demands that people in the port city of mariupol surrender. nearly 4,000 people were evacuated from the city yesterday. we're hearing about 400 people may be trapped under rubble after russia dropped a bomb on a school that was acting as a shelter. meanwhile, in the capital of kyiv, this dramatic video shows an explosion that officials say hit a shopping center and homes. this is the aftermath of that devastating attack. at least four people died in shelling yesterday in kyiv. elise preston is in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the united nations says more than three million people have escaped the violence in ukraine. ten million people have been displaced around the country. ukrainian officials refuse to surrender in mariupol this morning. resigns have faced some of the harshest attacks by salon forces. >> what happens in mariupol is

epitome of war crime. instead of opening humanitarian corridors as we agreed and letting people out and letting supplies in, russians are just trying to take the city down. >> reporter: defense secretary lloyd austin says the invasion has stalled and believes vladimir putin will escalate attacks to build momentum. >> we've seen him attack towns and cities and civilians outright, we expect that to continue. >> reporter: this video shows a large blast in the suburbs of kyiv. firefighters pulling someone from the rubble. >> there is just 1% chance for us to stop this war. >> reporter: speaking to cnn, ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy says he's willing to negotiate but rejected a proposal to recognize separatist regions. >> you cannot force people to love the enemy. that's impossible. >> reporter: zelenskyy released this video showing the destruction of his country. >> this was my home -- >> reporter: but vowed to rebuild. >> it will become great. >> reporter: ukrainian president

volodymyr zelenskyy says he is ready and willing to speak with russian president putin about ending the conflict, but he warned if those talks fail he believes it would mean world war iii is upon us. >> wow. elise preston in new york. thank you very much. so breaking overnight, the white house says president biden will visit poland this week for talks about the war in ukraine. part of a very important week for the president which includes a visit with nato allies and hearings for his supreme court nominee. scott macfarlane has more. >> reporter: president biden's arrival at the white house from a weekend trip to delaware is just the beginning of a busy week of travel as the president heads to belgium mid week to talk about nato's military support and humanitarian efforts to help ukraine. the white house press secretary says there are no plans for the president to visit ukraine itself. the trip comes as the number of refugees has eclipsed three million, and amid growing concern that some nato countries could be drawn into the fight.

>> american troops will not be on the ground in ukraine at this moment. the president has been clear on that. >> reporter: before the president departs, his nominee for the supreme court, d.c. federal appellate judge ketanji brown jackson, begins her confirmation hearing monday before the senate judiciary committee. the larger question -- will republicans vote with democrats to confirm judge jackson, who is rated well qualified by the american bar association. republican leader mitch mcconnell told "face the nation" he's not yet decided how he'll vote. >> i haven't made a final decision as to how i'm going to vote. i'm willing to listen to the testimony. that's why we have hearings. >> that was scott macfarlane reporting. and speaking of the supreme court, we are following breaking news overnight as we're learning that justice clarence thomas is recovering in the hospital. the court said the 73-year-old was hospitalized in d.c. on friday after experiencing flu-like symptoms. thomas is being treated for an infection. he's expected to be released in the coming days, though. thomas is the longest serving justice among the current

justices, and he is expected to participate in cases this week. more covid cases could be on the horizon here in the u.s., but it's not likely that we will see a major wave like in months past. lilia luciano has more on what to expect. >> reporter: states are turning the page on covid from pandemic to endemic. the masks are off, and many testing sites are shutting down. most requirements are rolled back except masking in airports and on public transportation >> i'm glad to see we're opening >>orter: new covid infections in the u.s. are at the lowest level since last july. nearly 99.5% of americans are living in a low or medium-risk area. >> i think we're going to continue to see low levels of infection through the summer. before we get there, we're probably going to see some tick-up like of the europeans are seeing.

