for most locations. 45, santa rosa. 50, liver move and 52 everywhere else. we are staying in the 50s and we warm up to the mid and upper 50s bay area wide. those numbers on sunday are 10 to 12 degrees warmer and then they get a lot warmer after that. next week's warm up, the red bull's-eye over rice.

it is showing us a high degree of confidence that temperatures will be above average. if you look at today and shade the map for where the temperatures are in terms of a buffer below average, deeper into the shades of blue, we will be in the mid to upper 50s today. watch how this changes. it is a good way to get a visual. tomorrow, right on the mark for average. temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s. on monday we climb above average. we are getting into the yellow and orange. here is tuesday. tuesday, everyone climbs well above average. take a look at the forecast for the inland valleys were 68 would be average and today it's only 58. by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday, well into the mid-80s.

sake for many of us it can be hard to find the motivation to run regularly. one liver burr man set out on a mission to run every street in his city. he laced up his shoes as he inches closer to completing his goal. >> reporter: i've got my stretches in and i think i'm ready to catch up with him. what is the goal that you said out? >> my goal is to run every single streak, every cul-de-sac and turn around and see every inch of this city. >> what motivated you? >> i love this city and i love everything about it.

3.14 miles. it draws out 3.14 and the pie symbol. >> he retired from apple in january which gave him more time to run. >> i was not a runner. i started smoking cigarettes at 13 years old and then give them up when i was 39, just before my 40th birthday. i ran a mile the next day. it hurt. i was coughing and i sure didn't want a cigarette after that. i just started running. >> reporter: those legs haven't stopped yet. i'm out of juice, but mike is almost done running. he has 25 to 35 miles left. by the end of march, he will be done.