>> reporter: ba.2 is driving the surges in europe. but health experts say vaccines are effective against the new strain. 82% of eligible americans have received at least one dose. in china, health officials say low vaccination rates among the elderly are behind the latest surge. the country just reported its first covid deaths in more than a year. the u.s. surgeon general says americans should not panic about the outbreaks abroad, and many are confident as they return to newly opened workplaces. >> for most part i feel safe. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci says he expects cases of that omicron subvariant to rise in the states but that it will be more of an uptick rather than a full-blown surge. lilia luciano, cbs news, pasadena. a suspect is being questioned in connection with a horrific shooting at an arkansas car show. police say two people got into a gunfight at the event saturday. one person was killed and 27 wounded including two kids under the age of 2.

event organizer said that their prayers are with the victims. >> we've been doing this for 16 years and never had a problem. everybody been loving it. sometimes it takes one bad apple. but we ain't going to let it ruin us. >> the event raises money for school supplies and scholarships. and the marine corps is identifying the four u.s. marines killed during a training exercise in norway. it happened friday night when their osprey crashed during a nato exercise not related to the war in ukraine. no word yet on what caused the crash. the marines have since released these pictures of the four young marines who were killed. their bodies are in the process of being transferred back to the u.s. and a california law enforcement chopper was en route to a rescue when it needed a rescue itself after it crashed. you can see the helicopter. it belongs to the los angeles county sheriff's department. sitting dangerously close to a drop-off several hundred feet

porky pair, but hammy and mary fiercely defended themselves. they charged at the intruder, and the bear made a hasty retreat. the pigs saved their open bacon. wildfires flared up in texas, and there's new information in the shooting of david ortiz nearly three years ago. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the boston globe" reports a drug kingpin intentionally put a hit out on former boston red sox slugger david ortiz in 2019 according to the findings of a private investigator ortiz hired to look into who shot him. the suspected kingpin apparently felt disrespected by ortiz. he's been held on unrelated charges but was extradited to the u.s. in december. 13 people have been charged so far in the shooting. ktvt reports more evacuations have been ordered as wildfires threaten homes and burn up thousands of acres in northern texas.

a large fire burned near fort worth is now at least 5% contained as it swallowed up more than 6,000 acres. crews made some progress, attacking the flames by air on sunday as choppers dropped water on the fires. dry conditions have provided another challenge for crews with limited availability to tap into water on the ground. and the "houston chronicle" says a suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting four people in downtown austin as the city hosts the south by southwest festival. the shooting took place early sunday in an area with several bars near where some festival events are held. police say a preliminary investigation finds that it started as a disturbance between two groups of people and was not a random act. the shooting victim suffered minor injuries. still to come, super rare comic sale. why a marvel comic book fetched millions of dollars in an online auction.

stoctuen aer theee maj ditchetheir best week today nike will report earnings after the close. on friday, the dow rallied more than 274 points, the nasdaq jump ed 279, and the s&p 500 rose 51. striking workers could send the highest gas prices even higher. more than 500 steel workers at chevron's richmond, california, refinery said they plan to walk off the job after midnight after contract negotiations between the union and the company broke down. if the refinery is forced to temporarily shut down, california's gas prices could spike beyond the $5.84 per gallon consumers are already spending at the pump. the maker of jergens is asking everyone who uses its ultra healing moisturizer to check their bottles. the company is recalling three and ten-ounce bottles of the

well, the u.s. teamed up with colombian law enforcement over the weekend to take down a cocaine operation that was moving the drugs using a speedboat. it happened about 120 miles off the coast of colombia and netted roughly 3.5 tons, that's worth about $120 million. officials say the bust is a stark reminder colombia remains one of the world's top producers of cocaine. well, the joy of a street carnival turned into a tragedy in a small town in southern belgium. a car plowed through a crowd of about 100 people yesterday. six were killed. more than two dozen were injured. ten had life-threatening injuries. the driver and another person were taken into police custody and arrested. no word on a motive, though. and the sweet 16 is set for the ncaa tournament, and the legendary career of duke's coach k. continues. duke trailed michigan state by

our top stories this morning -- ukraine defiantly turned down russian demands that people in the critical port city of mariupol surrender. about 4,000 people were evacuated from the besieged city yesterday. it comes as russia is said to have bombed a shoal in that city acting as a shelter for some 400 people. and supreme court justice clarence thomas is recovering in the hospital where he's being treated for an infection. the court says the 73-year-old thomas was admitted friday evening for what was described as flu-like symptoms. he is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days. the academy awards are next week, and while you think of actors or directors, an oscar is also a coveted prize for the
